Excellent point. What about sentimental value? What if that was a brick from the rural farmhouse someone was born in which no longer exists? Methinks the DEA went waaaaay over the line there.

Plus, in order to make a brick, it has to be baked in a kiln at >1,000C. This would surely change any drugs hidden in a pocket inside the brick, on a molecular level. If not, then surely you'd end up with one big solidified chunk of drug on the inside?

I mean, isn't it enough to chip off a small amount of the exterior of the brick and analyze it (GC/MS, maybe?) to make sure it's really a normal brick?

I find it hard to believe that a passive receiver can cause more problems than an active 802.11b transmitter.

You probably aren't an RF engineer (neither am I), but I figured I'd clean this up. In order to receive a signal, you must transmit it. To be precise, if you've got a radio station transmitting at 107.9MHz, your radio must generate a 107.9MHz signal inside it, align that with the phase of the incoming signal, and subtract one from the other. It's left with the raw modulation, which is what you want to end up with.

Therefore, leaky electronics can and will spew RF even (especially!) if it's only a receiver.

I never have figured out what American's refer to as Component Video (is it RGB, or S-Video?), but according to this the Dreamcast has RGB, S-Video and Composite outs, which covers both of those.

Argh. RGB is not the same. Over there, I think the SCART cable has RGB pins on it which the TV can use. SCART totally doesn't exist in North America or Japan. On higher-end TVs, there are the normal composite (single RCA connector) input, S-video (single mini-DIN connector) input, and component (three RCA connectors) input which supply Y (luminance), Cb (Blue chrominance), and Cr (Red chrominance) signals completely separate for better colour purity and reproduction.

I'm not familiar with the PS2, but the quality of output from my DC on RF is pretty impressive - not got a scart cable yet. I have a normal 25" TV, and a cheap DVD player, which obviously makes my opinion worthless, but there you go.

Eww, RF. Just wait until you pick up the SCART cable. You think it looks good now? You're in for a VERY pleasant surprise...

The Sega Dreamcast does output component (RGB) video signals that can drive an SVGA monitor at up to 800x600.

You can't connect that to a TV. (Maybe you can in Europe over a SCART connection, but I don't have experience with that because I'm on the other side of the drink.)

By the way, the PS2's component outputs are switchable between Y-Cb/Pb-Cr/Pr and R-G-B in the unit's configuration menu.

The picture quality of my Dreamcast is somewhat sharper on my 21" trinitron than it is on my WEGA. I'm fairly certain that the XBR model you have has about a .7mm to .9mm dot pitch, is significantly worse than a PC monitor (.2mm to .3mm). Sorry to break the bad news.

Uhh, Trinitron monitors don't have any dot pitch, period. They have stripe pitch, which is the spacing of two vertical stripes of the aperture grille.

You're absolutely right -- monitors have a MUCH finer dot pitch than a TV, because you're usually 24 to 36 inches away from the monitor. I (and I'll go out on a limb here: Most people) don't usually sit any closer to their TVs than about 5-7 feet or so, therefore the stripe/dot pitch is pretty much irrelevant.

Yes it has component out. Mine is hooked up to the tv using S-video connectors, and in work my monitor

Component video out isn't S-video. S-video has the chrominance and luminance separated, but the chrominance for all three colours is still on one wire. Component video connections have three completely separate video wires: Y, Cb/Pb, and Cr/Pr.

If your PS2 looks as good playing DVDs as your *ahem* Sony "reference-grade" model then either your Sony is a stinking pile of crap, or your DVDs have been burned from their VHS equivalents.

I didn't say it was as good -- I said it was nearly as good. I can still tell the difference, but for C$449, it's a really decent DVD player.

If you can't see the difference in quality then you sir are a fool for buying high-end equipment when your eyesight/perception is too low to use it.

Sony makes pretty decent stuff -- that's why they're the number one (IIRC) manufacturer of broadcast-quality equipment. You'd be hard-pressed to find a newsroom or TV station that doesn't have a LOT of Sony equipment in it.

Not that I would ever class sony kit as high-end".

If I wanted obscenely high-end stuff, I'd get Loewe, B&O, or NAD. Unfortunately, my budget doesn't permit it, so I've gone with a pretty-damed-good TV because I'm picky about video quality -- and the PS2 meets my expectations nicely. That's the point I was trying to make.

You're full of shit. I live in Toronto, and occasionally I've forgotten to put a stamp on an envelope. I get it back in my mailbox a day or so later with a big "Return To Sender" sticker on it with a transparent backing material. There's text on the label saying to put more/proper postage on the letter, peel the big sticker off (leaving the clear backing layer on the envelope), and remail it.

However, if you put YOUR address in the main "to" area, and THEIR address in the "from" area, put no postage on it, and drop it in a mailbox, it MIGHT get there, complete with the "Return To Sender" sticker, if the post office doesn't catch on. They sometimes assume that it mistakenly got that far in the system without a stamp, and promptly send it "back".
