This is what the FCC has done with Radio and TV for years. They provide access to the public to services and require the providers to give it for free. What do your have to pay? Time. You wil have to go through advertising pop-ups. But, if you need internet while out of the home or away from coffee, you can still get it. Free is not difficult to provide. You've seen computers over the years given away for free with a required internet connection and ads stuffed in your face constantly. We shouldn't be looking at this concept as a replacement to your internet connection. It simply is intended to expand the availability of the average person and perhaps give internet to those that may not need it all the time.
If it was the government responsibility to provide internet and free internet was a right of yours, then I would agree. I see this form of internet not replacing my home connection but rather providing a tool while out and about. When I'm out shopping, it would be nice to access my PDA and see what the competition's prices are online. When I'm on the road and need an address or phone number, it would be great to not have to pay cellular companies huge amount of money for a simple web access. If the only thing they are blocking is porn, fine! Do porn on your access that you pay for. I could get my email without a cell phone or Blackberry. I could even Skype call from my PDA? When I get home and have huge files to download, use the cable or DSL.
This was the entire outside of the toaster, not the inside. Yeesh. I've used a toaster my whole life in the US, and yes, be careful of touching the top. Duh. The sides of this toaster were absolutely TOO HOT to be safe in a kitchen. It would set a bag of bread on fire sitting next to it. Find one like that being sold todat in the US. That is my point.
All that I recall about the toaster was that it was all white, had nice round corners, and looked quite attractive. On the outside, thy had me sold. Sounds more like a Mac, actually, but this ran a little hotter.
You're funny, Flamebait! Looks bad from the outside looking in. You see and hear only the stories that are most "newsworthy" and what the media finds interesting. The thousand of correct lawsuits keep doctors from practicing sloppy medicine on my infant. They keep stores from selling crap that will choke a child. They bring justic to lazy landlords that treat poor tenants like animals. They make sure we don't buy things that were known to contain melamine and are sold anyway.
I hope you meant toaster and toast. I was refering to the sides of the toaster that can burn. We move back to the States and just bought the cheapest toaster at Walmart. Won't burn you if you touch the sides of the TOASTER.
I don't disagree with your desire or feelings about small town. The challenge looking down the road, however, is that the small town will grow large...and then the government is still running everything. Can give the government more "leverage" on the average person than I would like. I could image...you're late on your internet bill, slap a lien on your home ith no problem or deny you any other service they provide...and they are providing them all. I know this heads down a very negative path, but look around the world to other countries that already do this. Do you want to live in China?
Now I think we're heading down a whole new road. This expands the question as to how much you want the government doing for us. Do you want them to provide internet, and then phone, and then cable, and then power, and then the newspaper, and then what? Just because they used tax dollars to put in an infrastructure? Shouldn't we then get he service for free or next to free (just cost of maintenance? That would make them too competitive over the free market which would have to go out-of-pocket to build infrastructure. I guess I'm of the other political view that says government should only govern and not provide everything for a community.

Agreed. Those of us in America should live outside America for a while. I got back from living in South Africa for over a year. I wish they had more lawsuits! You heard me right. It because of lawsuit and the threat oif lawsuits that companies take us into consideration and have to build things safer. Ever bought a toaster outside of the US. You'll burn you hand the first time you use it. Not in America. The only toasters you find will be more carefully designed and labeled. Why because of the threat of lawsuits.
We still get cheap products. The unsafe products are shipped from China to other parts of the world. Hate the laywer. Like the eventual product.
This, of course, assumes that the government can do a better job with its limited knowledge, expertise, and equipment. I find it hard to imagine that running fiber around is cheaper, but it must mean that their city buildings are right next door to each other or on the same block. There are few things that I have experienced the government doing better than a competitive private sector.
They aren't wasting their time if they are getting closer to having a fast reaction from the receptors. Yes, it is primarily line of sight (unless strong enough to light up a room), but could get to fiber optic speeds. It's really the same thing but without the fiber. They will just have to think about different wave lengths to separate signals and allow multiple channels.
I love the comment that this kind of display is not suited for a 3D image. In other words, all this will do is allow you to see a flat image from any side of it. Uh, make a box with 4 monitors and call it quits. Save a few million in development costs.
Maine not upgrading to Vista. Well, there goes 5 licenses down the drain. Call me when California or New York make this decision. Going back to sleep...
Now that we've satisfied the curiousity of a few scientists who had a burning question of why that happened, perhaps we can spend the next trillion dollars figuring out fire. I've always wondered why it flickers like that. Gotta be worth spending at least a few billion on.
OK. Read what is really going on. The therapist is helping the soldier relive his experience. In other words, pull a video game off the shelf, call the desert Iraq and begin playing together. Just keep telling your partner, "It's ok! I got you covered!" Cheap and fun therapy and he gets paid to do this.
So what is better? Something free that everyone has access to or something that only the rich and privileged can attain?
I would think that most \.ers would be cheering this since its akin to open source.
I rather feel artificially full after eating Chinese food with MSG than be left mentally empty after playing MGS. Who sits around watching every muscle in the players. Does that make a game more realistic? Spend more time on making a fully animated environment. I want to see flies bugging me once in a while. How about a bird that can be blown to bits (feathers showering down) because it's sitting on a fence and I can do it without PETA coming after me? Put in the occassional bee stinging one of the fellow players on the butt for entertainment value. That will make it more real that an eye twitch.
Like a lot of laws that are drawn up to "stop the bad guys", this will do nothing to stop them and cause internet cops to run around looking for open wifi and causing the innocent newbies to do more work and call technical support more often.
Let's be real. The bad guys will get on any way they like and using false names if they must. The good guys will be forced to do more and stop offering for free what they want. Isn't this in line with the "open wifi for everyone"? What happened to that vision?
If you haven't heard yet, Dreamworks and Pixar are both heading to 3D only movies. In another year, neither studio will be producing movies that don't require 3D. If this technology catches on and becomes popular (driven by movies), we might be able to avoid traditional, annoying 3D glasses.
I would only hope that the studios could release DVD with either encoding. If not, you'll still be stuck at home watching 3D movies the old way.

If we could just find Atlantis, this might all have a chance!!

Show clips from the MATRIX and explain how you are like one of those Smith guys. Your job is to kill everyone that causes problems in the programs.
If you're running a 32bit system, you will max out with memory allocation at around 3.2G, you need the 64bit version to see 4G, don't you?
I saw the election in question. It was 3 to 1 with the Democrats over the Republicans wearing wool sweaters into the election booths.
