    Some things are adult by nature simply because of unavoidable social convention. Those really should be locked away using some mechanism that is expected to pose some sort of minimal barrier.

    It doesn't have to be unhackable. It just has to create a clear boundary.

    It doesn't matter if it's a "parents" fileshare or a lock on a gun cabinet.

    It was a C64.

    Just to run a game you had to do far more "tinkering" then a modern kid may ever do. It just came with the territory becuase the user interfaces were embryonic.

    You had to understand the machine just to use it.

    I grew up in farm country. I know what Roundup is. Anything that is engineered to be "Roundup Ready" is something I would rather avoid. I want LESS chemicals in my food rather than MORE.

    Perhaps we should leave genetic meddling to agronomists. As things are now, most of the genetic meddling is being done by POISON SALESMEN to help the sales of POISON.

    Public policy is a little more complex than some lab results.

    The whole "anti-science" smear is just a red herring as well as being bad form just for being an insult.

    You can't separate the two so yeah. If you're supporting GMO's then you are supporting a framework that allows for the corporate monopolies in farming.

    Patents are part of the landscape. You can't just pretend they're not there.

    People are earning less and working more. Meanwhile access to basic physical needs like health care are on the decline. We are headed for a next Guilded Age and many people seem to be all for it.

    By far the Monsanto Effect is the single biggest problem with GMO crops. That problem has also highlighted the problem of contamination. There is nothing anti-science about being concerned about either of those.

    Both of these are in direct conflict with this guy's proclaimed objectives. "Feeding the world" is likely to come into conflict with any monopolists agenda just as it does for drugs.

    It sounds like this gasbag has just changed his flavor. It's still a mindless gasbag.

    No. You are just ignoring the fact that our Talibani are relatively harmless at present. They don't seem so dangerous because they haven't had much chance to run amok. Given them free reign and it wouldn't be any better than a full on Islamic state.

    Our Zealots seem relatively harmless precisely because we have a relatively secular state at this point.

    You only see their true nature in little bits and pieces like when Tea Bagger senate candidates manage to get too chatty.

    The cost of any activity should be related to that activity.

    Externalities should not be obscured. It distorts the market and encourages counter-productive and anti-social (fraking) behavior.

    You can already do this with low profile machines and have been able to do so for quite a long time already. The idea of extending that to a PC on a stick is not really that far of a stretch really.

    The main problem is that your USB ports will take up more volume that what's taken up by one of these thumb PCs.

    Where do old phones go to die?

    I have old PCs lingering on being useful despite the fact that they are unsuitable for their primary purpose anymore. Why not allow the same thing for phones and tablets?

    An old phone could be a dedicated HTPC or a low profile server. Kind of the opposite of virtualization.

    People usually subscribe to an ISP for other reasons.

    So it's not like your ISP bill is some "dedicated cable bill". It's something you're already paying for. The marginal cost of Internet transport of your video entertainment option is ZERO.

    Find another straw to grasp at.

    Roku CAN do it. You just might have to PAY FOR IT. Not that Netflix is totally free on it's own. It is merely cheap.

    Of course you are going to have few options if you are only willing things that are free and ad supported (Hulu) or have a pittance monthly fee (Netflix).

    Depending on your use case, the PAY FOR IT option might even be a lot less than what you would pay for cable. Ala Carte is already here. It's just done by the show rather than by the channel.

    I used to do something like that to get decent functionality out of the SMS app on the iPhone.

    That nonsense is why I defected to Android.
