No, I want to mod it down because it's not insightful or informative. If you read my post beyond the second sentence you would know that NASA has already looked into what you were talking about and canceled the project. Whether it was for financial reasons or feasibility, I don't know.
Keep in mind the relationship between energy and power. Assuming the reactor on a ship can only produce a fixed amount of power there is a trade off between rate of fire and the kinetic energy of the projectile. If the user of said railgun charges the capacitor bank from a 15 amp wall outlet for five minutes the gun will be capable of firing a small projectile at a reasonably high rate of speed. But if the user charges it up over night it can fire a massive projectile at the same speed.
As far as getting the massive amount of power from the capacitor bank to the railgun itself, I am confident that the military has the capital to use some sort of superconducting material to deliver as much power as they need. I think it's likely more difficult to construct a physical "gun" that can handle the "reaction" from the projectile's "action." I suspect the Navy wants to fire very large projectiles at a very high rate of speed and isn't too concerned about how rapidly they fire them.
After further research I have discovered that HEPA filters in biomedical applications have ultraviolet lights that kill the bacteria and viruses.
Typically, medical-use HEPA filtration systems also incorporate high-energy ultra-violet light units to kill off the live bacteria and viruses trapped by the filter media. Some of the best-rated HEPA units have an efficiency rating of 99.995%, which assures a very high level of protection against airborne disease transmission.
OK, I'm not an expert in biosecurity, but wouldn't the reduced air pressure in the room be accomplished by pumping air out of the room?
I'm thinking the same thing. All I have been able to find are the specs for level 3 containment. It says:
The Class III cabinet is operated under negative pressure. Supply air is HEPA-filtered and the cabinet exhaust air is filtered through two HEPA filters in series, or HEPA filtration followed by incineration, before discharge outside of the facility.
But apparently level 4 is just a large scale level 3. It doesn't put my mind at ease that the filter that keeps the Ebola Virus from escaping the CDC is the same kind that's on my vacuum cleaner.
From what I understand, scientists knew of the tree but had never witnessed it flowering. After all, how could you miss discovering something this big?
On Monday, KTVU reported scientists have received an odd signal from space and some readers may have interpreted this as a confirmed extra-terrestrial contact.
I found the original from the Google Cache. You decide!
I have a hunch that movie studios are jumping on board with Blue Ray because they feel it's more secure. Which makes me ask, "Why haven't there been more stories about Blue Ray being cracked recently?" Anybody?
I remember a documentary that said that a crowd of people is considered to flow like a fluid and the basic rules of fluid mechanics apply. The people in the documentary were designing new soccer stadiums with "diffusers" in them to slow the flow of people so no one will be trampled during a soccer riot. This research appears to take a little more psychological approach. However, it is not something totally new.
Reform the election process.
Second step: order a new election with the new election rules.
Seriously, I don't want the job. Although taking a cue from Brazil I might consider cutting off welfare to families who's children have failing grades and taking a cue from China offer $1000 cash to anybody who willingly surrenders their rights to reproduce.
Sounds like this kid was not adequately challenged by his school. At least that's what the story leads me to believe. If I was the judge I would let him off on the condition that he goes to a school where his curiosity will be encouraged but given enough direction so he doesn't get into more trouble.
Imagine just walking down the street, a cop sees you, maybe he's having a bad day, maybe you roughly match the description of a wanted criminal, he approaches you and asks for you national ID. You don't have it though, because you were just going for a walk. When I was in college cops used to give tickets for jaywalking. Guess what the first thing they asked for... a drivers license! I don't need a drivers license to walk down the street, I need it go drive a car because that is a privilege and not a right. I shouldn't need any form of ID to walk down the street. I am who I say I am and it's the police's responsibility to prove otherwise (innocent until proven guilty of obstruction of justice) even if I did commit another offense.
This thing only has 4 ports? Is there some other add on that splits one of the ports in to 3 or 4 more ports? I also don't think an accelerometer is worthy of taking up one of those precious ports all to itself. I think this is a step in a nice direction, but I don't think it lives up to it's potential, or is valuable to the average non-geek consumer.
The only way I can foresee this being useful is if they locate the ship in international waters but close enough to shore to still have a really kick ass connection.
Dead Collector: Bring out yer dead! [Hits gong]
Public: Here's one.
Dead Collector: Ninepence.
HD-DVD: I'm not dead!
Dead Collector: What?
Public: Nothing. Here's your ninepence.
HD-DVD: I'm not dead!
Dead Collector: 'Ere, he says he's not dead.
Public: Yes he is.
Public Well, he will be soon, he's very ill.
HD-DVD: I'm getting better!
Public: No you're not, you'll be stone dead in a moment.
Dead Collector: Well, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.
HD-DVD: I don't want to go on the cart!
Public: Oh, don't be such a baby.
Dead Collector: I can't take him.
HD-DVD: I feel fine!
Public: Well, can't you wait around a couple of minutes, he won't be long.
Dead Collector: No, I promised the Robinsons, they've lost nine today.
Public: Well, when's your next round?
Dead Collector: Thursday.
HD-DVD: I think I'll go for a walk.
Large Man: You're not fooling anyone, you know. Isn't there anything you could do?
HD-DVD: I feel happy. I feel happy.
[The Dead Collector glances up and down the street furtively, then silences the HD-DVD with a whack of his club]
Public: Ah, thanks very much.
Dead Collector: Not at all. See you on Thursday.
Wikipedia has a pretty good article on the topic that I read a few months ago. Be forewarned Websense views some of these prediction market sites as gambling. So, I wouldn't view them at work. Specifically Intrade.
I believe the generally accepted answer to this question was René Descartes'. Cogito ergo sum. "But there is a deceiver of supreme power and cunning who is deliberately and constantly deceiving me. In that case I too undoubtedly exist, if he is deceiving me; and let him deceive me as much as he can, he will never bring it about that I am nothing so long as I think that I am something. So, after considering everything very thoroughly, I must finally conclude that the proposition, I am, I exist, is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind. (AT VII 25; CSM II 16-17)"
I know I exist, why should I care if everything else is an illusion?
The whole story reminded me of the Wes Mendell rant on the Studio 60 pilot episode. Too bad that show too was eventually stripped of its edge.
In my opinion, the best news show format is PTI and it's unfortunate that it's a sports show. To be completely unbiased there needs to be two people playing "devil's advocate" for a liberal and conservative bias. The two should debate for a predetermined period of time until a bell goes off and they move onto the next topic.
Assuming the current price of electricity is $0.10/kWh it will pay for itself in ~1.14 years. However, that does not include the cost of installation, a rectifier, or batteries/controller.

Once I saw the word paradigm in the summary I just glazed over like I do whenever our CEO gives a speech.

According to Wikipedia Lodz's; tram is called the Cityrunner by Bombardier. A picture of a tram is on wikimedia commons.

Now all we have to do is get them to use Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

You can't fire me! Because I removed this from the transmitter and only I know where it goes.
