I call BS! Columbus was backed by a government and made several trips back and forth. It was only after he went that settlers followed.

The settlers were people who were so fed up with the way their government was run that they would risk everything they had to escape it. Although I'm sure getting the ship and supplies was expensive for the day, it's no where near as expensive as it will be to get to Mars. Therefore Mars settlers will have to be unhappy with the government and require a great deal of money.

I don't know about you, but I like to be able to, I don't know, pop out for some milk and fresh tomatoes, stroll down to the fountain where the pretty girls walk by, go for a coffee or a beer or an ice cream, perhaps even walk to work! This is supposed to be a democracyâ"why build such misery for yourselves?

I like those things also. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees. There are a number of factors that drive urban sprawl in the US:
    1) Housing is expensive in the city and land is much cheaper away from the city.
    2) People enjoy the freedom of an automobile (something they have to give up living in the city)
    3) There is a belief that the city is dangerous and not suitable for raising children.
    4) There is a belief that children need a backyard (I honestly never understood this one at all, what good is a backyard when your friends live 10 miles away?)
    5) There is a belief that the city is unhealthy so they move away for the "fresh air"
In the end I think it has to do with an American desire to live in 1950s small town America, but all of the jobs are in major cities. I've noticed that there has been a recent shift toward moving into the city among recent college graduates. I think well planned colleges have made people aware of the fact that they don't have to rely on a car to go everywhere, and services like Zipcar have made people realize that a car is available if they need it.

+1 for alcohol. I used to clean out old tape recorders with it, and it's the only thing I will use to clean electronics. Plus, it's widely recommended for dealing with waterlogged cell phones. It also evaporates quickly.

Note: It's best to dry out your electronics before they get to this state. Damage may have already been done by corrosion of the contacts.

real factors far outweigh psychological ones in any sound economy.

Tell me about this "sound economy" I've never heard of it.

During times of economic difficulty, people cut back on luxury items and other discretionary spending, which increases savings. But again, this is due to real economic factors, and is in fact beneficial to the economy: increased savings makes more funds available for investment.

Not if they are keeping their money in their mattress because they fear the banks will fail.

This is true insofar as it applies to our fiat monetary system, which requires that people use otherwise-worthless paper as a store of value. But it is not an inherent quality of a sound economy, which must be based on using real capital to produce real goods to satisfy real demand.

What do you suppose we use instead? I've got news for you, gold and silver have no more inherent value than paper. Are you suggesting we go back to bartering?

Maybe extra government spending on the war stimulated the economy. But nothing about that stimulus required a war, and indeed without the war it could have been done much better and less wastefully.

You forget that economics has a psychological aspect to it. During the depression, people were fearful to spend and loan out money. There was a sentiment of distrust among people. The war changed that, it united people to a common goal. Unions ended strikes, and people began to loan out money in the form of war bonds. The money from those bonds were given/loaned to companies to hire and train more people. These people could then afford to buy bonds, completing the economic cycle.

Our economy is a closed loop system that works because people believe in it. Without confidence in the system, it fails. This is why surveys of consumer confidence are made, and the results of which are used by the Federal Reserve to determine its policies.
