Why would you close down two screens instead of using them for more showings? If they anticipated a huge crowd this would maximize profits, in theory. But it would also lose them credibility in the long run with people not interested in the movie left with no alternative.

It's because flashy, empty action movies with a large effects budget draws a huge crowd. They always have - but the international market for these it's bigger than ever And the effects don't have to be perfect because it's a comic book. Just be glad it's not Michel Bay directing them. There are still good movies being made. Some of them doesn't to streaming.

I'm not sure how obscured that would be considered to be under the circumstances.

  9. That belief is why Amazon thinks they can get away with it. They have zero need to cut costs at their profit level. Pure capitalism's greed might dictate it but they would walk away with a healthy profit either way.

The rules were originally there to keep out low-quality TV movies. The rules then started shifting to intentionally block all sorts of things.

  25. Because made-for-TV movies have been around for a long time and had been mostly crap for a long time. So it's far less work to not even evaluate these as entries. Now, though, there are major films outside the traditional distribution system. HBO has had their share of self-produced movies too - Netflix is not the first - but enough had changed that it's only now that this conversation is due.
