Probably not many people. Where I'm from (midwest US) June Bugs are May Beetles (see below for picture links) and May Flies have always been May Flies. But in any case, who ever came up with the idea of calling Cicadas June Bugs?

doesn't count.
So I guess genome processing doesn't count as a counter example to your FUD?

perl thrashes and crashes trying to crunch seriously large amounts of data.
No, your pathetically puny little machine thrashes and crashes trying to crunch seriously large amounts of data with that script you threw together in 15 minutes while ignoring all the comments in the Camel Book about performance implications of things like "@array = <FILE>". Perl is written in C, and runs just fine when used appropriately.
Last time I checked, I could start a shell a lot faster than I could start any of the bloated monstrosities that call themselves spreadsheet programs these days.
None of the games you list holds any appeal for me, so again: I see no compelling reason. Beyond that, I thought Bleem or other similar software made a lot of that moot as well....
closed model companies rather resemble the Stalinist or Maoist model of a command economy with complete centralised control.
Clearly written by someone who doesn't work in the industry. While there is control from the top and heirarchy, it definitely is not always a "command economy". In my experience and reading, many companies have project teams that come up with ideas, that are then built into products via a competetive process, not a "command" process.
Seems to me someone had their OSS hat on too tight--there are certainly benefits and advantages of OSS, but statements like this take it too far and destroy any credibility you might have to talk about the real issues.
There's a reason why libertarian political thought includes the idea of ENLIGHTENED self interest, not just plain fucking greed. Plain fucking greed is so shortsighted it doesn't end up actually being the optimal solution for "making money" over any sustainable time period. That's the point I was trying to make in a more reasonable way, but apparently you missed it. Along with that bit about the golden goose only having one more egg, so maybe they need to do (b) so there's actually a future after the next Star Wars movie. See point 1 above regarding plain fucking greed.
Maybe if someone could come up with a compelling value proposition for consoles, fewer of us would be so ignorant. Personally, I already have spent enough money on this general purpose box here that I know can play lots of varied games. I can't think of any game I've seen on a console that I couldn't play on my PC if it were coded for it. Why I should then spend additional money on single purpose, vendor locked boxes that clutter up my entertainment center is a complete mystery to me.
If they can make more money from a Sam & Max than making Star Wars: Cantina Racer, don't you think they'd do it?
Because of course, making the most money on every single release, with a threshhold set by the effortless to market Star Wars franchise, is the very definition of success. Never mind all the other aspects of success. Never mind the examples thoughout our history of those who allow money money money to be their ultimate and only goal, only to completely lose their way and crash and burn.
There is balance to be had. Having a golden goose should free you to take risks in other places, not make you so risk averse that you become a snivelling gollumlike miser.
A Sam and Max FPS could be insanely cool and funny. Toss in some frying pans, giant mallets and fire hoses, and all of a sudden you've got first-person cartoon action.
They used to make money by being innovative and releasing funny and great games like Sam & Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle, and later Grim Fandango. Now they seem to think they can only make money by rehashing yet another tired Star Wars game. Companies who devolve to that point don't continue to make much money for much longer (especially given that their golden goose only has one more egg that they can definitively rely on).
Yeah, right. Many people here would be aware of it, and it certainly wouldn't be hidden by the linux community, but the slashdot editors sure wouldn't consider it front page worthy. I personally have pointed out previously that Linux is no magic panacea, only to get modbombed to -1. Hm. That could easily be editorial behavior too, no telling.
The charge about Solaris bashing isn't against the community at large here either. Nobody's trying to discredit the "people" here, just commenting on the submitter and the editor who passed it on.
I ported my old Sprint number (about 3 years old) to Verizon two weeks ago. I had the "it may take up to 48 hours" speech too, but it only took a couple. No problems. I didn't move state to state, but other than that possible complication my experience doesn't seem like a big lie.

And besides, they have a REALLY IRRITATING site design.
No FoodTV, no sale.
This shouldn't be a Brit only thing; I wasn't exposed to much British culture until Dr. Who was on PBS, and I knew this way before that.
Which appears to prove his point.
In other words, the insurance companies are exercising their powers of extortion to get what they want. Woo hoo!

I've always been worried about people steeling my woodbees too.

Obviously some moderators have misplaced their sense of humor. Perhaps it wasn't funny, but it was hardly a troll.

Where can I buy this?!?! It must be mine!

I can't see them doing that much work every 3 months. Really.
I want to know how the mechanics get into a welded shut hood to effect a repair.
Dismal? I rather liked the cartoon, and thought it did a decent job (modulo the geek) of portraying the original sense of the comic.
