Riddle me this: why does apt-get install xmltv not actually install xmltv? Been fighting with Debian for three days trying to figure this out (I'm new to Debian). It's downloading the file, I can see the package in my cache, but it's not working--in fact the whole reason I'm doing "install" is because "upgrade" on my system DELETED the previous version of xmltv I had.
SO, I don't really see that apt-get is necessarily superior to Sun's patches; I haven't found anything in a man page for apt or apt-get, for example, that leads me to debugging information like where does the package database live, etc. It's just different, not necessarily better.
I can figure out why someone MIGHT infer it, but why someone would then respond as if such tenuous inferences were facts contradicting other things I say (yah, I'm going to say "OUR" system of goverment despite being a Canadian?) can only be explained by their being a moron.
Let's see, explanation one: this Canadian, with a Canadian quote he seriously believes in his sig, is trying to masquerade as an American, OR explanation two: this American, who has a Canadian quote he thinks is funny in his sig, is commenting on his stupid political system. Hm. Hard decision there.
If you were the only one so mentally blighted, I'd probably let it slide, but I'm very sick of the idiots who keep questioning my legitimacy to comment on my country's politics because I have a quote about a Canadian politician in my sig.
What is it with the morons on slashdot these days? Just because I QUOTED a CONSERVATIVE and RIDICULOUS statement about a politician I never heard of aside from the flap over this particular statment doesn't mean 1) I'm from Ontaria 2) I agree with the statment (I just think it's hilarious).
Why the fuck can't anyone get that through their heads?
This is the same Dick Morris who was run out of the Clinton Campaign for behaving like his boss? Definitely someone I'd listen to when he talks about God....
So, if you want to have government that is democratic while remaining stable and effective, the two party system is really the way to go.
I would argue that our current situation argues against both the "democratic" and "effective" parts of this statement. Our system has been hijacked by big monied interests when it accomplishes much of anything at all. There are occasional exceptions (national do not call list anyone?) but overall they're just a bunch of heads babbling with each other and cutting deals with whoever has the best influence (i.e. most money).
If only judges didn't routinely and specifically rule this out, and either dismiss juries who think otherwise or the jurors who are "agitating" for it.
I have a myth box, but having a 15 month old, have never had the time to actually get it to work (it's assembled, sitting in the living room, never hooked up). The main point about a MythTV box though is that it definitely is NOT a cheap replacement for Tivo. You save subscription fees, but you spend more on hardware and more time hacking with it than you would for a Tivo, as others have pointed out. I'm seriously considering going with a Dish Network offer that gets me a free DVR that has the dish tuner built into it, frees me from the cable company's random rate hikes for no benefit (yah, I know they all do it, but I want to punish them for the latest round), and saves me the hassle of getting the PVR to work.
I'd say Coyote is pretty darn easy too. And no HD or CDROM to worry about. I don't have even ONE fan in that box right now, and it's been running continuously for 3 years. On the other hand, if this could have been run on that box I would have considered whether to switch. C'est la Vie. 250MB is bigger than I want right now.
but i've also found a few gems...i had to work to find them...
Obviously if they were hard work to find, I'm just going to go out of my "sheltered life" and find one right away then?
Here's a clue: I didn't say they were impossible to find; sounds like you said the same thing I implied--it's challenging to find a good one. So why then is there slamming of Sun's support because they have salespeople that are like the salespeople everywhere (with the few "hard to find" exceptions)? Support != sales.
If it doesn't exist in Wal-Mart, it doesn't count? That makes sense. I'm pretty skeptical about the wisdom and likely success of JDS at Wal-Mart myself, but that has next to nothing to do with 1) Sun's attitude about Linux or 2) the Chinese JDS deal.
However, looking at the cache for the about page, there's one thing that isn't clear. How does this compare to floppy-based distros like Coyote? In particular, it says absolutely nothing about whether it does or does not require a hard drive. Noise and heat are big considerations for me, and a HD is one of the biggest sources of both....So can I run Smoothwall without a HD or CD?
Did you read the review? You know, where the reviewer said "W. Richard Stevens didn't live to see the 3rd edition published, and the new book has Bill Fenner and Andrew M. Rudoff listed as co-authors." (with a link even) Ok, they didn't mention that it was 1999, but can you explain what is particularly relevant about that?
Maybe the problem is that Darl has delusions of being CEO of Microsoft then?

The main point, I believe, was that gaming the system "back atcha" to get yours out of a system that is broken is bogus. If she's not able to recoup her costs with legitimate fees, all "working around" does is keep the system going. So that the insurance company thinks they're doing the right thing, instead of having a bunch of customers being billed for reasonable interpretation time and revolting against them.
And people would just print out powerpoint slides anyway.

Just don't vote for Dalton McGuinty.

My favorite is login biteme, password biteme.
who wanted to follow up with "in the Dope Show".
Well, what Access calls SQL doesn't really pass for SQL in the rest of the world, but they claim to be compatable.

I appreciate the advice; no need here for a three room system (only 1 TV), but otherwise both these followups have good points.
We ain't got no steenking spare time in my house, and that's with only ONE child.

Does GAIM work for IM/chat? It's there.
BTW I challenge you to find me an IT Sales Person who doesn't have the exact same attitude about their products.
Which is of course why Sun is making all these large deals based almost entirely on the strength of JDS on SuSE Linux.

Naw, Unix is obsolete.

More simply put, two wrongs don't make it right.
