No mention is made in the review of the answers to your questions; however, I'd be really surprised if those issues aren't at least considered in the book, since they are, after all, so bloody obvious.

Also, management becomes a bit different when you don't really know where your employees are sitting on any given day. No longer is "management by walking around" a possibility.

    1) there's a system to view who is sitting where (at least what they've reserved, they may not actually be in the seat at any given moment). Very handy when you want to find Joe SE to talk to him about the account, not just when you're Joe's manager.

    2) while there are no assigned cubes, it's common to have "neighborhoods" where a given group tends to congregate. So if I want to talk to one of the SE's on a particular account, I know where they usually hang out; if that doesn't work, see 1).

Just to be clear, I'm not someone who said it will never run out (never say never, and all that). Just that The DoomSayers [tm] continually predict the end of Life As We Know It [tm] without taking into account that new technologies always seem to come along and help extend the life of whatever it is they're predicting the end of. In the case of oil, we now have technologies for squeezing oil out of places that we thought were out of reach before.

This doesn't mean we'll always be able to sqeeze another drop, simply that predictions of The End [tm] are always wrong.

The movie skates on all this because 1) it was a simple story and 2) it had amazing effects. Lucas got lucky, being in the right place at the right time, and now millions have childhood memories that give the movie much more glow than it really ever had. It was a basic space opera. Lucas hasn't so much lost his touch as he's decided that giving the fans the backstory is more important than K.I.S.S.
