Several years ago, I noticed something about a patch of skin. I looked it up and asked the dermatologist about it. He, of course, ignored me and the question.

I had been right from the get go, though he would never admit it.

The Russians had the Great Patriotic War, which was exclusively against the Germans and their western allies. They fought in a theater of World War II. Not until very very very late in the day (August 1945) did they do anything whatsoever against Japan.

The reason they had such massive casualties is because the Soviets theory was that if you threw enough people at the Nazis, the Nazis would run out of bullets.

If you've been in school, you've encountered one.

The old school approach was the cumulative final. Girls did poorly on that so research was done on how girls could do better. What they found was that girls would do better (and boys worse) when there were more tests, more quizes and more homework. So the curriculum was changed to the system which played to girls' strength and boys weaknesses.

According to the data I've seen, when it comes to test time, the boys do rather better than girls. It is homework in particular which girls are better about doing.

Anecdotes: I've seen several professors/teachers independently give similar opinions on what they see in their classrooms. The girls are on average much more dutiful, but those that are inquisitive are overwhelmingly male. And a quote from the article which reminded me of this: "the boys tend to be a little more idiosyncratic in solving problems, the girls more conservative in following what they've been taught."

  23. Re:Ledger was fantastic, but... on Batman Discussion · · Score: 1

Oldman's wonderful Jim Gordon, I think, is overlooked because of how subtle the performance is. No one mentions how terrific he was when evading Dent's questions about the Batman, equipment malfunctions and all. Gordon is portrayed as a damn good guy and that is not easy to pull off without being hokey. I'd pay money to see a Jim Gordon-in-Gotham crime movie.

Eckhart had a hell of a tough role with Dent. He had to be the All-American, tough on crime D.A. as well as portray his deep love for Ms. Dawes (giving him a vulnerability to exploit) and, on top of that, transform into Two Face. All in one film. All in a *supporting* role. That's a lot to have to pull off.

And Bale as Bruce Wayne. I think, of all characters in film or comics, this one character practically invites writers to figure out new ways to torment him. The popular audience, not usually wanting to see a lead character suffer with no end in sight, even expects this to happen to Wayne. Bale does a hell of a job in what is essentially three roles: Bruce Wayne-playboy, the Batman and Bruce Wayne-scarred man, trying to do right in a world permeated with corruption.
