    I have two friends a husband and a wife that stopped quarreling after they got two doom capable machines. Than, when they had something to "say" to each other, they simply sat down and shoot the f... out of each other for half an hour.

    Usually killing things on screen is a good recreation and decreases the possibility that you will exercise violent behaviour in real life.

    From my personal "perverted" point of view doom/quake/etc should are good therapy. You take a break, you kill a couple of monsters and/or your neigbour/wife/schoolmate in virtual reality and you discharge the violence. A very good example for the fertility of this approach are the japanese. They have dolls depicting their bosses to kick and punch in their lunch halls ;-)

    My only question is:

    Katz you started this theme, why the f... did not you reach the obvious conclusion - that violent games are GOOD. Why did you stop at the point that they are NOT BAD. Not enough guts may be?

    Red hat has a too long history of security bloopers. Debian has always been better here.

    So I personally praise this choice. Can you imagine what kind of publicity will linux get if 10000000 boxes will get owned???

    Please see the old press releases about the special agreement between LA and Microsoft. Basically LA is not supposed to release any PC games for anything but Windows and other partnership stuff. It dates somewhere between Dark Forces and the next LA games.

    So actually, LA is obliged to sue these sites under this agreement even if they do not want to...

    Your link is good, but few people can afford it. I would suggest another link - www.amd.com.

    Something not well known by worshipers of the ZD benchmarks is that the AMD main "flaw" - low FPU is meaningless for a Unix system. Actually, when running at the same MHz AMD is even faster then Intel under Linux if the hard disk subsystem is supported by the kernel.

    Personally I prefer Alpha as well, but I cannot afford it ;-). So I use AMD (I did not have an Intel CPU on any of my personal machines for the last 2 years).

    This feature is most important for tracing mobile users. You can now know that the same person who did this and that is during daytime a nice clerk in a suit in a big corporation somewhere.

    Definitely on puprose and I do not believe all this bullshit about unintentional.

    In btw: it was done in the same time while Microsoft did that illegal serial number collection. I wonder did they collect only ethernet addresses?

    It is very hard to make sure that you enter a 32bit OS properly after you have already booted Windows. You do not know who and how initialized which sloppy bugware driver... Still it does worth trying. Having a linux autorun boot would be fun. I imagine some people's faces on this one...

    Anyway even something startable from dos is not a bad idea...

    Sorry dude. This does not scale. You are going to start going into some real network equipment problems and heavy expences after 16-24 nodes.

    So getting a bunch of sloppy boxen is not an idea. There has to a compromise between box speed, box quantity and price of network equipment.

    I do not like this... Seeing is believing... And I see what actually a lot of people see:

    Microway has NDP compilers and libraries that are comparable to Compaq's. Unfortunately not all of them are available for Linux. Unfortunately they also cost money.

    Still, I would bet that you can actually get a very decent special deal if you purchase all the stuff together.

    Overall it depends on the application. GCC is not that bad on Alpha integer. The performance loss is mostly in floating point and math libraries.

    Anyway, I will bet for the Alpha for most of the cases ;-)

    Check www.microway.com for an Alpha cluster priced at 2500$ per node and $4,500 for the master console. This means that for the $150000 used by IBM one could assemble a 50+ node alpha cluster instead of 17 PCs...

    God, when will people ever learn that x86 just does not worth it...

    Everybody, please check www.microway.com before speaking of Yummy, etc. There is no such thing as a Yummy x86 based system.

    On the subject, Microway have been offering Beowulf Alpha clusters for quite a while. Actually they were even supposed to present one at the Linux expo, but it looks like nobody have noticed it. This is understandable because as you can see from the pictures their stuff does not look that shiny. But it works...

    And I bet that it can blast any x86 based box out of the sky...

    So even the probability to cause a WWIII would not make some idiots change encryption regulations. They complain about being attacked through cracked computers on ex-"enemy 1" networks but they forget to mention that they have done everything they can to create this situation.

    Very typical of american politics. They feed terrorists in Afganistan and Algeria for years and after that they are concerned that american tourists (f.e. one of Intel vice-CEOs) are being killed. They do anything they can to prevent computers around the world from being secure and after that they complain that they are being f... from russian boxes. Just brilliant...

    1. Most of the Linux community is paid or will be paid. The mere difference is that they are being paid or shall be paid not for what they write, but for what they do with the stuff they write.

    2. Every UCB student, MIT student, etc has to learn how to do stuff. Go and learn kernel programming with M$ if you can... Or design a market analysis system using MSWord+Excel

    Also the price per student capita using free and "free" systems is much lower so it is simple economical/educational common sense.

    3. You are correct that Linux/*BSD and friends are payed indirectly. You are wrong about the rest - they give a reasonable economical leverage in all small or very large environments. And this is common sense (or money if you prefer to call it this way).
