This guy is an idiot. Wikileak's owner is on the Interpol's most wanted list and half the U.S. calling for your head. The issue is so hot right now, doing anything remotely involved with the Wikileak site - good or bad - is going to get your ass hunted by SOMEBODY.
America is just as polarized as they were during the elections and the Republican party -- though strong -- is encountering a weird kind of fragmentation for better or for worse.
So we can start to hope a third party will show up on the scene? One can only hope.
Not really, I lay it at the feet of Ubuntu for that. They knew early on that a major showstopper bug existed with Nvidia & Xorg 1.9 and they should have made the decision not to upgrade until the fix was done and tested.
Just for me, the biggie was the new Xorg 1.9 which broke almost every nvidia-produced driver out there. Mine (nvidia 96) was the last to get fixed. I had to put off upgrading for about a month until it was fixed.
I realize bitching about waiting a month extra for a new release makes me sound like a douchebag, but when it's something as high profile as display drivers I must take offense.
Agreed. My old creative webcam *FINALLY* works. Now, if I could get Kopete to recognize it I'd be set.
Siderant: Why is it that Kopete can't seem to keep up with Pidgin on their little items when it beats the blue hell out of Pidgin in the big-time stuff like webcam (when it works!), theme integration, identity grouping and the like? I mean little things like 'sort by recent activity', 'last seen', and 'psychic mode'. It's the little things like that which keep me from going back to Kopete full time. That and Kopete liking to eat memory like crazy.
I think everyone is missing the point here with Mythbusters. Is there science dicey at times? Absolutely. Is the scientific method rigorous? Not even close. Is it entertaining? You bet your ass. I would much rather sit down with my son and watch episodes of Mythbusters over almost anything else on TV. Why? First and foremost, nobody dies or raped or anything like that. Second, it gives them an entertaining package and at the same time maybe they learn something from it. Teaching is 25% knowledge and 75% theatrics. If my child gets hooked on doing experiments or tinkering with electronics and machines from watching Mythbusters, mission fucking accomplished.
Were you going for the main Canonical (Ubuntu) repositories? I know sometimes the secondary repositories are hit & miss.
I won't lie - that's a bizarre case. Too bad it didn't work for you though. I've used different flavors of Ubuntu for 4 years and I can't imagine returning to Windows.
I'm with you on checking out LXDE-based Distros, although my previous experience with Lubuntu was not overly pleasent on my old laptop. Long story short it just wasn't polished enough and had stuff that just didn't work - namely wireless. I have found Kubuntu + LXDE pretty much the sweet spot between speed and usability. Although I will say I much prefer Opera to Chromium. Twice the features and just as fast.
Disclaimer: I am Canadian, so I didn't vote for Obama (although I would have).
The Obama administration has turned out far worse than GWB's eight years with respect to the digital age. For all the command they had of social media and running under the 'change' they were bringing with them, they sure seem to want to bow to their old masters.
This was four years ago and I was refering to the WGA crack specifically. I doubt I would have stayed on windows much longer regardless, but WGA pushed me over the edge.
I'm with you in the sense I think it's a good idea. Pidgin has done this for a while now by combining the history of multiple IM accounts together under a single person and I have found it invaluable. Now facebook is adding in the next piece. Obviously the privacy issues will loom large and become more prominent then ever, however it is a masterstroke. I can see all the big players doing that in six months.
Now if we could get the same functionality through a combination of Thunderbird & Pidgin or Kmail & Kopete on the desk & laps of the world, that would be ideal.
The WGA was the single biggest reason I jumped ship for Linux - it was too big a pain in the ass to keep doing cracks. The only losses were my webcam, and my 24/7 availability of Civ4 and the original Call of Duty.
Didn't the EU just last year force Microsoft to unbundle Internet Explorer from it's operating systems? I'm pretty sure this would fall under antitrust and even if it doesn't it will make a lot of agencies look REALLY hard at Microsoft again. Who thought this was a good idea?
How much do we bitch about Debian's "Not released until it's ready" credo? How many distros didn't jump ship to KDE4 until 4.2 came out? Gnome has been at 2.x for years and it doesn't get much more stable then that. Also, closed source is no different - witness Microsoft's complete jump in GUI from 2000 to XP to Vista. The only difference is that with open source we get to see the new stuff go from Alpha to Beta to released. We only see closed source when it's released.
First, they've known this was coming for ages. P2P have been around well over a decade and everybody knew people were downloading movies and TV shows and watching them on their computer. It's just hitting bigtime mainstream now and Netflix was the first commercial entity which did it right.
Second, the 'Will Porn/Youtube/Torrents/P2P/Netflix/etc Destroy The Internet?" articles have been around for ages. The providers adapt, the technology adapts.
Where we get a Positronic Brain from this.

My kingdom for mod points!
But seriously, he was a funny funny guy. And Now I'm going to have to have a Police Squad/Naked Gun/Airplane movie marathon. There goes the week!
Did you look for a PPA for it? That's where I found mine.
I wanted to upgrade for a bunch of LXDE packages myself. I see a lot of improvement from them so I like to keep on top on it.

I have often felt we are one of the more sane countries with respect to the digital age, but seeing this I believe we are all F***ed.
I guess I should start voting Pirate party.

I assume with your comment 'Ethernet works fine' that you can browse the net with no problems. What does it say when you try to update?
As well, have you tried the Ubuntu Forums? They are simply awesome when trouble shooting.

There were only six DIY sites listed. You couldn't put a link to ANY of them?
Actually, I only knew about instructables... Good to know! Winter is a-comin'
You can't just setup a radio transmitter and start giving any music you want to your listeners.
I disagree:

Oh C'mon! Mod parent up! That was FUNNY!
Um, what? How is this insightful?

The technology opens the door for everything from holographic surgery to movies that literally surround the viewer."
Say it with me everyone! HOLODECK!
