  1. Obvious on In-Car Technology Becoming More Important Than Horsepower · · Score: 1

Why is anyone surprised by this?

I'm a lapsed car enthusiast (I wrench on mountain bikes and my home now) and this is pretty obvious for a few reasons:
    1) The average consumer doesn't care about additional handling and power. Never has.
    2) Nowadays car groups handle about the same.
    3) Kia would blow to doors off a 50s sports car on moguls and be right behind it in a straight line.

We are at the point of 'good enough'. Much like CDs have become good enough. Why push for more when you don't need it?

I'm a mechanical engineer by trade, and I haven't seen a load-transfer problem in a decade or better, so my eyes would glaze over as well. And I believe everyword. In one of my previous jobs I saw some of the most unholy and unworkable structural designs I could have imagined. It scared me how anyone could think they were acceptable. I think the breaking apart of the two specialties was a epic failure. My university had the two faculties merged for the first 20 or 30 years of it's existence.

Oh god no - never! :P

I will be the first one to acknowledge Engineers can epiccally fuck up. Lord knows I've done some big ones, although thankfully only money was lost, not lives. In fact, in Canada we have what is called The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer for all graduating engineers which is to remind ourselves of the consequences of what we do. In fact, during this ceremony we are given iron rings which (according to legend) are forged from the iron from a collapsed Quebec bridge.

It reminds me of a quote I heard in university: Architects make it pretty. Engineers make it work. Yes, it's a trollish quote but the more I deal with 'creative' types the more it's proven true.

I agree with everything you say but I don't think that was what the GP post asked. It could work as a type of mesh, and it could certainly solve the issue with broadband making it to almost everyone who purchases electricity, but I wonder about the difficulty of running internet over unshielded wire that is already at 15+ kV bare minimum. I honestly think OTA internet (like the type which is being put in place here) is the future.

In the "Godfather Part II" the immigration officer is in a hurry and mixes up the last name and town of origin, in a few seconds with a stroke of the pen the family's name is changed. All kinds of things happen - birthdays are changed by purpose or accident, people flee Europe to avoid military draft, family memory often trumps official records.

It happened to me. My material grandfather came from the Netherlands and coming through Ellesmere Island the ship's manifest was misread - the 'ij' at the end of the name became 'y'. There had been rumors about the name change but this was the only real proof of what happened. It also allowed me to track down my Dutch ancestors all the way back to 1800.

Side note: The Dutch trump even the Germans when it comes to anal retentiveness of keeping family records. They have births, deaths & marriages for the entire country back to 1800. And the best part was that it was (is?) all searchable circa 2003. I haven't looked at my family tree at all since that time.

It's all about form factor and efficiency. To use a car analogy, the past number of years were the horsepower wars of the late 60s & early 70s. Now we have seen a switch to fuel (energy) economy as the main driver of development.

That being said, I think it's cool this is a possible future - it's not that be need more power, we need a different way of doing the job.
