The idea that individuals were completely blameless in the financial crisis is silly.

IMO it's not so much that as the fact that the banks made really irresponsible loans.

Generally I'd say it's not only stupid but flat-out unethical for banks to give out loans to people they know can't repay them. They're just waiting for the other shoe to drop. When you have a few thousand of these loans floating around, well... look what happens.

We need to keep saying this over and over again. All I see in the news is Iran, Iran, Newt Gingrich, and then some more Iran followed by a delightful yogurt commercial starring Jamie Lee Curtis.

But seriously, this is the exact sort of build-up they're trying to go for.

They say the military is always fighting the last war. I think the government is the same way. After 9/11, this probably would have worked. The vast majority of us were shaken with fear and about as pliable as a politician's moral code. They're trying the same tricks again and figuring they'll work.

If we're stupid enough to try to invade Iran, there will be a massive shitstorm stateside.

this is why my two boys refuse to even vote

Your two boys are very misguided.

Haven't your heard the whole "when good men do nothing, evil flourishes" bit? How about getting politically active with someone who's not an outright scumbag? Even if it's just on the local level - county government, city council, hell - school board even, they can effect a change. If they sit on their asses and decide not to vote because the "system is rigged", then they're just as responsible for the state of our country as the people who are voting for these idiots in the first place (if not more).

And yes, I vote. Yes I'm politically active. I spend a few days researching the candidates coming up for election and choose the one that I think will do what I believe to be best for my city, state, county, or country. Sometimes I don't see a good options and just put down a write-in of someone I could trust to be competent. It's not ideal, but I think I am doing far better than the average voter myself who just checks off the ballot down party lines.

If we keep squabbling over insignificant shit, which party is better, etc. we're going to go absolutely fucking nowhere but down as a country.

This is an opportunity for geeks to do something useful here.

What we need is a device with a video camera and microphone. Once the "record" button is depressed, it records and automatically uploads everything it captures to an off-site server that is secured w/ encryption. Moreover, it doesn't stop recording until a code is entered (to prevent a cop from tampering with it). With the cheapness of electronics nowadays we could probably create something like this for less than a hundred bucks (fees for transmission notwithstanding).

Or maybe just an iPhone/Android app...

IMO, the best way to deal with stuff like this is to tell people the motivations behind the actions and hateful messages as best as you know them.

Darling, the dieting companies are saying you are fat because they want you to think you are not fine the way you are. Then you'll sign up for their food delivery service and give them your money.

The makeup companies want you to think you're ugly so you'll buy their makeup to be "pretty".

And so on. I've told younger friends, kids of friends, etc. that whenever you worry about something like that, think more about the motivation of the person saying it. "This guy is saying I'm weak because he wants my money."

Sir, don't torture yourself any longer. The BSA has proven time and time again that they are completely unwilling to change their position on the issues of homosexuals and non-believers. Join an alternative scouting organization - or better yet, form a troop for one of them if you don't have one in your area - and do things the way the boy scouts should be doing them. Be accepting of everyone regardless of race, creed, orientation, etc. Teach the kids the same skills, the same life lessons.

My high school was very, very diverse. (Hell, we had our own GLAAD chapter). When I was younger, I wasn't really exposed to people from other countries (save the standard dominant ethnicity of your local neighborhood, in my case Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian people). The most important lesson I learned at that school is that there's nothing especially different or strange about people from different cultures. I had friends from 20 different countries speaking 20 different languages. I learned more about the world in my time at that school than I had in any history class. The Scouts have the potential to be the same way, but they foolishly squander it.

Finish out the year with your troop, leave, tell them why you are leaving, and go support an organization that actually fits into the modern world.
