Not that I know anymore then you do, but I think pirate ISP is just them taking a name that induces more controversy. Not that they do not want people to pay for anything digital.
But the problem is that New Zealand cannot control most of these patents. "This has led to many a 'patent troll' company, primarily in the US" If they allowed some, then they could still face litigation and the small software companies would still have to defend themselves (and potentially still go out of business), even if it is likely to be denied because New Zealand would not accept the patent.
So they could accept some and probably have to spend a lot of money to figure out which ones are in this "some" and probably still have some trouble with businesses suffering unfairly and innovation being stifled.
"The point is that serial killers are violent for no reason, for no cause, for no purpose other than to get a thrill. They are like individuals who torture for the fun of it. How is this trait useful for a society as modern as ours? If it were so useful we wouldn't be putting them in cages."
Is that all that different from liking action movies, FPS, or in an extreme case possibly even being able to enjoy meat?
And I doubt that genes dictate the reason, Humans like being violent (to varying degrees) it is this violence that allows us to be soldiers, to kill animals for food, to hunt, and to defend ourselves. Take away that and we may cease to be able to function.
For example is their really any big difference between trophy hunting animals or humans? Both are killing for killings sake. One of them seems to just like hunting mammals that stand a chance.
Well it is not as morally/intellectually as easy as you seem to think it is to start messing what it is to be human. and I am sure a lot of it is not genes but learned behavior. While we might be able to turn off humans violent tendencies, violence does have its uses. Without some violence who can say what we would be unable to cope with. and their is a difference between someone able to kill someone and someone that will kill someone else.
Well it all depends on what senses you are using. for example Google could get some x-ray/heat vision gizmo that allowed then to track peoples actions in their homes or a sound amplifier to listen into someones home. While wireless receivers are a lot easier to buy, that does not mean they are fundamentally different. Not that I did not share your opinion as a gut instinct.
It seem pretty obvious to me that we cannot allow art copyright apply to scientific discoveries. No one is going to buy one simply because the handle looks similar (and it is a laser). And it is a handle, it is no wonder that it is similar looking to other handles. Quite a lot of possible future technology has been dreamed up by fiction writers. For example Star Trek could sue cell phone makers (the first ones even admit to being inspired by Star Trek).
But if what you meant was, is this the future of entertainment and art. Meaning: 1) distribution over the internet 2) relatively cheap to make 3) cheap to buy
Then yes, I would agree with you.
Not that it will replace it at all. Their will always be crowds of people lining up to take whatever big media want to shovel them. But I suspect that quite a lot of people are very interested is getting their media from places like this.
When someone finds the area of a triangle, maybe he does not do the actual multiplication and division but he must understand the process. at university we do many complicated calculations, that does not mean we actually do any math by hand. If we did we would 99.9% of the time doing this and get nothing accomplished.
There are no calculators that take a bunch of numbers and somehow understand that they refer to some specific question and return a result.
I would bet that whatever work you do is made easier by some technology that could be said to be doing all your job for you. Well lets not even use work as an example, right now I suppose I am arguing with a computer, since you did not write that comment and you did not transfer that it to my screen, a computer did. all you did was mindlessly type keys without understanding.
I dont understand why someone so hateful towards technology is even on Slashdot.
I would disagree with you that a word has to be in a famous dictionary to be officially a word. and either way after google the verb becoming a "official" word it is only a matter of time(probably a very short time) till tweet is in the dictionary.
And I would also say it is not the same as street slang. IMHO street slang is purposely made to be unprofessional and insulting. Tweet is not this and is as professional (IMHO) as any other word.
I can understand that older people might find it unprofessional but I am assure you that many people find the word and words like it perfectly fine.
your slow adoption of words make you sounds like a angry old man.
Words change and are created all the time, just because google was not a word when you were a kid and it sounds weird to you does not mean that to most 20 somethings it is not as much a part of the language and as professional to use as any other word.
I agree, but this is really just making what is already going on something they are open about.
with this program the kids without laptops can still use one during school, just not at home. so they might have to come in early or go home late to get stuff done.
what I saw going through high school. Their were computer labs, and if kids did not have the required software for projects or computers at home they had to stay late or come early.
Basically the standardization to only one platform can be considered good is some light. Basically they are promising that if you have a mac and know how to use one, then you will not have any troubles on the computer side of learning, because you will have suddenly have a project that requires you to use a Linux or windows machine.
So so sum up, kids are already basically required to have a computer to not be at a disadvantage. this changes nothing but the standardization to mac.
And I doubt that anyone would hold having a different computer against you, if you can do the same work on a Dell windows machine or dual boot or virtualize mac, the student would most likely be fine.
Well while a laptop should not be required to learn anything a computer should be.
The fact is that almost everything is now done by computers or by people using them.
To not have children learning using computers means you are not teaching them to use the computer. sure you could have a few courses that teach computer use and then everything else is a technology no go zone but that would not be enough.
Computers are at the core of everything, and unless students are as comfortable using one as they are in breathing then they are at more of a disadvantage then if they are not comfortable using a pen and paper.
"for those ranked Group 2 or lower, their entire daily routine consists of eating, cleaning, laundry, and games"
I know from having watch previous documentaries that they are also supposed to keep up their physical fitness with exercise. You cannot have fast enough reflexes to compete professionally if you are not in very good shape.
You cannot be a professional in anything without commitment. people play sports as "an amusement or pastime" but that does not mean that professional sports players do not replace working 9-5 with practicing whenever they feel like it.
Pro gaming can get quite intense through out all the world (I would say mainly since they all have to be young, and therefore more easily taken advantage of).
But that description does not sound all that different from descriptions I have heard of other professional sport athletes in china, not sure how this compares to South Korea.
scientists, in general, do not have strong views against religion. Scientists are used to politely disagreeing with people that do not share their views, and having their views challenged and proven wrong. it is the uneducated that have complete certainty in their opinions want to kill everyone that disagrees with them.
Not that I know anymore then you do, but I think pirate ISP is just them taking a name that induces more controversy. Not that they do not want people to pay for anything digital.
"With more than 854,000 people currently holding a TS clearance"
That is a lot of people.
Their is no way they keep much secret with that many people having access to it.
But the problem is that New Zealand cannot control most of these patents.

of course you are right, change "scientific discoveries" to "actual science".
and that should work better.
It seem pretty obvious to me that we cannot allow art copyright apply to scientific discoveries.
No one is going to buy one simply because the handle looks similar (and it is a laser). And it is a handle, it is no wonder that it is similar looking to other handles.

Over 37% of the internet is porn (http://idle.slashdot.org/story/10/06/16/1722258/Over-a-Third-of-the-Internet-Is-Pornographic)
therefore porn sites have a far smaller probability for malware then non porn sites.
Sounds more like a feature then a bug to me.
Well first off it is not television.
But if what you meant was, is this the future of entertainment and art.

It is a different lvl of work.

The verb google has already been added the new Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Tweet is a word, same as all the rest. and while it is more then possible that it will fade from style that does not mean that it should not be used.
if you are looking back at really old news articles you most likely want to know what it was like back then and the lingo is part of that.
Sure it makes it harder to understand, but no one reads 40 yo new papers to get cold hard facts.
