So what you're saying is, your average corporate type thinks that wearing a tie makes people better workers (even though it doesn't). Thus all the companies that want to be successfull force dress codes and get the business because of it, thus enforcing this stupid fucking idea that you have to dress smart to be able to code.
Unfortunatly, Yes. That IS the problem. Your company must not be to critical mass yet. Once you hit a certain number of employees, you'll probably see the same exact thing there as I saw here ( Where we used to be Jeans/T-Shirts instead of polo/dress slacks ).
Thankfully I'm still in a company where they realise that coding is not related to wearing a tie. (we happen to be a very successful company as well)
Until they hire a few MBA's who think your company needs to "brand" itself.
Or get the job first, then dye the hair or whatever. Once you're in the door and they value you as an employee they won't care if your hair is a different colour.
Are you sure about that ? in this day and age ( at least in the US ) you are nothing to the company execpt a body. As an "At Will" employee, you can ( and just might) be fired for any reason at all.
Toss in a 2nd PC, use Mon, and use Linux HA and you've got yourself a high availability cluster that can route almost TCP IP or UDP traffic for far less cost than a "real" load balancer not to mention can do far MORE than a load balancer.
We are using LVS and HA at my 9to5 job for load balancing our new Webservers. ITs super reliable. We have it such that within 10 seconds of a web server not being available, its removed from the LB. Once its back up and running, it adds the server back in automatically.
While it's true that the law could just be renewed, it gives all the lobby groups a second chance at getting their own special needs taken care of, or having the bill become the parent for an un-attractive rider that ends up killing the whole thing.
That's the big thing. Riders not 100% relevent to the law should NOT be allowed. We wouldn't have them attaching things to funding bills ( like the new National ID crap ).
the people who shop at Wal-Mart care about one thing, and one thing only: low prices.
Wrong. Not ALL people shop there for the pricing. Some people shop there because there is NO alternatives. We used to have other department store chains. Caldor, Lechmere, Bradlees, Zayer, and Ames. They are all out of business.
Right now ALL that is left is Target, Wal-Mart, and K-Mart . They do NOT carry the same things. K-Mart doesn't carry 1/2 the items that the other stores did. So now where do I go ? If I need a product, what choice do I have ?
Bullshit! You have all the clout you could possibly need. Ever been to a voting booth? Believe me, they'll start listening as soon as you all get enough balls to vote them out of office. If you won't do that, then quit your belly-aching! The problems you have with your gov't are YOUR fault! And your neighbors are accomplices in this crime.
That's the problem. Too many people don't understand the ramifications of the laws. I do vote but too many people vote a party line ( "My Dad/Mom was a XXXXXXX, so I am too. I always vote for the XXXXXXX party" . They also think "Politicians are crooked, but not MINE !" .
They fail to realize that a politicians sole job is to keep getting re-elected.
The DMCA is having very far-reaching effects, all of which I'm sure were not contemplated or foreseen by the people who drafted the DMCA.
Bullshite. They knew exactly what the law would be used for and by whom. This law was drafted for the sole purpose of kissing the collective asses of big business.
The thing I hate about this sort of legislation, is that once it's on the books, it's very difficult to get repealed.
Which is why they just keep writing new laws to do the same thing as older laws ( just adding new "technologies" ) rather than changing the old laws to be more technology neutral.
Other than calling and writing to our representatives, how else do we make our concern known?
We can't. In general, we don't have enough clout to get the politicians to even listen to us, let alone to get them to actually hear us.
The thing is, most ISPs already limit your max bandwidth. If I pay for 1.5Mb/1.5Mb, I want to get the bandwidth that I pay for; it'd be completely unfair otherwise. If the ISP is overselling their capacity, that's *their* problem, not mine.
I would be out of luck, given the code that the music industry wants. I run four minor-use websites, and serve about a dozen services (mostly to myself), including a streaming music station so that I can listen to my music when I'm at work. Given this "code", I'd be gone in a heartbeat.
Any ISP that agrees to such a code can forget my business in a heartbeat.
Then do what I do. Have a business DSL where you can run as many servers as you want. No bandwidth "limits" other than what you pay for ( I have a 1M/1M SDSL )
requires a service provider to prevent certain access to Internet material harmful to
minors, if requested by the consumer;
So this bill is creating an OPT-IN list, preventing access to sites only to those customers who ask the ISP to do this. How is this violating free speech? If I don't want spam and decide to use a spam filter, am I violating the free speech rights of the spammers ?
"harmful to minors" ? Deemed Harmful by whom ? Is information about birth control, Pregnancy, homosexuality, dealing with being "different", deemable harmful to minors ?
Its state sponsored censorship. Why should ALL the ISP's users be forced to pay for it ( do you think the ISP's will absorbe the cost of this filtering software ? ) instead of forcing the lazy or prudish parents to purchase Net Nanny/etc. to censor things for thier OWN children ?
They shouldn't even exist. It was formed to build the Mass turnpike. The tolls were added to pay the debt of constructing it. It was stipulated by law that it would be toll free once the debts were repaid. It should have been toll free in the 1960s. They keep spending money so it will never be finished.
And parts of it ARE toll free. And what happened ? The pike is not nearly as well maintained as it was before they got rid of the tolls. I don't have a problem paying REASONABLE tolls ( most were like 35 cents ) if it gets me something of value. The pike was the best maintained highway before they got rid of the tolls in the western part of the state. Getting rid of the tolls only really benefitted people who were regularly travelling the pike regularly and those people are now screwed because the pike is so crappy now.
And the ones regularly travelling the pike STILL pay tolls ( because they use it to go to Boston, where the tolls are still in place.
yes, if you're in the US you're paying for it in taxes
Not quite. Its ( I believe ) a primarily state funded project. We people in Western Mass ( Springfield area ) are the ones being screwed by Boston. We pay higher insurance so the crappiest drivers don't have to, we have to pay for the Big Sinkhole.. I mean Big Dig and we're not the ones going to benefit from it.
Ohh and this is just another reason why software patents are completely useless... Just used to stifle competition completely.
They really need to do something about software patents, like set them to only 3 years.
Maybe NOW a company like Apple will realize the stupidity of software patents ? Maybe some of these companies will actually fight back and the counter sue instead of just caving in ?
Obviously. Any parent knows you use the frying pan first.
A 12" Lodge by prefrence.
Is there REALLY any other REAL cast iron frying pan than a lodge ? ( and now that you can get them pre-seasoned, you have no excuse to not own one )...
Journalists' sources are, of course, *not* protected when laws have been broken, as seen in these cases. The obstructing journalists in question weren't protected, either.
Isn't this more of a CONTRACT being broken, not a law ? Someone broke ther NDA CONTRACT. Not quite the same as breaking "the law".
What would the response have been if the article was about how Apple's new products were proven to cause carpal tunnel in less than 1 month of use ? Wouldn't that have been for the public good ( they STILL would have broken their NDA though if the told the public )...
What if they told the public that the current products would not be supported when these new ones come out, that might put someone off from buying the old model ( if the day after they buy it, the new one comes out and it isn't supported anymore ).
neither outlook or ical are really web based, though? it would make sense if they made it to be a web enabled calendar.
There IS a web based version of Outlook. It requres your site to run IIS on their mail server. It uses the same username/password as the mail server uses for outlook.
The government encoureages people to have children. The government would cease to exist if nobody had children, realistically children are like a new car, nobody but the uber-rich can really afford them. (New cars depreciate so quickly you piss away about 30% of the cost, few people can really afford that.)
Really ? I can.. Oh yeah, I don't have children to suck away all my money. And having the government cease to exist ? Is that really such a bad thing ?
Tax breaks help people decide to grow a family. Children root them in the community, calm the raging males, and creates future taxpayers (and soldiers). What's not to like?
Really ? Its a given fact that your children will all contribute to the system and not be lazy leeches sucking on the government teat ? As for community, you sure about that ?
Self-centered, childless, childish, and selfish people like you piss me off!
Why because my wife and I can afford to go out and eat at a nice restauruant, go away for a weekend without worrying about having one of our family have to take care of the kids, because I can afford to buy the latest computer game or gadget because we have made a concious effort to not contribute to the growing over population problem ?
Who do you think will be paying for your Social Security? Or do you really believe the money you paid into the system will be paying your benefits?
No one. I don't expect to get a dime from your spawn. I expect to be supported solely by the 16% of my salary that I put away to PAY FOR MY FUTURE.
And the future holds even more wonders, a Logan's Run remake... THAT movie deserves a remake, the story is great, the flick was AWEFULL, though highly quotable ("Run! Runner!", "Fish, plankton, seagreens! And proteins from the sea!").
Let me guess.. The 1st time you saw "Logan's Run" was on some "Afternoon Matinee" when you were in high school a few years ago ? It was the mid 70's when that movie was done, put it into perspective. It was the same level of acting as Star Wars had at the time.
If you really want a decent summer of movies, how about hollywood come up with something that isn't a remake of ANYTHING ? ( No remakes of any TV shows or OTHER movies, no more remakes of remakes of remakes like Night of the Living Dead, no more crap attempting to pass as even moderately intelligent ).
Don't get me wrong, I do like good sci-fi. I'm been reading/watching it for close to 30 of my almost 40 years of age. There isn't one movie listed that I have the SLIGHTEST desire to go see (another movie of "Bill Preston, Esquire" trying to emote, Ooo.. Logan's run now has a 21 year old death date instead of 30 ?)
Sorry.. I'll just read something that requires more intelligence than the current drek on TV.
Umm.. Well.. If you can't afford the kids, Don't have them.
This is one thing that REALLY pisses me off. I have to pay taxes to support a school when I don't have kids.. Thats FINE, in theory. But when the parents with kids are given tax BREAKS for the very kids that eat into the system, why the hell do they get tax deductions for each spawn instead of a tax increase ?
Why do I get stuck paying more in taxes because my wife and I have chosen to be child free and thus don't have any additional deductions ? Is THAT fair ?
And the 10% in taxes ? Yeesh, I pay roughly 30% in taxes a year and that's WITH putting 16% if my salary into my 401K each year. I pay almost as much as my father MADE a year before his taxes.
Actually there IS an alternative.. Several in fact. My company recently changed to Oracle Collaboration Server (OCS). OCS is IMAP based so that it works with perfectly well with Evolution and there is a Native Linux client for the calendar aspect of things.. Plus Outhouse.... err... Outlook works with OCS (albeit with a plug-in) .
What's the big deal with standards, anyway? He mentions that we should all adopt UTC. Personally, I don't care about adopting it. Even if we did, the business implications face the same challenges. Yes, we'd all be on the same time schedule, but you'd still have to remember when Turkey and India's business hours were.
I would love it. I hate Daylight Savings Time. I work in an industry where we have to publish data on an hourly basis, and the 25 hour day is our biggest pain in the ass. Its a nightmare because in order to display the data correctly, we need to have the UTC time there ANYWAYS. Why not just use it ?

What about using a dog food/cat food grinder ? That should help fit them in a cabinet ?
That's the big thing. Riders not 100% relevent to the law should NOT be allowed. We wouldn't have them attaching things to funding bills ( like the new National ID crap ).

Correct. We have state regulated insurance for one reason.... To keep the rates down for the crappy Boston Drivers.
And parts of it ARE toll free. And what happened ? The pike is not nearly as well maintained as it was before they got rid of the tolls. Right.. And that has what to do with acting ?
There IS a web based version of Outlook. It requres your site to run IIS on their mail server. It uses the same username/password as the mail server uses for outlook.
