I did not come up with this I found it somewhere in the last few days(the origin eludes me I'm afraid) but I think this sums up the whole Yoda thing:

Good eye!! It's from my Score:0 Offtopic comment posted right after I saw the movie in digital on opening night.

A major Karma burn, but at the time I had to post, and I didn't have a convenient target thread. Here was my review, attacched to the videogame thread that night:

Whoop-tee-doo! :P Most of us 12:01am showing folks just got back from Episode II premiers. It's 4am, I saw it in digital with 11 close friends. Concensus reaction:

    OH MY FUCKING GAWD.

    (In a jaw-dropped, wide-eyed, wired-at-3am , good kind of way :)

The big surprise was that we somehow got the "Director's Cut," which according to the theater manager, was 11 minutes longer than the celluloid version. Which makes sense, since we were dispersing behind the 12:05 showing and right alongside the 12:10 showing, both of which were "non-digital" formal.

That's just the thing, there is so little heroic about Jerome at all. You can't tell if his cynicism was there before his accident or not, but his smug elitist attitude clearly was. He covered for Vincent because Vincent was paying the bills, not because he appreciated Vincent's courage.

I agree largely with Wired's list, with the exception of Brazil and The Boys From Brazil, neither of which I have seen. (The two don't appear related.)

Call Gattaca a snoozer if you must, but I would place it in the top 10 SciFi films that I have seen; definitely top three on the scale they used for futurism and plausibility.

I caught Gattaca on HBO by accident (before they jacked up the price to $13.95 a month... I don't like HBO *that* much). By the end of that month I had seen it 4 times. From the cameo of Ernest Borgnine as head janitor to the all-telling final scene; it was so completely and totally plausible that it scared me. (I won't spoil the ending if you haven't seen it, but the good doctor gives us hope that the human spirit will not be overcome by science and "genetic discrimination.")

Rent it! Or if you are a cheap bastard, er, sorry, "poor college student with 10 megabit bandwidth and several hundred gigs of storage," download it. Some put the poo-poo on the film because it does not have enough action (AKA fight scenes and explosions), but the suspense does honor to the memory of Hitchcock. And it is a good story, despite the cardboard cut-out performance of Uma Thurman in the female lead.

Ethan Hawke is excellent, and Jude Law is good as a spoiled genetic-elite with a spinal injury. I liked Jude better as "Gigolo Joe" in AI, though. :)

That's why you can't find any good NT guys. They're all working here at my corp, with 1800 NT4/W2K servers to support. There are 12 of us doing (internal) client consultation, need analysis, installation, config, app loads, support, patching, and monitoring.

I just joined this group from a different area of the bank where I was the "NT guy" and we had 5 serves, All I wanted was a chance to get Win2000 MCP-test training. They said "not in the budget." New group says "MCP within a year is a requirement on your perf review." I am a happy man!

And by the way, if you know what you're doing, and you have a group of solid people behind you, the environment stays stable. Security oversight is handled by our own security division, but we make sure everything is test and configured as it should be. We only see about 3 bluescreens / ASRs per month. Most from NT4 Compaq boxes slated for replacement anyway.

So your yokel "NT guy" is the guy who applied for my job and said "I like to reboot servers when the MMC crashes." I don't profess to know everything, but I take the time to learn when I don't know how to do something, and I work with like-minded people.

When Geforce3 came out it didn't have much of a clock speed increase

Not over the GF2 Ultra series, but it was a pretty big jump from the MX and GTS cards most people had. In addition to the HUGE FPS jump in games like Quake III, it had all those eye-candy programmable things that are going into things like Aquanox and The New Doom (tm). Also, the memory increase to 64 then 128 megs of DDR graphics RAM allows for insanely better Anti-Aliasing at "normal" gaming resolutions like 1024x768. The NV25 core (GF4 Ti series) increases this further, where you can turn on full-scene anti-aliasing and still get killer performance in your old games.

I only play Quake 3 and RTCWolfenstein on a regular basis, but my GF2 GTS (on an Athlon XP 1600+) pushes a masochistic 0.3 FPS in Quake 3 demos with 4xFSAA. Testing with the new card (128 megs of 600MHz graphics RAM, I never could have imagined in 1999) shows that I'll turn on 8 way Aniso, 4xFSAA and STILL gank 60fps on my 1024x768 LCD. Starting at $199, which is my limit for a graphics card.

And trust me, there is a TON of difference in visual quality with 4xFSAA on using a 15" LCD.

So yes, the programmable pixel shading pales against the power of prettier pictures in your "old stand-by" games, like Q3A. (Alliteration is your friend.)
