What happens when next year no one is importing goods from China or Labor from Mexico or doctors from India? Do you think they have strong enough economies to support that level of unemployment? If I stopped doing tech work and went back to the farm I was raised on that Mexican has to go home, think he'll have luck getting any kind of a decent job there? I grew up with a Fry's nearby. we had cirtuc city's, best buy's and other smaller electronic stores around.

I have been buying components, A/V gear and about everything else any of these stores sells for well over a decade and this is my take (as a tech junkie) on why CC is going under.

They sell about the same stuff most other consumer electronic stores. They advertise in every paper, radio and TV spot they can get.

The very first time I ventured into a CC I was with my grandmother and we were greeted by a man twice my age with half my knowledge ( I was about 11 my Grandmother was 70ish). We were looking for a gift for my uncle ( he is mentally handicapped, epileptic seizure prone and diabetic to boot [I made a point to mention the seizures to the salesman]) and he led her straight away to the latest and greatest 3D0 consoles and told her some BS about them not having flashing lights. I let them talk while I tried some game out then when he walked off I filled her in on just what a risk that could be ( the poor guy goes into meltdown if you flicker a light switch 5 or 6 times ) and told her maybe a CD player would be more appropriate ( he loves Niel Diamond ). needless to say we walked out with a 10 dollar walkman.

The -only- other time I have considered going to CC was when they advertised a TV for some insane holiday deal and of course I was told they no longer had that model but the comparable model from Sony was just 3 times the price. For contrast Fry's will run a special each week and even if you go in the day before it was over there was still a pallet or two left.

CC can not compete for so many reasons it is almost laughable. The one huge thing I noticed in their last few years though is this. They price everything like a clothing store. Mark it all up 150-200% of market value and each week run numerous sales on the items they want to sell.

And (shoot me grammar cops) well, tech buyers are not the same as someone looking for flattering pants, we will look for deals but we also know the exact model and price point we want and generally will not settle for something else unless there is a knowledgeable salesman there to point out something we missed.

I can't disagree with that totally but there is one point with which I have to take exception.

School systems are one of the most budget limited govt run orgs. They try everything to shave dollars, like fees for art supplies, to hot lunches paid for by PTO fund raisers. I find it hard to believe the schools would somehow be so blind as to over look an easy "tens of millions" if the case was clear cut.

I while back i posted about an experience I had with a government office, This office was a school and I am here to tell you, while it is true some schools and some teachers are under budgeted. Many only appear so on paper and in fact hemorrhage money.

The real issue I see is the same that occurs in every other aspect of Linux/FOSS adoption. The community, and companies we form around, are behind the curve so to speak. Microsoft was aggressive in there early years and has used there size to push everyone around. From patents to legislation all the way down to your local school district. We wont win this fight by beating there prices just like they can't compete with ours. We have to continually innovate, provide support and help our neighbors adopt FOSS (assimilate those who refuse).

If you want to win schools over you gotta start with yours, get involved with the PTA's and let your Superintendents know they can save money, turn out classes full of seniors with desirable tech skills, and all the other goodies that go with it, and make sure they know how that will play out when it comes time to vote!

Sir. I am not sure where you live but here in America we have seen countless changes made by various government agencies just so they can grab more tax money for there already inflated budgets.

Allow me to weave a tale for my fellow readers. My very first job was in a paper and printing supply warehouse. Things were great. I worked there for about 6 months before I got a rather strange call. It was a customer of ours who placed regular orders for pens and toner and the like. She said she was going to be placing a year end order and would like to know what our current prices on commodity items were. I gave her the run down for copy paper her normal toner carts and some other odds and ends. She said okay and a few minutes later I had a PO in the fax machine.

Now there normal purchases were anywhere from 5-50 dollars. She sent me a PO for 10000 dollars even. The top of the list was her standard set of supplies there was then a note to fill the rest of the 10000 bucks on copy paper.

Now being young and trying to do a good service i called her back to make sure there had not been a mistake. She told me no, that is correct. "We need to spend the rest of our budget or they will not give us as much next year".

Yes, the current system might have holes but I for one am all for keeping business private and reducing the size of MY current government
