Apple's philosophy forces people like me to buy new hardware to stay up-to-date (since 10.6, 10.7 won't run on my too-slow Mac).

Or you can install a Linux distro on said machine. (Not agreeing with Apple's philosophy here; just stating a fact.)

I'm fine with remakes, as long as they have something new in them. It can be anything ranging from a new area to a new character or a new class. And no, graphics aren't something new to me. I expect the remake to sport new graphics, unlike Tales of Phantasia's remake on the GBA (which looked worse than the SNES version).

Well, we could always have memory right on the motherboard, à la Sideport. Of course, more memory, such as 512 MB of GDDR5, would be better than today's Sideport memory's specifications (which is 1333 MHz DDR3, I think). But anyway, comparing HD 6xxx integrated GPUs to their non-integrated counterparts, I find the memory bandwidth not to be so bad.

Any sub €60 graphics card I can buy comes with, at best, 1333-1400 MHz DDR3 memory anyway...

Dammit, how senile of me — I keep forgetting the obvious. I conducted those tests under Windows Seven. I tried Mozilla's hardware acceleration test once under Ubuntu, but I can't remember what the result was.

    Let's run that webGL test now... (Screen resolution is 1680 x 1050, if that matters.) Firefox - 50: ~38 FPS - 100: ~37 FPS - 250: 28 - 34 FPS FPS - 500: ~26 FPS - 1000: ~18 FPS Chrome - 50: 47 - 60 FPS - 100: 43 - 60 FPS (almost always 60, sometimes dips to 43) - 250: ~57 FPS (weird, I know) - 500: 44 FPS - 1000: 35FPS

All graphical options were on. I initially wanted to run the above tests with my CPU at 1 GHz, but since Chrome will automatically bump up my CPU clock, I had to set my CPU to maximum performance mode with Firefox for the results to be fair. Raising my GPU clocks yielded no gains at all.

There's no HTML5 hardware acceleration either. At least not on my machine (Athlon X2 5600+, nVidia 8800GTS 640), which stutters in every HTML5 speed tests I've run under Chrome. Firefox, on the other hand, runs those tests just fine.

    How very underwhelming.

I once saw a TV report about that practice. The prisoners basically had to work, unless they wanted to eat stuff that tastes like shit. They didn't earn much, but it was enough to make their stay comfortable enough.

If prisons can be profitable businesses, why not? And that way, the former prisoners can at least say they've been working during the x previous years they've just spent in prison. Maybe it's slave labor, but it's still better than having them scratch their backs while free citizens keep on paying for their trip in the carceral universe.
