I couldn't think of *any* job more enjoyable than giving away billions of dollars to causes *I* considered worthy (provided I still spent an hour or two each day coding free software:) ).
It would be awesome to have billg hacking Linux kernel! He's a smart guy, and I am sure he would add a lot:)
What's interesting is that this well-known "Wife 1.0" piece was obviously written by a programmer, while Salon's author apparently has never written any C code:)
This is true to some extent, but... Suppose I am not a "self-taught pioneer," but I think I am capable of learning and then coding (sys.administration, testing, whatever). I have two paths - learn everything by trial and error (though I am not sure how I would do it for some expensive software packages - e.g. Oracle) or go read some books/take classes and then go work. While the former one seems "purer," and such experience would be more valuable, it will require much more time and effort than the latter. If you measure from the moment of 0 knowledge, the second person will be able to move to a decent-level job faster than the former. (Sidenote - I myself learned most stuff by trial and error, taking only a couple of CS classes at school and working as a part-time coder all along)
Unfortunate?! $150M?!?! That's a lot of cash, man - Caldera just got another $30M in funding and was very happy about it. This one is five time as much and they don't need to give up equity in return.
What's the current state of wireless Internet? How soon will I be able to have a small monitor/keyboard/trackball in my car so that I could listen to mp3 radio and check out the latest news in traffic? How much does it currently cost/what's the bandwidth? How fast is this changing?
Once this technology gets wide acceptance, all these "pirate" problems will become obsolete...
Dude, don't be paraniod - this has nothing to do with nanny governments (as much as I hate them); this option is not required, but it's nice to have it to avoid traffic. Cool hack, anyway, and yet another proof that security by obscurity doesn't work.
OK, this all seemed very strange, but I still had doubts that a mentally healthy professor of a respected university would spread hoax. But this was just too much. Quote: Apple has developed a patch, but it must be applied by OS-9 Macintosh owners before New Years Eve to be effective.
I guess someone has somehow acquired access to this guy's webpage and put all the BS there (like Mahir:)
Yeah, I actually thought so too. The poster should've waited for a more appropriate discussion, though - "Saving/." topic comes up pretty regularly:) Well, I hope he will re-post it at due time and it will get moderated up rather than into the ground:)
Unfortunately, shorting it would be impossible. At least my broker (Datek) does not let me short VA, Red Hat, etc. - "security is non-marginable" (and, therefore, can't be sold short). I think it is the same with other brokers, at least right after the IPO. This is one of the reasons why VA is still around $200 - people can not go short on it. Once they can, it will go down to more reasonable levels (although I've been saying that about Amazon all way long:)
One guy, working for a pretty big software corporation, told me the reason why all these stupid patents exist (it was before all these amazon-b&n, priceline-expedia, etc. wars started). Basically, companies used to file them as defensive weapons, pretty much like nukes in the cold war. Everybody realized that most of those patents were idiotic, and nobody was going to start patent wars. But they made it clear that if someone started to sue them for patent infringement, they would couter-sue for some other patent, so it would be a lose-lose situation.
Looks like the new guys don't completely understand such a system. Too bad...
Zhirinovsky is one of the coolest politicians, and I am pretty sure he is one of the smartest ones too (just to mention, he probably used to work for KGB and speaks several languages). The guy has absolutely no beliefs (for example, along with all his anti-semitic remarks, he is half-jewish himself (which is relatively well-known in Russia), and also once said that jews were the smartest nation). For him politics is pure business, and that's the only reason why he is there. He does sell places in his party (i.e., through that, in the Russian parliament). To maintain his 7-8% rating he uses various time-proven techniques - anti-americanism, anti-semitism, and so on. There is absolutely no chance he can become hitler or stalin (there was a chance several years ago, but not anymore), there is no chance for him to become the president, and he is very well aware of that.
By the way, when he does not make all those crazy statements, he actually works in the Duma, and the most amazing thing is that while what he says there is said to be stupid, eventually the government does exactly that - for example, some time ago he was the only one to say that Chechnya should be bombed, and now it is (it's not that I'm saying it's good, but he is more shrewd than other russian politicians).
To put it shortly - I am a big fan of this guy as long as he doesn't get more than 10% of the votes, and since it's not going to happen, I'm glad he is in the new Duma. He is probably the only one there who, at least sometimes, says absolutely whatever he wants!!
By the way, he recently released a CD with his songs. Unfortunately, I don't know of a link on the Web, but if you live in New York, go to Brighton Beach and you'll be able to buy it:)

The best part of this movie (for me:) is that I got to see it for free - they actually shot it at Oracle, where I work, and now they let us watch it.
Those bluish glassy round buildings (factory where he was build) are not great computer graphics, they are cool architecture! I sit in them (and, according to the movie, make robots) every day:)
This article was a very valuable contribution to the ongoing Slashdot debate about prohibiting Anonymous Posting. Just several quotes from the doc (well, slightly modified):
Throughout the history of this website Anonymous Cowards have made a rich contribution to political discource

You see, it was not a big problem for those who wanted to distribute propaganda (and, more often, just "antisocialist" prose) - all you needed to do was to replace the heads (I don't know what they're called, but if you've seen a typewriter you know what I'm talking about) on the typewriter, that's it.
Yeah, I know, but it is still A LOT - the same article says that shockwave.com just got $44M in funding, so I would assume that's about 30% of the company or so... Even if it's 100%, that's still a lot!
OK, next they will prohibit people from securing their systems (cuz how will they otherwise get in?), then they will like it and will require every application/OS/computer/whatever sold in Australia to just have a special password for the gov't (hey, why spend taxpayers' money on cracking when you can just force people...). How cool! Big brother is watching...
And am I just terribly ignorant, or is it right that Australia doesn't really have direct enemies and therefore doesn't really need such extraordinary powers?.. I know, they are VERY scared of Fiji people.....
You're saying all the right things, but, please, no organizations! Try to think of a way to do that without rigid organizations of any sort (of course, our beloved Linux is a great example).
We do NOT need an organized voice of truth, because if this voice wins (against whom, by the way?), and becomes the dominant force, it will be the same again, just with different people on top. Once you organize something, it will become crap IMMEDIATELY
Valid point. Maybe when they reference a story from some "standard" source (salon, cnnfn, cnet, etc.) they should mark it as such somewhere, and give us the ability to turn some of those sources off...

Hey, Bill, give it a try - why not?!

I'm not exactly sure what teletext is, but I do know that all (or almost all) TVs in the US have "CC" - closed caption. How's that different?

You're right, HE.net is good (of course, you never know what will happen if something goes wrong). My site's also hosted there...
What's wrong with "web hype-monkeys" ?!?!
There is a nice site called Prarielaw. Check it out - it discusses various laws in plain English.

How is LINX more generic than LNUX ?!
