The only way to "protect" our kids is to educate them on the real dangers. Waiting until they are 18 so they can be allowed to access the web as they want to is a mistake. Filtering of the internet, other than porn sites, at school is also a mistake. Let them surf away, but put consequences in place when they mess up.

Some 80 year old congress critter, who's never used a computer for more than surfing porn and ordering interns, doesn't know what the dangers out there are. My daughter probably knows more about where not to go than they ever will.

First system I learned to use was an IBM 360. It resided in my father's office (Data Programmer) and I remember keypunching my first program in basic on this machine. Playing music via paper tape on the rollers and of course we have tons of formfeed printouts... Still. The family always had a ton of confetti whenever we needed it. My Mom hated that. I went with my father for training on a weekend to IBM in Vermont to learn how to use the incredible IBM 370 series (It had a SCREEN!!!). Still used the keypunch cards as well though.

In 8th grade I worked on a Burroughs A10 machine. First time I had ever used a computer in an interactive manner. I could SEE the lines of code I was typing.

Teletypes were all over and I got a lot of time out of classes to fix those in the building.

In 9th grade the school I was in bought me (well, it was supposed to be a department purchase but I KNOW it was mine) a TRS 80 Model II with a 32kb expansion module 8 inch disks and a tape recorder. I found a way to alter the ROM on this machine about 3 weeks after they gave it to me. Always fun to remember the times I crashed that machine and had to go "fix" it during Social Studies class. Basically we had a faculty advisor and there were 4 of us that lived in the computer room. They had a collection of the 8kb machines in the room as well. For the Other People that used the lab to use.

I took a break to earn college money from Uncle Sam and when I returned to the world I bought myself a Zenith Z159 computer. Cutting Edge... State of the art.... 4044 chip with an 8088 daughtercard. DUAL 5.25 inch disks. Amber monitor (much better than the green ones). This little baby only cost me 3800 dollars (US). eventually I got a 1200 baud modem so I could program for college from home. It allowed me to connect to the Data General system our college had. Boy did I ever play a LOT of Rogue http://www.wichman.org/roguehistory.html back then.

This trip down memory lane goes on.. maybe I'll save it for my book.

Well look at that. We're not alone in the world after all.

Nope... Not alone at all. We jumped through hoops on TWO issues with GX270's.

We got a series of 40 of the GX270's in a small form factor design and after about 6 months of use began to see Hard Drive Failures (Maxtor units). Dell immediately began replaceing hard drives for us by sending them to me to put in the defunct machines. After I finished replacing a total of 40 hard drives (was a lot of 40 units we had originally purchased) we started seeing Thermal Errors and no video problems. I contacted Dell and informed them of the problem and that I had 6 of the machines whose hard drives ate themselves with motherboards gone now. I'm assuming the heat that the drive created is what cooked my motherboards off early.

I began taking pictures of the exploded caps about January of this year and sending them in with parts requests. at this point I have personally replaced about 20 motherboards all on the gx270 sff case that we had. Last week I started loosing GX270 desktop units in high use areas with the same problems. Difference here is we purchased 150 of these models. I've got the powers that be in my organization attempting to get Dell to replace these defective units and fulfill the warranty on them. I'm not looking forward to the slow death of 150 machines over the next 333 days (lentgh of time left in my coverage).

Our network is both Mac and Dell at this point. About 1200 machines total and split pretty evenly. I'm guessing if we see this problem with Apple that I might just scrap the whole network and go home. Magy

Easy fix to this in win 2k and xp.

Install Firefox. Install all of your plugins, themes, decorations, bangles, tools.

Copy the Mozilla folder from your home folder application data. Application data is a hidden folder. a little digging will find it though.

    On new machine install firefox.
Copy folder to the same place on new machine.

    Presto. Nothing lost.

Can be used to create a custom look for your firefox across the network if you'd like. Force a backup of the folder for each user and their prefs all stay after a crash. Put the files on a USB key and carry your firefox with you. Thunderbird too.

    Works for me.

A few other things to consider to increase ROI

Municipal electricity and water/sewer can be monitored over the fiber lines to each home. Muni cable and phone as well as internet access under one bill. If TV/cable and internet is $40 per month then tack on another $20 for phone calls and 3cents per minute for long distance and this can become a money maker very quickly.

The Muni can then set up with a local bell to provide multiple t's for voice as well as data. Make sure there is a load balancer on the t's for internet access and see if you can get multiple ISP's to support this venture.

An investment of another mil or so can give you a video on demand system that works over the fiber as well. Why just one pair of fiber to a home? The glass is cheap. Do the runs one time and drop extra to each home.

Whatever your town decides just don't do this half-a$$ed
