Okay, chuckles. Lets go over this so even you can understand. In the Catskill Mountains, there's a big lake. Huge. Very hard to miss. It's got a sign above it. (In several places, actually.) This supplies the water of NYC. It's no secret.

Now, lets say you can go through a few dozen feet of rock. Okay? After you've gone through that, you can go through another dozen feet of cement. THEN you'll have made a teensy hole. What, you think this is a 3" pipe, like in your wall?

So. You're going through nearly 100' of solid rocky stuff. With what, dear eliza? A focused nuclear blast? A big drill? Lots of o's in the word stupid? Go ahead, you're the evil mastermind. Why not turn on your tap, and try to drink the cities water supply? Think how many people you could kill if you drank it all!

Also, on the DEP site is the plan for what to do if both tunnels ever catastrophically failed. It includes desalinazation, as well as a large lake in the middle of central park, and the water table for Long Island being sucked dry. ;p

But thanks for trying to feel superior. You're not. You're actually pretty dull. Have a nice day! You've been flamed!

I kid you not. T&A (Don't mock the name!) travel centers sell low end laptops to truckers, and they also sell these internet access cards that allow them to check their e-mail and to basic web stuff at any of the other T&A truck stops. The card includes minutes, both for the internet access, and the cost of making the phone call from the truck stop, but the laptops they sell on the side, and I've seen them being sold from $100-$250.

They're really the greatest places - you can also buy TV's that'll fit in your truck, portable fridges, and tv dinners in cardboard boxes that'll heat themselves up! (Sterno included.) Every time I'm driving cross country it's the only place I stop, and you know when you're getting close, because they advertise on CB channel 19. (Which isn't exactly legal, but hell, nobody cares, and truckers love 'em.)

Oh yeah. They also have mechanics on duty, showers, 24 hour decent resturants, and all the jolt you could want.

  7. Not *everything* is the fault of the MPAA. on Fox Explains Why SSSCA Is Bad · · Score: 4, Insightful

Take from the article, for instance:

Despite being illegal, payola is rife, keeping interesting artists off the air in favor of the manufactured hitmaker of the week.

Okay, assume that statement is fully true, and major labels pay radio stations big bucks to play their manufactured hitmaker of the week. This is keeping the interesting artists off the air?

    Wrong.

Somebody listens to it. Someone buys the albums. N'Sync didn't get big because of major label payola, they got big because some clown looked at a shelf in a record store, and said, 'I want THIS one!'

The same with Hanson, Britney, 98, blah-de-freakin'-blah. Someone's listening to this crap. And you know what? It's trendy to call it crap. But when a radio station, that makes money off ad revenue, has to choose what to play, it's either going to choose the mainstream 'crap', or the indie 'interesting' stuff. The rest of what will happen is left as an exercise for the reader.

Other things pointed out in the article are just plain criminal, however:

Record companies regularly deduct 15 percent off the top of sales as an allowance for "breakage" -- a survival from the days of shellac records that now simply serves to reduce artist royalties by that amount

    and

And now, record companies -- who have allied themselves with the just-as-bad motion picture industry - want to make it a felony for you to own a computer that is capable of copying music from a CD to your portable player without paying them money, even though courts have held that such copying is entirely legal.

Blame the MPAA for a lot - the DMCA, copy protected CD's, starving artists that sell more than 50,000 records, but not for the bad taste of the little girl down the block.

  8. Huzzah for common sense. on Anti-anti-cd-copying Legislation? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm sure you've heard all the arguements before.

If it breaks the redbook standard, it's not a music CD. IMHO, it has no right being at my local Tower Records, since the number of cd players that can't recognize it is... well... it's a big number.

But shouldn't it bother you when one senator, who actually wants to uphold 'fair use' gets a wired article? That since the introduction of copy protected CD's, this is the first time this has come up in Congress?

    From the article:

Boucher's complaints are twofold: Americans may not know they're buying crippled discs, and that the new discs don't work on all players.

Don't the discs as they are currently have a sticker that says they won't play in your PC? But thank god he got the second part right. The only problem is that the RIAA can tell him to stuff it. They can call it a new generation of audio technology - after all, my LP doesn't play in my CD player. Neither does the copy protected disc.

Not only that, but we're not thinking long term - even if copy protection gets taken off standard CD's, what about the next generation? DVD audio discs? Or something we haven't seen yet? (Hopefully resembling those little data blocks a la star trek... ;p)

The point of this whole disjointed thought train is that the DMCA must be repealed, since it shuts down other laws, that previously exist, and even those that may yet be written. Fair use is out the window, since it states that you have the priviledge of using certain recordings in certain ways, but the RIAA isn't required to make it technically possible for you to do so. Therein lies the problem. And when HDTV finally rolls around, even though it'll be possible to build a TiVo with enough storage space to support it, it'll still be illegal, thanks to the DMCA, fair use won't apply.

So, this Congressman Rick is going about things all wrong - he needs to start by repealing the DMCA. Feel free to write him. =)

(Yes, I know the article states that he would like to rewrite the DMCA. But it's badly flawed in its current incarnation, and should be repealed, and a new, non-insane law should be drafted.

    1) You don't give a damn or care how the mod system is supposed to work, nor care about the fact that you're showing your general opinion to be worthless. After all, who in their right mind would care what an obvious asshole thinks?

I worked 60 hours a week, and started and finished college while doing it. If you get your courseload down right, and study only as much as you need to study to get the grade you want, you can finish college in only 20 hours a week, including classes, in five years. If you work FOR the college, it's nearly free. If you don't, then go to a less expensive school.

So, 60+20 = 80. Yeah, a degree lets me do things like that.

80/7 = ~12. So if you can work 12 hours a day for several years straight with no days off, you too can earn your degree.
