A prediction for the future, based on my experience with welfare programs in the United States of America:

India will decide to put the money into a welfare program.

Poor (and lazy) Indian girls make sure to get pregnant at the proper early age to ensure full benefits from the welfare program.

Then the Indian women will spend it all on fake fingernails and ridiculous-looking weaves while their children live on "Kraft dinner" and Kool-Aid.

They will then raise several generations of mindless, obese, unmotivated parasites who can't be bothered to get up from in front of the television long enough to kill the cockroaches that run across every surface in their government-provided housing.

And if you ask them, they will tell you it is "all whitey's fault".

My creds: father of a 9 year old. She has a desktop XP machine and a laptop with Debian/LXDE

She is quite comfortable with both of them, and has no problem swapping out parts in the desktop machine.

Disclaimer: The only reason she has a Wintendo is for The Sims 2 Pets.

How do you get a kid to this level?

Try for a machine that is old enough to NOT have everything onboard.

The kiddo can help you install all the cards and memory, screw the case together "all by their self" and plug in/power on the machine. Then you can run them through a basic install of either Linux or XP, depending on if they want to play Wal-Mart videogames or not.

  23. Re:Universal Installer on Ask Slashdot: How Would You Fix the Linux Desktop? · · Score: 1

The convenience of Windows installs is called "included libraries".

You get a bunch of dll ocx type stuff which the program relies on, which are typically not regularly patched or updated. This means that each program can have exploitable problems with the libraries and you can do nothing about it unless the vendor releases a specific patch.

With Linux, installing one package, even from the repos, often requires that several or dozens of other "shared" libraries (used by multiple programs) be installed.

The downside of this is the potential for "dependency hell".

The upside of the Linux method of program installation is the ability to patch the libraries of multiple programs at once via library updates from the repos.

You can either have Windows's big pile of virus-ridden easy-install fail, or Linux's (most distros) plate of repo-installed shared win along with numerous options for changing things to more closely align with your needs.

If you want "everything for nothing right now" thenl I got news for you buddy: everybody wants that.

Only a great fool actually expects to get it.

Linux FTW if you are willing to RTFM occasionally.

Windows only for games or because docx doesn't render well in LibreOffice. OMG PONIES!!1
