    The fact that there are 4874032987437 distros is does not weaken Linux, it has a strengthening effect.

    Is virtualization a possibility?

    Why not go to 3 machines, 2 of which run vmware client and one which runs vmware server?

    Then the hardware is unimportant.

    The functionality in Gnome is good, the underlying subsystem and supporting apps (add/remove programs, pulseaudio, etc) have been gradually improving.

    Fancy widgets are no match for solid functionality.

    Forward them to a page listings current feeds, possibly with custom tailored advertisement-style links to events or other websites in your network.

    Yep, definitely a slippery slope... especially if the porn models use a good lube. :)

    Seriously, though, a combination of Firefox with Adblock Plus, OpenDNS, and keeping the computer in a public space (living room or den, most likely) will knock out 99 percent of what you don't want kids to see.
