lhl.linuxgames.com is a great site for running Half Life and CS under wine. CS currently runs fine, however valve is moving to a new distribution method: steam which I have not been able to get to work with wine or wineX. Hence my post.
I know CS works, I play it most days. I was asking about CS 1.4, which uses steam valve's new content delivery system. Wine CVS and WineX CVS fail to install steam, much less make it work.
Also, even if the above worked perfectly, there is no way to transmit voice from linux, only listen.
With a full duplex sound card this works as well with latest wineX cvs. I use SB Live.
My own exp has shown that games will run slower under wine and wineX. However linux lets u improve the speed with more tweaks then windows does, for example my home system has lots of ram 640 mb, but uses a Matrox G400 which is not a great 3d card. By caching files in RAM(tmpfs) I was able to impove load times, connect times, and fps (since the hdd does not support dma disk access still requires lots of CPU cycles). I also use a customized X session (no wm, etc) and close my other X sessions to milk all the fps I can get.
In conclusion unless the games you want have native linux ports or our old enough to run well on your system nativly, you will want to keep a windows bax around. That being said, I have benchmarked Q3 on windows and linux using the latest NVidia drivers and linux (without any tweaking) won by about 7 fps (1040x768x32bit color).
Does anyone know if wineX will support CS 1.4/steam? I have tested the latested wineX cvs and latest wine cvs and can not get it to work.CS is the most popular online fps and it would suck if linux could no longer support it.
This latest 'unbreakable encryption' and 'generated one type pad' crap is the same as all the rest. Please don't try to defend it. I predict it will be featured in the 'Snake Oil' segment of Bruce Schniers (sic?) next monthly mailing.
I agree that this scheme is bunk. I am however interested in the theory behind one time pas systems. I am not defending the claim. I am asking if in theory one time pad systems are acurate. I posit in theory they are.
As long as a program is producing the keys, they will exist in a particular sequence. All you need to do is figure out at which point in the random sequence you are, and then you can generate the rest of the sequence easily, allowing you to eavedrop on the conversation.
You are making an assumtion that I am not sure are valid. If the sequence is truely random, simply by veiwing a subset of the sequence how can you tell where you are?
For example lets say my friend and I are comunicating using a true one time pad. Now lets say part way through the conversation you walk up. If I tell you what charectors I have used for the last five charectors, are you any closer to breaking the rest of the conversation? I posit no.
I have been working my way through Applied Cryptography, in it he makes it clear if the pad ever repeats the system will be broken.
Now this system randomly generates an equation to generate the pad. Ignoring the question about the true randomness of this pad; wouldn't this system repeat equations every once and a while? If it does won't the plaintext then be vulnerable?
Funny you should ask that. I have 6 CDs in one of my boxes, there are a linux arcive sold in 1995. Including redhat 1/2, old slackware, and the full sunsite arcives. I will bring it with me to the dorms if ya want.
Nautils is in Debian's unstable tree. So is GNOME 1.4. I am running both and like them a lot. apt-get install nautilis and it works. Damm slick.
As others have said if you are not using potato stay away from the ximian packages, except for evo snapshots they will fuck up your system. In any case the newest stuff is in unstable anyway.
This plan runs counter the philosphy of income redistribution our modern tax code is based on.
Secondly, this plan runs counter the basic Lockian (Hobbesian) concept of government. If you decide where your money goes what use is the government?
P.S. Go read Greenspans statements on the surplus. He is quite clear that we will pay off the entire debt in the next 4-6 years. Then what do we do? Does the government join the stockmarket?
When I compeated last year I was the lead programmer. We got around the variable limit in two weeks. EEPROM use it. All you had to do was read the stamp training kit.
We had all sorts of automation. All our drivers had to do was drive the bot, and tell it kinds of activities. It was lots of fun. I would advise anyone who can join a team to do so.
A little while ago I wrote for a slash based site about politics and social issues called www.wehavenoproduct.com. It was taken down due mainly to lack of interest. I liked it. Check www.slashcode.com for new slashsites.
Your asertion that corperations would be bigger without goverment intervention is flat out wrong. History has shown that most monopolies that last for any significant period of time survive on goverment subsidies. The railroads are a perfect example of this. Before the goverment subsidized railroads there were hundrads after words we had two.
Your last paragraph betrays the falicy perfectly. First you asume that in a free goverment corperations will have more power (implict in the coversation is that the power we are referring to is to restrict the rights of citizens.) Then you sugest that only a government can restrict rights
With the Slash code the date is set when the user hits BackSlash for a posting page. Before anything has been typed. Timothy prob. typed after 12:00. But hey you can date stories whenever you want he may just be playing a joke.\
Bush has put forth plans on education, taxes, social security, medicare, the military, etc. If you don't know what they are that is your own fault.
If you don't think Bush can overcome partinship you need to look at what he has done in Texas. He was endorsed by the Democrat Lt. Gov. If the republicans wold not let him do what he wanted to do. He had no problem dealing with the democrats. I am sorry to see that you think partinship is the only way. When Bush beat Ann Richards in TX, he ran on four issuse: Education, Tort reform, Taxes, Juvinile Justices. When he was elected the press was thrilled he added one more: Getting one to four done. If anything he is to focused on issuses. He does not spend enough time on his over-reaching phil.
Funny every time a person attacks Bush for his handlers they don't mention the re-inventing Al Gore group.

did you use the CS 1.4 beta???
If so how did you use any special tricks to get the installer to finish?

The netcode is from Quake II, but the base was the Quake I source code. This is a truely dated engine.
The thing is, everything will be drawn as a 3d object. Think of an OpenGL based window manager. --
We call this e17.

No the anti aliased fonts are part of gtk2. They look great.
See what you get when you claim credit for something you did not do. You loose karma ... good for /.
I am not sure exactly how it works, but I know for a fact www.gnome.org and news.gnome.org are done from cvs.
Why not email the webmasters and get all the help you need.

Nate
There is currently a project, much like Wine to implament the Linux API's on windows:
http://line.sourceforge.net
why not just use that for most of what you need.

While I am glad to see NASA braodcasting this FIRST competition will they be broadcasting nationals in a couple of weeks?
Wrong, Java can be used with any other intep. lang. look at JPython for example.
GO to cheif delphi for bbs. That is where most of the MI teams go.
