Disabling a car is a decent idea. One that should have come to reality years ago (before the police video camera and TV looking on).
One issue I have with this though. We have enough rogue cops tasering old ladies. Since the courts seems to have looked the other way I wonder how many stories we are going to get with cops using this for catching their wives boyfriends while fleeing? Too bad we cannot trust cops to use good judgement anymore.
The Wall Street Journal has been a pay site for a few years now. That is the main reason I do not use it. There is less and less reason to use pay sites. There are some sites that look like they are going to become pay sites. Again so what I will just use others. There isn't one site that I have ever visited that I would consider paying for. On the Internet there are almost always better free sites.
Excellent point. I believe the issue os sexting has made it to judicial look at at the Federal Level. This is an area that I had not thought of and should be addressed by the judges as well. It probably will end up in the Supreme Court after 10 years.
Oh yes its definitely needed there are millions of PC's attached to a mainframe that need this key.
Lenova has taken it upon themselves to delete other keys that a lot of people use. That is one of the big reasons why I would never buy a lenovo computer (that plus it is made in China and you just do not now what spyware/bugs/malware in your computer. That's worse than trusting MS to be honest.
Yes but how many fingers have been blown off by bombs?
The British are quite civilized and incidents like the above are the extreme exception to the rule. I am sure you could find an underground accident that might have severed fingers and then do a comparison.
On the US side we had someone jumping over seats to try and stop a not to bright bomber. I am sure you would find the same thing over in London without issue.
I know its a lot more difficult to monitor the TUBE as there are probably a million (or more) going at rush hour. On the other hand Brits would probably not look away like most americans Including me).
Yes Jiffy Lube. I too never got out of there for less than $80.
My favorite item was I charged it and the charge did not show up as Jiffy Lube it was some off the wall place. I called Jiffy Lube to attempt to find out what was going on and I got a story line. I informed them I will not be back. I go to the dealer and its done and at a reasonable price. ($29.95).
Of course it is but it is also "OK" to have a morbid sense of humor (ask any mortician).
Pretty much nothing is sacred now days from the Pope to the President to programmers and on and on. Political humor at times pushes the limits. For instance using Obama's race in a mocking way (like eating water mellon or whatever) to me is just downright racist. If it were used to make an honest point it would be one thing but it is becoming more and more racist as time goes on.
Yes and no. The issue is as always "sex". The law is pretty clear on that in the work place. I agree with you in principal but laws are in place that trump anything one does.
Heck why bother emailing? Just grab the master file off the tape rack and put in your coat and leave the building. Tapes are so small now days no one would know.
Yes its failed just about everywhere its been tried. The Chinese people are entirely different than anyplace else in the world. Chinese people have been for hundreds (thousands?) of years been taught that authority is "king" you do not question authority. It will be interesting to see how long it will last in China, all bets are off as I said above Chinese people are quite different than *ANYPLACE* else in the world.
They were a bank and they did pinch penny's. Another (not Y2K related) we had a machine that read the bottom of the check (MICR). The timing was incredible as you were allowed x many micro seconds before you had to tell the machine which pockets to put the check you had just read. The routine had to be extremely tight code. We had a few books open trying to come up with the shortest instructions to make the decision. We worked on this for at least a week (this was in the early 70's. It was hard but fun as you really had to do a lot of work to get the absolutely best optimized to make decisions fast. The point of this was that most code (especially the above item) had to be fast for two reasons. 1. Timing issues 2. Cost of processing.
The code that I found most baffling to debug was when the program modified itself to do different things.
I asked that any self modified code be done away with and got a blank expression from the boss. I lead him to a room that had lots of chalk board space and explained very carefully with the black boards what self modifiable code was. Then I took a piece of code that was run in daily production and stepped him through it. It took 2 hours of explaining what it was before he finally came to the conclusion its a nightmare. He went up and tried to explain it to his boss and he could not, so I was summoned into the VP's off to re-explain it. This time it took three hours and I finally got through to these people that self modifying code is BAD. About two weeks later the edict came down to identify such code and do a write up on it and they hired some consultants to get rid of the code.
I worked at a bank (in the 70's and 80's) and the banks management wanted to go online so the looked around and came up with some online banking system from out of state. This set of programs was *SO* cheap with storage that in IBM land you normally do packed decimal arithmetic and you always had a sign in the last four bits of a byte to designate positive or negative. This online banking system did not bother to have signs so each record could save maybe 15 bytes. When you multiply the number of records time 15 say 500,000 you would save 750K (bytes) on disk/tape(this is only for the master file not all the other misc files that had the same issue . Whoopy!! What they forgot was the extra instructions to add and take off sign(s) for calculations. This one is hard to guesstimate as not every program needed to do calculations and it depending on what type of machine each instruction ran on as each one was slower/faster than the proceeding/post machine. It did add extra time as one time I did the calculation and when it came down to it it was a small amount (IIRC LT 30 cpu seconds on the low end model). 30 seconds was a big deal in those days. They were still running the system 10 years later. I know that the system could not handle Y2K issues as I brought that up in code walk through and with my boss. The consensus was we work with what we have and make due. The bank I lost track of but it either was sold or went out of business (I don't know or care).
I was working (towards the end of my job there on a program that used IBM records as input. These at least had a sign (+-) but were not Y2K capable. Every one at IBM had been working on these issues for at least 5 years and the issue that came up time and again that they could put Y2K compliant numbers in the records but there were 10,000's of programs that had been written so they would have to be modified. This was not a small effort let me tell you. Would any of these cause a horrible accident or something worse? NO But people would not have been able to withdraw money from their savings account nor would they have been able to deposit either (in this case it was another banks issue). As for the IBM records the recording of them would have worked but trying to meaningful numbers no way.
In summary it really depended if the bank (or other institution) could fix the issue before say 6 months before. Any effort on the last day or week before) would have spelled trouble.
Well you did not have Bush and Cheney as head of the country did you? They are the ones that foisted DHS and TSA etc on America. They were the ones that came up with the color codes for terror alert. They fostered the idea of making everybody think that every one was a terrorist. If they had been ahead of your country you would have had the Patriot act stuffed down your throat. Essentially the two of them became the Joe McCarthy of our generation. I just wish we had someone that would have stood up to them.
IBM has done this sort of thing for years. A few years ago I challenged an IBMer on the issue. The patent (if I recall correctly) was how to handle lines of people (queuing).
IBM seems to have an internal policy of brownie points for the number of patents an employee gets. I do not know if it gets them more research or what exactly as I haven't asked.
IBM also withdraws a lot of patents when it becomes obvious that the patent is less than lets say patentable.
Well if its got a burger running around in a clown suit I guess I would agree. On the other hand if there is a lot of thought put into it and the colors are business friendly, I do not see a reason why not. If anything it would raise the visibility of the group. Which hopefully is good already.
Sphealey spoke thusley: "I suspect I will have to disappoint you then: personally I think the verdict on the outcomes of W Bush's/policies and actions/ is already in, and those outcomes were, are, and will be for the (now shortened) lifespan of the United States colossally bad. However, whether Bush was inept or was actually very ept and wily in executing those bad policies is something that will only become clear after a long time and with the release of such records as may still exist"
I will have to agree with you but will add this: Bush (and Cheney) set back the world's opinion of the US by about 100 years and possibly more. I am still having to apologize to non US types about the treatment they are getting as a result of the both of them. One person was slugged by a border person because he got out of his car. No screaming no nothing and he was roughed up. I have friends in Europe that their hostility towards America is so bad they do not talk to me anymore. The Patriot act was the most heinous bill ever enacted and we haven't seen the end of that monstrous piece of legislation yet.
My information is a bit dated and may not be pertinent to this story if so please ignore.
I had a friend who worked in the White House and employed by a third party (not political). He was told to recover some emails that had "disappeared". This goes back a bit but he involved an organization that built the drives and with a major effort they were able to recover about 20 percent of the emails.
I cannot disclose the name of the company or the individuals name (although he is retired) as I was not there to "prove" went went on. The company is a major world wide company and its disk drives are considered the best in the world (bar none).
I did not ask (Nor would I have asked) for any specifics, I worked with him a little and I will say he is not prone to exaggerate or fabricate things and he has a spotless record though out his career and I believed what he told me (in confidence). I think its fare to say I still respect my promise to him not to repeat specifics.
Also do not forget the Republicans will parade this out to hear and see what bad scientists are doing.
We are our own worst enemy.
Disabling a car is a decent idea. One that should have come to reality years ago (before the police video camera and TV looking on).

Bravo to the Brits.
So now it is not good enough to speak English you now must buy computers from a 4th rate computer company in another country?
EH if I wanted to do that I would buy a first rate computer in another country (whose sales staff probably speaks English*)
*except for Mcdonalds in Montreal.
Yes Jiffy Lube. I too never got out of there for less than $80.

And they certainly do not let them buy Dell computers either.
Anonymous coward said: You failed to take into account that stupid people are a renewable resource (and a growth market).
That is probably the reason why there are still families inter marrying and that does cause the DNA to take unexpected turns.
I have heard that seems to happen in the south more than any where else in the nation. Lead in the paint? Who knows.

Being in the IT department I can say 1 and get away with it.

Anyone who thinks Jerry Louis was funny has some lame idea what funny is.
