Wow... As soon as I heard of pr3, I instinctively went and downloaded it. I didn't really have any expectations of it (cause IMHO, the other two pr's were barely usable, at best), BUT IT ACTUALLY WORKS. And, better yet, it kicks IE5.X's ass for speed. WAY TO GO NETSCAPE!
Just think.. finally, a version of netscape to be *proud* of using.
This Toronto Star article from today reveals a bit more about the whole thing.
It turns out that the US government might have actually just pirated the code from a guy down there, and added the backdoors before selling it to the CSIS.. does this surprize ANY of you?
the reason why the USA and Isreal would be interested in it is because the CSIS database would contain info about the possible whereabouts of US Criminals in Canada, etc., etc.
They would also have access to extradition hearings and things of the sort, which I believe (IANAL) is a violation of Internation Law.
Here's another story on the topic that should be interesting for all you conspiracy theorists.
China is a threat to America's defence. Admit it. They've been "borrowing" secrets and stuff (read: neuron bomb) for a while now, and it only makes sense nowadays to befriend your enemies.
Seeing as Cuba doesn't really present the same threat today as it might have a few years ago, and seeing as the US spread so much anti-cuban propagandha and spirit throughout the world, it'd make the US look quite foolish to go to them asking for trade.
That, and as far as I know, the USA is all about exploiting countries that aren't as well off as they are (read: NAFTA).
does this mean I can start up my telemarketing scams again?!??
No, honestly though, this is a pretty dangerous precendent to be set, don't you think? Is this not basically inviting spammers to keep on spamming more and more people? I mean, this kind of harassment isn't legal in r/l, so why should it be legal on the net??
But seriously, imho, this all comes down to the american judiciary system (sorry boys, I'm a proud Canadian). This is the danger in having elected judges. To get elected, you have to have a lot of money. Where does that money come from? Industry. Who are you going to protect in the courthouse? Industry.
So isn't it just fitting that a precedent like this be set in the states? I mean, sure, I'm a Canadian, and we're under a completely different legal system, but bet your boxers that we'll have some judge up here pulling the same thing in the coming months.
It's sad, but true. Unfortunately, if Linux moves forward from 'the next big thing' to 'the big thing,' the 'dumbening' is inevitable. I mean, I'm forced to dual-boot becuase this isn't my computer, and my parents can't get the hang of typing in a login/password and then typing startx, instead of just using windows. And my parents aren't even at the low end of the computer intelligence ladder.
Windows became a success because it was so simple to use, and if linux ever wants to get to Windows status (which I don't ever want to see happen), it's almost going to *have* to look and feel like windows.
Even if the distributions keep console in the future (please don't ever get rid of console.. I'd die), the use of the command line will be overshadowed by X.
Aww... I'm just hoping that Napster dies a nice legal death so that we can get more people back looking for mp3s on IRC. Doesn't the world need a few more thousand IRC addicts?
I've got two desktops in my house, and here's how both of them "rolled over" to the new year:
Desktop 1: A 4-year-old K6-233.. It set the date to January 24, 1980.
Desktop 2: A 4-month-old celeron 700.. It set the date to December 31, 2000.
Both of these date problems were easily fixed and have managed to stay sane since they were fixed, but it's not exactly something that everyone's going to check.
does it screw the indie artist? I doubt it. I've been in one indie band or another for 5 years now, and all I can say is that anything that helps to get the music out and get the kids to the shows is a huge asset.

Here's CSIS' mandate:

It's not going to get you guys in any trouble if you did testify, and it's certainly not like someone *has* to post with their login...
But I guess then it'd be a personal decision type thing.
it's time for a new one, guys!!
I don't know what they call it in the USA, but here in Canada, it's justifiable under section 1 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Section 1 provides for 'reasonable limits' to be set on people's rights for the betterment of the 'free and democratic' society.
In this case, your right to anonymity could easily be breached to enforce copyright law.
Sorry(?)
Did Rob do the voices for warcraft? In the one part, he sounded a lot like the guy that does the intro voices for the Orc missions.
Look.. it's pretty simple
