You'd have had no different an experience if the game you tried to install required a downloaded patch to run because of compatibility issues.

I agree that the current state of DRM is horrible, way far from perfect, but I can still see why something needs to be done to stem piracy. I don't buy into the figures, or mentality, of these big companies regarding "lost sales" or massive profit losses (whatever a profit loss is... If you've not sold the unit, you've not made the profit to lose) but they do have as much right to limit your use of a product as you have to tell them to shove their product where the sun doesn't shine. I'd much prefer it if the terms weren't hidden in 800 lines of lawyer-speak, but that's not what this is about.

    Caveat Emptor, and all that.

Steam is "Validate your account once, get access to all of the games you have purchased with that account, stay offline for the rest of your life if you want." type of DRM. Nobody is stopping you from using what you've paid for. They're making sure nobody else is using it too.

Booo hisss DRM is bad, but this is probably the best of a bad lot.

If I want to be tracked permanently by a website, I'll create an account and log in. They can trace me by logging my actions while logged in. Any site which tracks me without me logging in to an account had better let me delete their tracking cookie, or they'll very quickly lose my business.

I do mean business, too. They're in the business of serving me advertisements. I'll not be looking at them if I stop visiting the site.

After sales support from Samsung's mobile division has a reputation for being lackluster. Once you've bought it, it's yours and they don't give half a monkey's, let alone a full one.

With Samsung mobile phones, it's very much Caveat Emptor. I'm waiting for the release of the Desire HD before I upgrade. At least then I know there's a huge crowd at xda-developers who can assist with any issues I have, if HTC decide to turn Samsung on me.

More's the point, why the hell isn't their a manual pump? You don't need sunlight to hand-crank a piston. Some form of centrifugal brake* will prevent exceeding the maximum pressure of the filter, and it can run indoors with a hose out to the salt water.

    * - I don't know if this is the correct term. The faster you turn the crank, a set of weighted brake shoes (or similar) move out towards a high friction surface. The faster you spin, the harder it becomes to continue. Or some such.

What I steal isn't the issue. Why I steal it isn't either. A homeless person stealing your TV is no less serious than a couple of chavs out with his mates doing the same thing. Theft is theft. If we looked after the homeless and less well off, we wouldn't have them stealing our stuff. At that point, we'd only have the opportunist and the greedy, which could well be dealt with by the methods you outlined. However, we need to care for the needy first.

If my boss says to me "We want Office 2010" I will obviously mention LibreOffice, maybe even offer to install it side by side with a trial of Office 2010 so they can be better informed of the options and make better decisions.

What I won't do is install LibreOffice, tell them they're wrong for wanting the product they wish for, then post about it on a forum to earn some nerd-cred. After all, they're paying me. I offer my advice and expertise for that, but I don't go against their wishes when a decision is made.
