  1. Re:Cartoon version - predates Powers of 10? on Java Powers of Ten · · Score: 1

That was in fact a Canadian production, sponsored by the National Film Board of Canada I believe. The piece was titled "Cosmic Zoom" I think and if I remember right it was made in the early 70's. I believe this predates the "Powers of 10" film this discussion is about. The kid in the fishing boat was actual film, and was combined with the cartoon imagery. For trivia's sake, the kid in the boat was on the Ottawa River, just behind the Canadian parliament buildings in Ottawa. I also seem to recall that the outward zoom went out past galactic clusters and superclusters.

...because these ships were theoretically sailing on the ocean and not a river or lake. Differential wave action in the ocean would tear a ship this long made out of such weak materials in half. Ocean wave action doesn't just go in one direction, it twists, lifts, pulls, etc. Even modern steel superstructures have difficulty with this when the ship is over a certain length. These ships may have existed on fresh water, but the ocean would destroy them.

Esperanto might be a good choice for a few reasons. Besides many reasons often mentioned concerning why Esperanto is useful as an international language (such as how fast and easy it is to learn), there are a few concerning technology you don't hear very often. One is that every letter is always pronounced (no silent letters), and is always pronounced the same way. This would make voice recognition software a heck of a lot easier to implement I suspect. There are also no exceptions to any grammatical rule ever, and I believe there are only 16 rules. It is also very easy to create new words using the rules that everyone immediately understands, which is a good thing considering how often new technical terms arise. It sounds to me like this would be an easier language to implement AI verbal communication in. Does anybody know if this would make a difference, or if anyone has experimented with it?

Why stop there? How about "I can't type two-handed and drink my coffee at the same time, so I'll just use the ol' splicer here to grow a third arm..." or "My skin needs to be green to match this Halloween costume, so...".

Of course, if you are going to start sprouting limbs and stuff you would need something to give you the required mass and energy to do it. The point is there are a lot of possible genetic mutations beyond just improving what we have now. X-Men might be far-fetched, but mutation is a key component in evolution. What will this do to the evolution of the human species? Will there be just one species, or will it split?

Maybe people will become as addicted to hacking their own genes to see what happens as some are to getting more tatoos after their first... Make it illegal, and you have the basis for a really warped futuristic Miami Vice story. Hard-core users keep going back to the neighborhood underground gene-splice pusher to get another inch of height, pupils like a cat, an extra finger or two, higher neuron density, bigger ****, whatever. Coming soon to a future near you...

Actually, they all will be speaking with accents. Most are variations on an english accent, I believe. They have a dialog coach, a Tolkien pronounciation specialist for names and such, and apparently some advisors on the right way to pronounce ancient elvish, dwarvish, etc. The idea is for the movie to have the exact pronounciations that Tolkien intended from his notes. Peter Jackson is a big fan of the book and he is being very thorough.
