"you could run a dating service that automatically pairs you up with people it thinks you'll find attractive...That's the only use I can come up with."
At the moment, I agree, given that this (seems) to be purely based on "what is"... but what if they take it a step further, and add the ability to analyze DNA/Genes and determine what combination of you and your spouse would create the "best" looking child (horribly superficial, but you know thousands would go for that)... also plastic surgery, where it could analyze bone structure, flesh densities, and come up with (according the Hal9000) what the best possible "reconstruction" could be...
I see no use in the former, however the latter, (with an integrated understanding of what "tools" are available)... could work wonders as far as people who have been in accidents, or "attacked" by someone/thing...
But generally I just see this is a new way of segregation, a computationally improved version of "mommy why dont I look like her on the magazine?"...
Im not sure if there is a posting of rules, or what those rules may be...(such as that the user can only use the default browser the OS comes with) but reading the blog, it doesnt specifiy what browser the Vista machine was running at the time...
And, what about browsers inside applications?... such as WinAmp, or XMP... or various pre-packaged media players (and assorted) that come with HP's, Dells, etc... yes the blame falls on Vista's (or at least 'suggested' IE) shoulders... but, i'll wait to see if this is Vista/IE Only... and Adobe/Macromedia/Flash deserves a smack aswell...
P.S. although Vista is rather sluggish/glitchy in some ways, I dont hate it (yet) atleast not on my hardware/configurations...
Not neccessarily... perhaps by the time they figure this rubbery circuitry out, they will have some sort of substrate that derives its energy from various gases in the air, or some other way of harvesting the naturally, and man-made electrical fields around the earth/home... that unto itself would be interesting enough (if/when possible) it would be like having a mood-wallpaper... for your home...
"i'll watch TV until that area of the wall turns red"
would also be able to see where the powerlines are in your walls, unto itself it could be a form of "art"...
Thats not neccissarily true... take 6 people... 3 Pro-Apple, 3 Anti-Apple... the 3 Pro-Apple people read the Pro-Apple comment and say to themselves "yeah", move along to the next comment... the 3 Anti-Apple people read the Pro-Apple comment and must protest because it goes against whatever they believe... so it seems as though the ratio is highly biased, when it might not be...
Most people are more prone to speak out against stuff they dislike than what they do like.
Ouch... 2 Minutes for a 17MB file?... even with the "if that" addition... thats still insanely long...
HP Pavilion (A6245N), Vista Home (no SP1), ASUS (something or other), Intel Q6600, 2GB DDR3, SATA (AHCI) 3GB/s - about 500ms "if that", however the dialog takes about 3 seconds to go away...
Dell Dimension (8300), XP Pro, Intel (somethign or other), Intel P4 2.6, 1.5GB DDR2, SATA (IDE) 3GB/s - about 300ms "if that", dialog doesnt even have time to show up... - about the same for (Various) Linux OS on the same box...
Something I do find about Vista that is exponentially quicker, is network transfering speeds (LAN)... XP to XP seems (oddly) limited to about 2MB/s... but Vista to Vista, or even Vista to XP... is just over 9MB/s... swapping NIC's and using the same drivers... still the same...
I would assume that you are more of a specialty shop right?... computers (or electronics) only... those 3 Linux based PC's you sold last month probably made you around $1,000... but you probably only had 4 of them... WalMart on the other hand probably ordered in 50 of them... and still only sold 3... whereas WalMart may have ordered in 200 Windows based PC's and sold 125 of them...
In the short-term? most deffinetly if they manage to do it successfully, almost everyone deals with at least 3 of those companies on a day-to-day basis... even if they arent under that name (WinAmp = AOL = TimeWarner) depending on the final terms, this could mean signifigant increases in expenses to those companies, and thereby trickling down to subsidiaries, eventually eating out of your pocket...
Theoretically if the expenses were high enough it may run some of them into bankruptcy... eventually the people will bitch enough, or other technologies and services will cheapen to balance it out... so in that aspect it may be "good"... but is it really?
1. Buy individual parts wholesale. 2. Configure parts in a myriad of configurations. 3. Market configurations to an assortment of consumers. 4. ??? 5. Profit.
Thats there game plan... you seem to be in a weird conspiracy sort of thought mode, that because they are now offering AMD's that it means 2 years from now that they are going to switch to only Linux based Systems?...
Furthermore, I dont think there is any proof that Linux runs better on an AMD, or that Windows runs better on Intel, or vice versa... as far as I am aware, the only major difference is that AMD is more geared towards brute force, "Get It Done Now, Damn Everything Else" sort of processors, and Intel is more Multi-Tasked... if any Operating System runs better on one processor better than another, thats a FAULT of the OS, not a benifit... at least with regard to AMD and Intel, not including lesser-known or specialty processors...
But thats just from my own experience really, not a scientific analysis of AMD and Intel processors...
lol... even though the population has roughly doubled since the 1970's... its still only about 2 t 3% of what it once was...
My point was, that you put it on your money, your Coats of Arms, schools, etc its your National Emblem...meaningwhile anhilating the species, doesnt matter if it was now, or 40 years ago... its been your emblem for some 200 years, just like Canda has had a relationship with the British Monarchy for about the same amount of time... but we sure as hell dont assassinate members of the Monarchy...
We dont pay the Queen anything, she is simply a Figurehead... consider her the Eagle to the US... you dont pay the Eagle anything, hell you are killing them all... but you still put the damn thing on anything you can find...
However, we do pay for whatever she needs when she is actually within our Borders, ie: "All Expenses Paid"... transportation, housing, protection, etc, etc.
I think the only real dividing difference, is that our Government (with an obvious slight bias) listens to its people as a primary consideration, not as an afterthought.
Plus, we have had 2 Minority Governments in a row... which just amplifies it.
We basically have, the Queen (and/or 'Future King') is a figurehead, and little more...
The extent of her power is basically just being able to bitch if she wants to, but we dont have to actually listen to her.
"The Canadian constitution places the Queen as head of state, and all Canadian laws and treaties must be approved by her. In reality, an appointed governor acts as her representative, and for all intents and purposes, decisions made by the Canadian parliament are never opposed. Thus, the Queen exercises virtually no political power in Canada."
We even excerised this during WW2... "Oh Britain is declaring War?... we'll wait"... sure it was only a day, but if the Queen/King had actual power over us that would have caused quite the turmoil.
"Pigs are known to be intelligent animals and have been found to be more trainable than dogs or cats. Asian pot-bellied pigs, a small type of domestic pig, have made popular house pets in the United States beginning in the latter half of the 20th century."

The Carnival is comming to town, so you change the town to suit the Carnival?
If anything (provided this is only because of the Olympics) they should be promoting it, most other countries appreciate asian horror... did Greece remove all their statues because of homophobic people?
If this is irrelivant to the Olympics... then, uh... WHAT THE FUCK?... is about as good of a response as I can muster... I suppose next they'l be burning the history books? (again)... too much violence there...
Ok well, is this a public mini-network? maybe someone else with a "bit" of knowledge who was using it got sick of it trying to update?
"why not make it for as many as you can think of?"
Maybe it did, and maybe it checks what is installed, and only adds the necessary ones for that software.
And who knows, maybe you blocked it yourself? maybe AntiVir (if its the "Security Suite") blocked itself? Perhaps a little too trigger happy with the dialogs? or maybe another Firewall that for whatever reason uses your HOSTS file? (which I dont think ive ever seen, but quite a few SpyWare scanners do)...
And as another side note, if AntiVir doesnt protect your HOSTS file, its obviously not that good, considering I think even Norton has gotten that far...
Why not? Sure the connection between client and bank wouldnt, but what about between banks? thats a hell of a lot more data being transfered back and forth... not to mention that its sort of the same concept, a bunch of peers all sharing data, some already contain the same data, some dont...
But that doesnt mean I dont agree with you, with only banks specifically though, im sure they would have re-created the banks networks to avoid this dilemma... only that by traffic analysis alone, I could easily see it failing...
True enough, but their is a fairly high risk of actually bricking machines...
what if you were in a rush to get out of the house... sure fine reboot [click]... grab yer jacket and leave...
meanwhile your computer reboots for the thousandth time, take your pick of consequences, thats enough to kill any part of your computer given enough repatitions.
Luckely as far as I know, Windows (Vista) still requires manual input before restarting, otherwise you could have like an entire office network of computers updating at midnight and rebooting every 45 seconds for 7 hours...
I agree, I highly dislike Yahoo's main/common page, although it doesnt take me any time at all to find the search input, and to anyone who uses it on a daily basis would take even less time...
However, a lot of people enjoy being bombarded by information, this also includes myself from time to time... get bored, arent really sure "Where you wanna go today"... and its the same as MSN.com or whatever other ones may be out there, especially when it comes to Office workers, they really enjoy sitting down at their computer at 8:45AM firing up their browser and seeing "Whats Happening?"...
And although Googles main page loads (negligibly) quicker, the actual search results return speed is often much quicker. (Google has actually become one of the slowest in this "speed" test) You can argue that its because Google searches a larger cache, but you can also argue (and personally I think "win") that who the hell needs 19 million results?... I think the furthest I have ever gone is like the 40 or 50th page... forget the other 3000... its not how many results it returns but the accuracy of the results...
I often find search engines like ExaLead, or IXQuick to return better results than Google, and search/service sites like Snap.com can be really handy sometimes... or MetaSearch engines that search Google AND Yahoo, among others...
Im actually quite fed-up with Google to be honest, they've gotten lazy like pretty much any corporation, less self-innovation, more "meh, we'll just buy them out"...and am desperate for a decent "main" search engine.
And why shouldnt I mention search.yahoo.com?... isnt that why your wife/grandma/lowiq friends dont know about it, because its not mentioned?
