Take Runescape for example (yes I play, let the bashing begin):
Most of its demographic is age 20 and below. Most of that age group does not have credit cards to pay membership, therefore, they release cards that you buy, that provide a month or two of membership once you input the PIN on the card.
Ironically, the game that needed this most JUST released PP Cards a couple weeks ago.
And for those saying "paying monthly for a game is stupid" Even EVE Online, with it's huge $20 fee, is the price of two to four movies per month, with more time spent entertaining you and a greater aspect of social connection.
It's all a matter of perspective.:-)
As for the YouTube issue. If you plan to go back to a site (like the Slashdot main page after reading an article), open the links in a new window or tab, that way you just have to close the win/tab and not reload the previous page.
Thing of the lag times. It's 20 minutes between here and Mars- the nearest planet! Instant messaging would be a long process (and not so "instant"). And forget your MMOs!
Where's FTLC when you need it? (for those who don't know, that's Faster Than Light Communication)
I'm going into 12th grade, so I'll inject my opinion and help:
First off, to everyone else- the zillions of comments are helpful to me as well.
Now, I started with a 5th grade teacher who taught us HTML, so I got lucky in that sense, and all the adults around me are computer nerds (my godfather works for LSI). I got into computers early, and now I'm trying to learn to program.
I started with the "Teach Yourself in 24 Hours" books (I tried both Visual Basic and C). No. They are dull and cannot capture attention. Few books are useful for me, the "C++ for Dummies" I'm trying now isn't too bad, but it is hard to get motivated learning from a dull book for teens (even those of us who like to read).
Long have I wished for SOMEONE to teach me, not someTHING. Now, if you find a good book, that's one thing, but it's also very rare. So I recomend teaching him one-on-one. Even if you teach out of a book, you can make it more interesting, and you can change the book's teaching to fit his likes and styles.
The point is, the best way for today's teens to learn something abstract like languages is from another person. Everybody learns differently, and a book cannot compensate. Nor can it answer specific questions ("so, what does this '#include' thing actually do?").
I just thought you'd like an opinion from somebody who understands the situation.
Another use would be message transfer. Who needs a radio on the battlefield when your commander can beam orders into your head? (Just hope he/she has it turned down).
Didn't the IAU just "figure out" the definitions of stars and planets? Are we going to have another year long line of BS talks and arguments, ending in a bad definition that rewrites every science book and generally gives everyone a headache?
I hope not...
Using the most dramatic scenario here, what happens when that one-in-a-trillion asteroid comes into contact with earth, and we have no space travel, and haven't done anything in space for five years?
Besides, how many things come out of space travel every day? All the medications that can only be made in orbit, all the discoveries that could lead to extraterrestrial human colonization.
I never went to pre-K, and I'm in the top 10 of my class. Besides, pre-K isn't what needs the money, my school district is $400k in the hole right now!
All of this while military spending increases $40k a second...
PRIORITIES PLEASE!!!
Is it that the Muslims don't understand the REASON behind the "no pictures of Muhammad" rule, or are they just trying to be difficult? They aren't supposed to have pictures, because Muhammad is not meant to be worshiped in any way, and it was believed that pictures would encourage him to be worshiped.
(As a side note, I'm not bashing Muslims, it's like that for all religions anymore.)
Oh. I stand corrected. I don't know, I never paid for EVE- couldn't get into that one!

I agree. I switched to avast from AVG, and it's so much better.

Hey! I live in Kansas, and I take offense to that!
*looks at his classmates* oh, wait... you're right!
consoles are not for us nerds.
come up with a good excuse for taking it!

Let's just make another internet and forget the stupid politicians!

I'll wait for the EPOC. It looks like it will be more useful.
Does that mean the Wii is the Anti-Christ? I can't believe I thought of that... *hits himself*
yeah, now I know why I decided not to join...

So... could someone explain this theorem in simple(r) terms, please?
