very few people need to be passing full-resolution originals around.
I wonder why all this noise. Cameras can be identified by exif info. I found that even after being reduced from 6 megapixels to the 500x350 image on fotolog.com, the image still retained the camera model, chassis number and lens number of my ex-wife's one...
but I thought lefties were disproportionally represented in the heavily artistic fields.
Not only in heavily artistic fields. Science as well.
I certainly see use for a powerhouse like that in the HPC field. Quad superscalar cores and the hundreds of vector units of the nvidia right over my desk at home would do wonders to my research.
Oh by the way about lefties, almost half my department is. I'm doing a phd in parallel computing.
Seriously, teaching is interesting, as you learn twice. And get a Ph.d.
From someone who's in this area for 20+ years and still don't know to program decently.
I don't trust a public machine at all. What I do is to plug my mac into the cybercafe's public terminal network cable, and use it instead of such crappy machines with dirty keyboards.
Then, I establish a VPN tunnel through my home computer to the world. Works fine.
Take a look at the statistics. US research is over. With the 'terrorist' precautions, us closed themselves to the outside world, and it means the best scientists are not able to go to there anymore. The great mathematicians are still in india, or in china, or going to europe, that still didn't close itself... Yet.
My advice? If you NEED to stay in the us, go to berkeley. It's cheap, it's fucking great. And you are at 150 of google, apple, yahoo, oracle, sun, etc...
If you DON'T need, well, go to europe. You can get your degree free, a good one, learn another language (which is a plus always, but especially for americans who doesn't use to have a second - or a third - or a fourth - language at school), and a NICE experience of life, which is what counts in the end.
I am doing my ph.d. on supercomputers. Linux in my field is not just a reality, its the rule. When its not linux, it is... well, solaris, sun os, and, well... mac os X.
Unix is not open source. BSD is. Unix is a property of Novell.
About the multimedia, well, windows is the king today. But the best pc you can run windows today is a mac. Be it a desktop or a notebook.
About easy upgradable computer, are you using intel chips recently? About the media and the ipods, you are wrong, completely wrong. Apple today sets the standards on this field, even on scientific research.
Oh, my country has no macs advertisement, but it is present in top research.
Oh yes, openMPI and XGrid is built-in on macs, and they work together! Tell a university system's administrator that such a system exists and then just prepare yourself to buy them... As we are doing now.
I hate to say that paulo coelho is the best selling brazilian writer. But to say that someone who sold more than 150 MILLION books is an obscure author... Well, take a look at how many red hot chili peppers sold of stadium arcadium worldwide...

Of course it is Fahrenheit, but why the hell the temperature in a real unit is not at the post's update?

I did more or less the same that you are planning to...
with a 2.0gz macbook.
Battery stands for 3 hours of full operation, 8 when saving a lot of juice.
Works wonderfully, but there's no way to clean it up! The only thing who does the job is dental floss, mind you...
