And last time i checked people were moving to downloads, instead of CDs, who wants a stack of CDs when you can just install software through downloads. Repos are not hard to use, its a lot easier to simply select a program and click install than run an exe then go through a 10 minute quiz to install the software. If you need to install a deb from a website you just download and double click it (pretty much like an exe). alien is a litle harder but as i rarely use it ( current install hasnt used it at all) thats not too much.

Surely a program called add/remove programs is simpler than using a CD.
And even if the program your looking to install is in a repo, a install program file type ( a.l.a msi ) is alot simpler to use than .exe as it give the same approach everytime.

It's one thing to hotplug an external hard drive, quite another to swap processors while running. I meant CPU hotplugable, i think it was originally developed purely for a few highend servers that allow hotplugable CPUs, but now its main application (AFAIK) is in visualization.

Most consumer applications don't max out a processor. Having a switchable processor would be worth it only in really specialized situations. As a result, no one would code the software for it. The software would simply have to be multithreaded the OS would take care of the rest, the software wouldn't need to do anything special.

I will concede that i cant think of an application for switching between modes( perhaps compiling? or gaming (old games dont multi thread well but then again old games wont max out cpu)? or if a core is known to fail at high temp (but then again you'd just throttle the cpu usage to keep it from failing) ), but if disabled cores are not disabled physically then at least if quadcores were being shipped people would be able to enable the last core.

it'd probably require a restart. Linux can be compiled to be hotplugable, if i understood correctly it means this isnt true.

people know what workload will max out their computer, and build around that I was looking for the desktop market, were one minute ill be running everyday stuff (mail + web browser, want as many slow cores as i can get so i save power),
then ill edit some pictures ( I dont know much about graphics but i think multicores are generally good for this)
then ill play some games ( some games are better at threading than others).

It also wouldn't work under Windows, because you'd have to reauthorize WGA every time you switched. true but i was looking at it from a purely technical point of view, if it became practically useful im sure windows would allow you to pay for WGA-flexy-core that gets around this.

By the way, that kind of stuff generates interest in the product by itself - people like the idea of buying a low-end product and turn it into a high-end one. Of course it's always a bit of a lottery, but it does attract people. How is the last core disabled? is it physical or firmware. It would be quite interesting if the triple core demand gets so high that they're probably shipping quad cores.

If its hackable, it would even be interesting to see how the defective cores perform. For example if i have a 2.6 tricore because the last core cant go above 2.0 ( im sure marketing would do this sort of thing ). For multithreaded stuff my computer could run in quadcore mode at a low clock rate (4*2 > 3*2.6) but when the programs running cant really multithread the last core could be switched of to allow the clock to be increased ( 2.6 > 2.0).
Is this possible or is the last core disabled physically?

p.s i dont know why i care, as my laptop runs fast enough for everyday stuff with a 1.6 single core since i got more than 256 ram(it uses a whole 390MB now). Is there a demand for this anywhere outside the server/gaming market?

As many others have said, the UK has a very serious problem with gangs of youths causing trouble, and we're not just talking a little petty crime, there have been a number of recent cases where individuals, often adults, have actually being kicked to death or stabbed by such groups. The deaths are not in public places and out side shops where these are being used so that is completly of topic. In fact if the gang had been outside a shop instead of the mans home, people would have seen the attack. Your argment is based on the fact that we have a problem with some youths (its not at all serious compaired to US), so we should punish them all. And about half a dozen times isnt often!

When people talk about the rights of children, they always think of the relatively innocent ones, the ones who are probably more like we were when we were young (and this is an image that those who are anti-Mosquito are trying to foster) but the truth of the matter is that the kids this device is being used on, have little in common with the British kids of the 80s. Defending an idea because some people deserve it is like saying because some adults are terrorists we should all be watched, it is in fact you that's attacking the liberties of the innocent! the kids of the 80s, wernt the kids of the 80s the punks that would hang around in gangs and start fights, just because you didnt go round causing trouble doesn't mean your generation is innocent!

I think the problem ultimately lies in society itself, as the rich/poor divide gets wider kids on the lower end have less and less hope. While hope cant be forced on people, something has to be done about hope! Attacking them with devices like this and stop and search just reinforces the divide. The lib-dem candidate for london mayor said "we need effective policing" (he was a police oficer for 31 years so waether or not hed be a good mayor he does know exactly what hes talking about (btw he was policing the brixton riots in 81)) not blanket police suppression, thats failed in the past and is going to fail now too.
