  4. 2001 was not "2001" too on Narrowing the Space Flight Gap · · Score: 1

When I saw "2001" a year before the moon landing it was generally thought most of that stuff was possible save for the aliens and a super-smart computer. But little of it was realized. Sniffle, sniffle.

  5. two years to revive shuttle? on Narrowing the Space Flight Gap · · Score: 1

Thats how long you have to put orders in advance for disposables like the fuel tanks.

  7. wonder when IRS or SSA will "lose" records on IT Pro Admits Stealing 8.4M Consumer Records · · Score: 2, Funny

UK beat USA in this race by having the identifications of 25 million of its residents stolen last month. Its only a matter of time for a US agency. I suspect the US is semi-protected by backward computer systems. Like who can read a nine-track tape anymore?

  11. called "freshman hypochondria" in med school on YouTube Breeding Harmful Scientific Misinformation · · Score: 1

Beginning med students and residents frequently thought they MIGHT have the diseases they were hearing about in class or seeing in the clinic. You become aware of all those little nerve endings and bumps in your belly you never really thought about before if it wasnt painful. Its part of a doctors education to learn what is normal and what is anomalous.

  12. peer-reviewed sites linked to utube on YouTube Breeding Harmful Scientific Misinformation · · Score: 1

Its the same as early WWW days. Eventually "authoritative" sites will emerge with links to utabe-like sites as video-servers. Anyone who searches the video server directly, without review, is askign for trouble.

I see more and more conference talks copied to utube, or video adendums to published scientific papers.

  14. dept of commerce code audits on How to Deal With Stolen Code? · · Score: 1

I work for a large software company with much international business. In order to get an export license our code- source and libraries- undergoes an audit to make sure there isnt any deep encryption or other prohibited stuff. The audit is like the anti-plagarism searches used at schools. It turns up lots of other things like GPL and open source.
Some our customers demand zer third party code. This utter fantasy in modern programming, especially when enough of this leaks into the commercial compiler libraries. But maximal documentation and sudit trails is something we can offer.

This company is also hoping to build a database of hundreds of thousands of humans to refine what these markers really mean. I believe you select among various privacy levels in your DNA. Teh drawback of being too private about about your DNA is you dont get future feedback from new discoveries.
