Yep. And my cable company (Time/Warner, which is also my ISP) will block all Bittorent downloads to you at no extra charge. Not slow 'em down. They block 'em.
When cable first started (back in the late 1970's, early 1980's), one of the arguments they gave for letting local communities give them a monopoly was that they were a paid-for service. Commercial free. Of course, HBO was about the only channel they had back then and they showed the same four movies a hundred times per month. But, still, it was commercial free.
We all know that those days have long passed. Now we pay $100/month and get to watch those lovely commercials too (16-18 minutes out of every 60-minute show). We also get to watch networks advertise their own shows with distracting little animations across the bottom of the screen while were trying to watch a current show. That's why I dropped my cable TV subscription four years ago (nearly five, actually). Since then, I've tried just about every Internet movie/TV service out there. Netflix is far and away the best quality and value (their customer support is second to none) and, even with this new pricing, is still a bargain compared to Hulu+ (sucks big time) and Amazon ($2.99 and up for one view).
I get access to Netflix via my computers (any on the LAN or via WiFi), my Bluray DVD player and my iPad. I use iTunes when I want to watch recently released movies (just watched Source Code last night on the iPad). At $4.99, it was a little steep, but you have up to 30 days to start watching it and, then, twenty-four hours to finish watching it. I usually find all I need with Netflix streaming only.
You might want to re-think your policy on AC postings. I certainly wouldn't be sad to see them gone. Soon. No serious slashdotter wants to have to even scroll though this type of garbage.
Casio sells a nice radio-synchronized digital watch for $38USD. Got one a couple of years ago and I love it. Automatically adjusts itself for DST. I use it to set the clocks in my house that don't automatically adjust for DST (mostly those on kitchen appliances).
Well, you can't do much about the debt if you don't have any money left over at the end of each year to pay towards the loans, right? So, lowering the deficit was an effort headed in the right direction anyway. Clinton left us with a surplus. Which Bush immediately turned around and gave back to his rich friends (err, I mean "The American People").
This is Washington in a nutshell: Democrats: Tax & Spend. Republicans: Borrow & Spend. At least the Dems are willing to withstand the public's dislike of more taxation. The Reps are a bunch of cowards who have become quite adept at robbing our grandchildren of their opportunity to live in a country where they would otherwise have been able to participate in the "American Dream."
I haven't been this anguished about our country's future since the 1970's (price freezes, gasoline rationing...). But, Americans have been scared by (the "threat" of more) terrorism. Land of the free home of the brave my ass.
You cowards will get what you deserve in the end. And, it ain't gonna be pretty. If you'll put up with full-body scanners in airports, they know you'll put up with just about anything if they can keep you scared. Wars and rumors of wars (1984 should be required reading in every high school civics class).
Are we sure these are the views of the Chinese government? Or just the journalists working for the government controlled newspaper?
Six if one. Half-dozen of another. If you are a journalist for a Chinese government-backed newspaper, it's probably not a good idea to disagree with that government's views too often or too loudly. Indeed, just the fact that they hired you means you are probably not likely to disagree with their views using their newspaper (radio/tv, etc.).
I'm just guessing here, but I think he meant "corporal punishment" (not "capital punishment"). Just sort of fits with the rest of his rather disjointed "spare-the-rod-spoil-the-child" rant. And, I'd want to see a reference (not from a parent or relative) for the "95% effective" claim. I call bullshit.

Thank you for Stylish! Made my day (week, month, year...). My vision is trashed thanks to over 30 years of staring at computer screens twelve hours a day. I can now read slashdot comfortably without horizontal scrolling! Took about two minutes to download and install the Firefox add-on and even less time to download and apply the style. Hats off. Great job!<OFFTOPIC>
They gave us something very concrete (although the Egyptians may have used something very much like it in constructing the pyramids, the Romans were the first to use it to build just about everything). All hail opus caementicium! It changed architecture forever.
Google's product is eyeballs. Who wants to buy eyeballs? Advertisers. Ergo, Google's customers are not those of us who use their Web-based applications (search, Gmail, Apps, et al.). Offering useful, alluring apps (and platforms) to users is how Google "grows its crops" or "builds its inventory" of eyeballs. The more we use their stuff, the better they get to know us and that allows them to offer something advertisers really, really want very badly: well-targeted eyeballs.
We users are Google's product. Advertisers are Google’s customers.
and a host of private attorneys representing the Twitter account holders
What other information are they after if they already have the identity of the twits (or is it twitees)? If they are represented by attorneys the court already knows who they are, right? Any tweets they posted were publicly available. What other info does Twitter have about these individuals?
...It's already there. I can watch HTML5 video in Safari just fine now using any codec I've installed including Ogg, and HTML5 is really the only way to easily watch video on iPhones. It is an open standard implemented by multiple parties and has been for quite a while.
That's right. I can watch.ogv (Ogg video) files via Firefox 3.6 and using VLC (that very good open-source, cross-platform a/v player) http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. I didn't have to install any additional codecs. It's great for watching videos from conferences and expositions (and VLC has a full scripting API for browsers that don't yet support HTML5's <video> element). Both Firefox and VLC also handle fuill-screen playback quite well now.
#2 THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, by Stieg Larsson
#3 THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, by Stieg Larsson
#4 THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST, by Stieg Larsson
You can see all three movies (Swedish w/English subtitles) on Netflix Watch Instantly (streaming). Get a one month Netflix subscription ($8 -- streaming only, no DVDs) and watch all three movies. The books are terrific and the movies are also very well done. For the best movie experience, I suggest you read the book then watch the corresponding movie. Barnes and Noble was selling the Nook e-book versions for around $5 each. Read/watch them in the order shown above (as the titles indicate, it's a trilogy). Noomi Rapace plays Lisbeth Salander (the female protagonist in the trilogy). This woman is a (male or female) geek's wet dream (her character in the movie is bi-sexual) and one damn good actress to boot. Highly recommended way to escape the "winter blahs" for a few days.
That isn't what they're doing (yet). Although the headline/summary made it sound like they were shutting out IPv4 users, this is not the case. They will be supporting both simultaneously.
You are correct. I believe it's called "running a dual stack."
If slashdotters want to test whether their present system (client, router, NAT, firewall, proxy, ISP) is IPv6-ready, go here. Its free and there s a ton of good information about the conversion "issues" and what you'll need to do to become a full IPv6 citizen.
Boorgle? Or, better yet, Boorgle+.

You don't have stop In the middle of the movie to wipe the jelly or crusted snot off the stream.

Okay, we get it. Puns are fun. But a nup's a nup!
I'd show you my Lego Brain. But, I forgot where I put it. Stupid human!
And hardly worth the effort if there's not plenty of malt vinegar on hand!
Damn! Now I'm Jonesin' for fish and chips. It's nearly midnight. Oh, well, this is off-topic anyhow. Reset!
Well, I guess we must then hope the Chinese love their children too. (ala the Russians via Sting)

It's only a near-quote, but you get the idea.

And Goggle, obviously, knows that.
I wonder why he sent a letter ... and email would have been faster :)
Reminds me of a former boss who sent our company's reply to a US Post Office RFP via UPS. Needless to say, we didn't win that contract.

That would be "tweeters." FTFY
athough it should come as no surprise, is that this guy's Slashdot member number is 101.
