    As a (student) pilot, I'm immensely interested in alternative power plants for aircraft.

    I don't mean to rain on your parade but you probably ought to know: while pilots may be interested in solar- powered aircraft, physics majors are likely to be less so.

    Somewhere with a wage-structure so suppressed that $45k will buy you a liveable house... and those of us with any sense would still rather take a bullet than live there. Places like Oklahoma comes to mind.

    Probably West Virginia. More mountainous, on average, than Colorado (it's just not sitting on top of a one-to-two-mile-thick plateau).

    The problem is the exponential increase in material required to gain any useful elevation. A massive reforestation project down at sea level, on the other hand, could have a similar effect; fission-powered desalination could supply the irrigation needs.
