PDF is a published standard much like Java. Sun published the specs on the language and JVM (not sure about the libraries) in their books with Addison-Wesley. Likewise, Adobe published the specs on PDF. How do you think Ghostscript's able to convert to PDF? How do you think OS X can let a user save a print job from any application as PDF?
the most common format of email on Microsoft's Hotmail is spam. I don't see them bitching and whinging about that. "Hypocrite, first cast the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to cast the twig out of the eye of your brother."
This is not your website. It's not their website either.
Actually, it is their website; just ask them, they'd be happy to tell you. And if they want to post the same article on the front page multiple times, well that's their right to do so. They may look like "gold medal winners at the Special Olympics(*)" doing it, but they can certainly do that. If people don't like it, they can go somewhere else. Nobody's putting a gun to anyone's head and making them read/.

Wikipedia is a website editable by anyone with an internet connection. An encyclopedia is a printed book that is sold and created by a relatively small group of people who are paid to produce it. Given enough ink pens and white-out, an encyclopedia is just as editable, but who goes to the trouble?
Everybody's making the same basic mistake here in comparing one to the other.
Not using IE is no problem. Just do what Ms. What's-her-face does and don't click on the blue E. But, there are many other applications that use the same HTML engine as IE. Aren't they just as vulnerable? HTML Help, Frontpage and Outlook are some of the most egregious examples. There are many others.
It's not that I haven't tried to secure IE and Windows. I have tried the various methods for securing out my machine via Security Zones. I ultimately had to turn things back on when my HTML Help stopped working, or I browsed to a website that just wouldn't render properly without ActiveX or scripting turned back on, and I just didn't trust it enough to add it to my Trusted Sites Zone. I have also used Group Policy Editor to enable the Classic desktop turning off Active Desktop.

- java applications are difficult to install
This is the developers problem
Sure, just tell the users to install Java. Problem solved. My ass!
- java applications start up slowly
As with any interpreted language, and has been an issue since Qbasic. Accept it.
You might accept it, but your users wont. Never worked as a developer for a living, have you?
- java applications use a lot of memory
As many applications do. 20 meg for Soundtool is ridiculous, but with a gig of ram, there is plenty left over.
Not everybody has a gig of RAM. You want to make everybody upgrade? That's so M$-ish.
- java applications leak memory
So do most other applications. If the programmer does not take heed. Again, a very broad statement having little to do with the language
Bullshit. Java's garbage collection was supposed to take care of this taking it out of the developer's hands completely.
I like the portablility of Java - something most people forget about when whining and bitching about it. Think about the other applications you use, and how they suck too. The same people that wrote windows are the same ones that have an internal disgust for Java... keep that in mind as well.
I agree, Java's a great operating system. I just wish it had a decent progamming language for it.

I don't care what language you speak normally. I only speak English; it is *my* native language. Would you want me to speak to you if you don't understand me? No? Likewise.
American arrogance? Hello kettle, this is pot; you're black. I heard the French smell bad, English food is disgusting and that you shouldn't drink the water in Mexico. I don't know for sure; I've never been to those countries. It's just what I've heard. That being said, I don't believe Americans have a monopoly on arrogant nationalism. Ours just gets more media coverage.:)
Fortunately Microsoft has been helping by shoveling new features into their Office products for many years.
The reason for that is Microsoft listened to their customers and put the features the customers wanted into Office products. If anything, they have been doing this to a fault. Apple, on the other hand, pretty much ignores their customers telling them, "It's OK. You'll like it." F/OSS developers usually create things in order to "scratch a personal itch" rather than to satisfy a customer's particular needs. If something works well for the customer, that's good. Otherwise, well, you have the source code.
Since it supports everything via plugins, one could make html editors, office applications, or even stuff like photo editing software under eclipse which would then feature a unified and interoperable user interface. I really hope to see this kind of thing soon.

under the DMCA for subverting their security? It being endorsed by the MPAA/RIAA not withstanding, it's still a violation.

ESPN to televise the World Series of Go. Then, maybe, it'll take off.
For those who haven't seen the first GITS, it airs tonight at 11PM CST on the Action channel. How's that for timing, eh?

Someone who works at osViews.com submits an article about osViews.com. Jeez, people, buy an ad!

As opposed to Bill's Absolute Terror Field. Sorry, couldn't resist the Evangelion reference.
