...but did anyone think they'd already be harassing people that are using nothing more than the bandwidth for which they are paying?
The reason that broadband cable access is so cheap is because they don't exect you to use it all of the time.
I say that cable is cheap because you can get near T1 performance (~$600/mo) from a cable line. The companies don't want you online all of the time because it costs them more money for the extra bandwidth.
Its kind of like the 56k ISPs. You can have unlimited hours of use, but they don't want you connected if you're not using it. They don't want an idle connection wasting a phone line.
Don't get me wrong though. I'm not on their side. I want to be able to run my network on a cable connection as well. We just need to compromise or something...
Do you understand what stocks are, and what an IPO is?
Do you know how to read?
No where did I say that there should be an unlimited number of stocks to buy. I said that everyone should be given the chance to buy - first come first served. Why should only a select few be able to get in on the ground floor? Everybody should be given that chance.
if EVERYBODY were allowed to participate with an IPO.
For some reason only "privilidged" people are allowed to buy the stock before it starts. So why do we allow the rich to get richer? Everybody should be able to buy those stocks before trading starts.
Sounds to me like this crowd wants the world on a silver platter.
The reason broadband is having problems is because it IS expensive. That's just the way it is right now. Broadband to residential areas is still relatively new so the prices will stay high for a while.
Think of this:
A T1 in my area costs $600 a month.
DSL is about $40
Cable is aabout $35
56k is about $14
Double the 56K to 128k the price would be about $28. Double that to 256k and we're talking about $50.
$50??? for 256k? Then why can I get cable and DSL cheaper when its faster?
The companies just can't make enough money right now to pay for the bandwidth.
2. PS2 can have 8 controllers max using a Multi-tap (not 2).
3. I'm pretty sure that they meant Dolby Digital decoding, not encoding. Because what is there to encode? Is there a line-in jack somewhere? All of the data on the disc is ENcoded, so it needs to be DEcoded when played back.
4. PS2 does NOT require a seperate remote for DVD Video.
One thing about digital technology that pisses me off is when I see or hear an advertisement like: "This product offers digital quality audio/video..."
What the hell does that mean - digital quality? It all depends on the sampling rate of the digital recording. I've heard many analog recordings that sound just as good or better than some digital recordings (although it is becoming more rare now).
I have asked many companies and consumers about the meaning of "digital quality" and no one can give me a definite answer.
Now to the actual subject. I have seen a HDTV demo and it was much cleaner overall. I especially can't wait until most programming is in 16:9. That will help tremondously. I have only seen Mitshubishi (sp?) and Pioneer models but both were stunning!
You're not too old. I'm 23 and work for a community college and I'll be getting laid off for budget reasons and.....oh wait, you wanted to START a career.
Seriously though, how well the economy is doing has a direct effect of how many beginning unix people are hired.
The problem there is that you can't get experience so how are you supposed to get a job that requires experience. It is a vicious cycle!
I say that if the RIAA tries a DoS then we should fight back with a DoS of our own. If one of us is attacked/shutdown then we should go after their equipment.
First off, the damn thing IS NOT hidden. The ability to change the associations is in EVERY SINGLE explorer window that is open. I found it in less than a minute the first time I tried to use it.
And guess what else: Its mentioned in the HELP program too! (that was a tough one, wasn't it?)
Also, the reason why its the last option is probably to deter morons from changing mp3s to opening with Notepad or Fdisk.
I can go to my local music store and pick up a tape for $9.00, but I have to pay $15.00 if I want it on a CD, why?
I can go to the video store and pick up a movie for $13.00, but I have to pay $20-35 for the DVD, why?
Its because the prices for the medium is driven by the market. Its all about supply and demand. However, the big 5 have been caught keeping prices "artificially high". So its a combination of those 2 things.
What part of "some of our civil liberties will be put on hold for a while" don't you understand? We will get our rights back. But for now be patient. We can protest later if it comes to that but for now just take it like a man.
Go ahead and mod me down. It will only show how closed-minded you are.
that most of them think they're so damn important that the government will want to spy on them.
"The fact is you had better be DAMN careful about what powers you grant the government. "
The taps are only allowed for 48 hours. So quit throwing a fit.
Actually the government has been reading our information since the beginning of the interent. So if you think this is something new that's going on I've got a bridge in Brooklyn that I'll sell to you!
I've got nothing to worry about along with 99.99999% of the population.
This is the part where I get up on my soapbox and tell everyone to quit whinning like babbies.
So the FBI and NSA can tap our emails for the next 48 hours. Who gives a rat's ass?
Think about this: In your everyday emails are you writing to people about nuclear secrets, your groups' terrorist activities, or plans to overthrow the government?
No?
Then why should you care? Do you think that the government cares that you are writting an email to a friend who you haven't seen for a while, or plans about what you're going to do for the weekend? Get realistic here!
IF YOU'RE NOT DOING ANYTHING ILLEGAL THEN YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT!!!
I don't know how to make it any clearer.
Of course, during national crises like this, we are going to have some civil liberties cut back. We need to give the government the benefit of the doubt that they know what's best for us.
Remember, we do not live in a "real" democracy. We elect REPRESENTATIVES to make the right decisions for us. If you think you can do a better job then run for office!

No exceptions.

Why are they upside-down? The chip is on the bottom of the card which makes it harder to cool. Are there any valid reasons for this?
Wouldn't the chips stay cooler if they were on the top?
I'm just thinking out loud here.
I've seen other posts that resemble this but I'm not sure if they were serious.
Why not let the people choose their own OS? The government is going to be shelling out the $$$ for this big project anyway.
I understand that the platform will be x86. So give them choices of Win98, XP, all Linux distros, BSD, Be, Solaris...
Let the taxpayers decide what they want. It shouldn't be shoved down their throats.
Besides, Microsoft isn't always evil and (I know you don't want to hear this, but...) Linux still isn't ready for the masses on the desktop.
In the article it states: "this will ammount to 3 to 4 db gain in power, which isn't all that much, but heck, it's free".
3dB will result in a signal that is 2 times as strong. So, yes, it is quite a bit more.
When refering to decibels, every 3dB means 2X the power. Just thought I would point that out.
All of the audio data on the disc used for Dolby Digital is ENCODED so the console does DECODING. Why is that so hard to understand?
1. PS2 can also use a hard drive as mass storage.

In the computer industry: yes, internet is a generic word. But in the computer industry windows is not generic.
I could list a dozen glass manufactures that use Windows in their corporate name. Like Pella for example.
It all depends in the context its used.
"Calling a windowed operating system "Windows" is like naming an automobile "Wheels.""
Well then I guess you should have bitched about this 15 years ago when they copyrighted the damn name!
Seriously guys, what is this? Bash Microsoft at any costs? You have to realize that MS isn't always bad just like Linux isn't always good.
I know that I'll get modded down for this but I don't care. Someone needs to take you people off your high pedestals.
You're not too old. I'm 23 and work for a community college and I'll be getting laid off for budget reasons and.....oh wait, you wanted to START a career.

Sounds fair to me.
...of things to bitch about.
Seriously. This is ridiculous!
First off, the damn thing IS NOT hidden. The ability to change the associations is in EVERY SINGLE explorer window that is open. I found it in less than a minute the first time I tried to use it.

I could go on, but I'll spare you this time.

Whoever modded down the comment that I'm replying to is a COMPLETE AND TOTAL JACKASS.
He was telling it like it is, but nobody wants to look at it reasonably.
oh well....
As I pointed out before - This linux & dream cast story has been on /. before. What's with all of the rehashed stories lately?!?!?
I remember reading an article on /. about this a LONG time ago. Come to think of it, there's been lots of rehashed stories on here lately. What gives?
I have the second trailer on 35mm film.
I'm thinking about selling it on Ebay. Anyone interested?
As far as I know, "Star Trek" is just a TV series and some movies. So I'm thinking that the computer that you see on Star Trek is NOT REAL.
I used to watch 'The Jetsons' all the time, but I knew that we were not going to have flying cars in my lifetime.
*sigh*
- "The problem with teenagers in that they think they know more about life then people who have already been down that road." -Morgan Freeman
I think the title speaks for itself.

I agree with you 100%.
/.
And whoever modded down your comment is an ass.
I can't believe that somebody actually took away points on this one. So much for open-minded readers on
