If there are any adult nearby who observe this behavior, then they should step-in and break-up the clique. And lecture them in detention about why they are adults (capable of reproduction, et cetera), and they should be acting like adults, not insulting their peers.
The solution is to stop raising a bunch of rude brats. The parents/teachers need to tell teenagers, "You have the body of an adult (reproduction, et cetera), and now it's time to start acting like one. Abuse of your peers will Not be tolerated." The bullying messages and phone calls are just a symptom, and treating the symptom is not going to cure the disease. You need to go directly to the source and teach teens to act with manners & that insulting other people is Not acceptable.
I too was bullied as a kid, not with internet but with verbal abuse, which led me to keep quiet so nobody noticed me. I never "escaped" that verbal abuse until I found myself in college with an adviser who refused to tolerate such behavior from his students. That's what we need today, but starting at age 13. If we can teach teens about adult behaviors like sex, then surely we can teach them manners too.
You just described me during middle and high school - although I wasn't quite that extreme. I too was extremely self-conscious and thought my classmates were watching/criticizing my every move. Although it was partly true, I eventually realized what you said: I'm not important. Nobody really cares that I just scratched my nose (for example).
Now that I'm in my 30s, I've kinda moved to the opposite extreme where I don't care what people think ("If they don't like my clothes, they can close their eyes.").
I was speaking with a Montana rancher (during a vacation) and he said he pays just $25 an acre for cattle-grazing land. He probably doesn't have power to his ranch, and even if it was offered would probably cost $100,000 to install, but he more than makes-up for that "drawback" by having cheap ground. In contrast I DO have power, but I had to pay twenty times as much for my acre as the Montanan did.
I live near a city that, in terms of population, is somewhere around 110 in terms of population (Lancaster PA), and even though I'm 10 miles from the center I still have access to 6000 kbit/s DSL.
>>>people who live too far from any hub to get DSL
How far away can asymmetric DSL service of say, 500 kbit/s reach? Answer: According to cisco.com it's approximately 10 miles, so if you live anywhere within ten miles of the switching station you should be able to get broadband DSL. The price would probably be higher than usual - but still cheaper than a satellite service - and a lot faster than dialup.
IMHO Congress should force the telephone monopolies to install DSLAMs for any customer who requests it. If the Baby Bells complain, they can be ordered to use the rural access fees to cover the costs.
>>>provide me a war scenario on which submarine warfare has more importance in getting closer to the conflict resolution than tactical ground attacks, bombing, or hurling long range missiles from one continent to another >>>
You have got to be kidding. Have you never studied WW2? Submarine attacks waged against Japan effectively cut-off the nation from access to natural resources, oil, even food. Germany did the same thing to Britain during WW1. In Britain's case the anti-sb destroyers were able to sink enough subs to save themselves, but in Japan's case they reached a point where the subs had cutoff their ability to continue waging war.
In a modern conflict between, say the EU and the U.S., submarines could have a similar affect of cutting-off the U.S. oil supply. That would effectively end the war. The U.S. needs its own submarine force to make sure that does not happen (sub-vs-sub warfare).
>>>it should not be too hard to create a drug that interrupts that feedback loop.
This is essentially what happens to women with humongous breasts (we're talking size F or larger). The area around the nipple and milk ducts is supposed to stop accumulating fat cells when the period starts, but sometimes the feedback loop does not work, and the fat cells multiple like crazy. I can easily image a similar "flaw" leading to large penises.
>>>the "Child Protective Services" would swoop in unannounced and enter our house uninvited, and interrogate our whole family, freaking out my step-son >>>
They are not allowed to do that without a search warrant. Or probable cause. And no, "We heard a report" is not probable cause. That's just hearsay, which means they need to go see a Judge and get a proper search warrant. Yes it requires more work but they are bound by Constitutional Law same as we are.
>>>that if all the rich suddenly get broke and poor, the middle class (that's me, and - I guess - you) is screwed just as well, because the complete system breaks down. >>>
Hardly. We'd have a recession, some people would be laid-off, the rich idiots who led us down this path due to their foolishness would jump out of buildings (yay), but eventually things would recover and the system would have restored balance.
The economy is self-correcting.
The government interfering with the economy is only delaying the inevitable.
You need to re-read the Foundation Trilogy and Foundation's Edge. Asimov didn't "discover" miniaturization. He was describing two separate civilizations, each with a different philosophy:
- The Galactic Empire did everything gradiose, with mega-ships, but that lack of innovation led to decay and destabilization.
- The Foundation, located on the edge of space, had limited resources so they were forced by circumstances to do things in a small way. They innovated.
Two different civilizations; two different approaches.
Of course it does. Star Trek is Science-based fiction; it's supposedly to be logical and believable. If the reality is that antimatter does not exist (or so rare that it's an impractical fuel source), then that means we cannot build warp engines and will never build a quadrant-spanning civilization. I would have preferred the Next Generation series did the same thing they did in the original - don't try to come-up with an explanation. Because the one they have now (fueled by matter/antimatter) makes absolutely no sense.
Bringing this back to real-world:
Everyone keeps talking about hydrogen. Hydrogen fuel cells & hydrogen cars & hydrogen power plants. Great. But where are we going to find these megatons of hydrogen??? It doesn't exist naturally, which means it's a really lousy source of power. Not practical.
>>>The Original Series bridge looked like something strait out of the 70's...
That's amazing considering it was made in 1965. Huh. Maybe Gene had a time travel device that let him peak into the disco era and copy it./end sarcasm. THIS new movie ship will look like it was made somewhere around... 2010. And it will look very aged come 2020 or 2030.
MORE: "Abrams wanted to take the original TV-series Enterprise and the movie-franchise Enterprise and fuse them together."
He has no concept of continuity. The Enterprise didn't just suddenly change. It had an original design, and then it was upgraded with new nacelles and internal systems. It was a logical, consistent process of military upgrades. Abrams is a fucking idiot to just suddenly decide to "morph" the two designs together; how does that make any logical sense?!?!? And you know what? His show Alias sucked after the first season, Lost is slow & boring, and I don't recall anything else Abrams has done that was worthwhile.
I'm just starting to think Abrams is the worst thing to happen to Trek since Ron "I never watched Star Trek" Berman. Why don't they had the reins to someone who actually cares about the franchise like Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski? Or even Joss Whedon. I'm sure he'd do a better job than Abrams.
"I'll fuse the TV ship with the movie ship" - stupid twit.
I have designed multiple weapons systems for the Navy and Army, and they DO have circuit breakers, because we don't want a 440 volt surge going through a 3.3 volt Pentium, now do we? No. That would be bad. It would mean you couldn't fire your missiles or point-defense systems because its CPU is now a small circle of molten plastic.
We want the weapons to be as immune to electrical surges, shock, and vibration as possible. Even after the USS Cole was "mined" by local terrorists, our VLS System still had the ability to counterattack.
I understand where the matter comes from (hydrogen scooped from space, or refueling at the local spacestation), but where do they get the ANTImatter? I mean, it's not as though it's just laying-around waiting to be scooped up.
That's true! Scotty liked the ladies, he was just more focused on a long-term commitment.
Abrahms Star Trek I think will be as different from the original series, as was Battlestar Galactica Reboot to its original 1978-79 series. They are taking continuity and throwing it out the window, which means everything we've seen between 1966 and 2001 (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY inclusively) will be shitcanned.
"Lego had stepped to the European Court of Justice in the fight against the Canadian competitor Mega fire, which a cube on the market has brought that watches out which of Lego. Hmmm. Well my fish is almost 40 years old.
"Lego was, according to the European Court of Justice objected in the fight against the Canadian competitor mega brands, which is a cube on the market that has brought shall apply to those of Lego. The Court ruled today that the design of Lego not protected by the European trademark law and that there is no question of exclusive rights."
Nope. Still sounds like nonsense.
Here's what Deutsche Welle says: "The European Union's Court of First Instance turned down Lego's appeal to force the EU's trademarks and designs office to reissue its trademark for the shape of its standard red Lego brick with eight cylindrical knobs.
"The EU court, however, sided with a 2004 decision made by the EU agency, which had canceled Lego's trademark after rival toy maker Canada's Mega Brands Inc. filed an appeal to Lego's application. Mega Brands produces similar plastic building blocks that compete with Lego."

Why not just make an entirely new show then? Call it "Space Journey". There's no need to ruin the current history (or make Scotty gay).

[Yawn] right back you. The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed as recently as 2005 that ISPs are not common carriers:
See this article here: http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/06/27/1510219
Congressionally-protected, not constitutionally protected. The constitution never discusses ISPs or common carriers.
And even if the Communication Decency Act, Section 230 does protect an ISP from liable for its users statements, that still does NOT make an ISP a "common carrier" which the U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed as recently as 2005: http://money.cnn.com/2005/06/27/technology/broadband_ruling/index.htm?cnn=yes
