How sad it is that by the time MS got their consumer operating system completly out of 16 bit land that 64 bit consumer computers are coming into play. How long will it be before their consumer OS is 64 bit? Another 8 years?
This is rediculous and no one is getting nervous. A 512 bit key is such overkill and for this very reason. If it was brought down to the equivilent of a 170 bit key, I would still trust it. 170 bits is still so fuckin huge that it would take forever to brute force. Lets say that you could somehow try 100 trillion keys a second. It would still take 474,561,668,133,829,461,009,821,559 milleniums to try every 170 bit key. That is a lot to me, and I am not too worried. You would have to have some algorithm that found MAJOR weaknesses before even the 170 bit key could concievably be broken. An attack on the way the keys were generated is much more likly to be succesful at that point.

This is very true. People talk about Linux 'taking over the desktop' which is good, but there is much more immediate niches to fill in other areas. They are good spot for Linux because the people doing that need a complete system, but don't need it to work with every other computer out there, and aren't worried about being able to buy the latest games etc. Printing is another one which he didn't mention but someone here did. Linux needs a better print system, and whoever is in a position to do it could probably even take a look at MacOS X for some very good ideas. 3D is getting the royal treatment and is a very good place for linux right now with XFS, ReiserFS, PRman, BMRT, Mental Ray, Maya, Shake, Softimage XSI 2.0, Houdini, and all sorts of high end graphics stuff, no 3D production studio is locked into windows or SGI anymore. Video and audio on the other hand, really need work. The video toaster ran on an Amiga for fucks sake, that should be proof that ultimate compatibility isn't needed and a self reliant system can do the job well. This is where I really see Linux taking off, is with distributions specifically made for different niches. They could come with all the libraries needed for the different programs you might run, and of course have all the free ones already installed. It will take a few startups to do something like this, however, and startups aren't in a good position right now.
I second all the above. I bought an HDTV monitor and it kicks ass. It has only analog connections as do most HDTV monitors. I will be fucking pissed if everything get down converted to 480p. I will do anything possible to see the full quality.
I completly agree. I could download movies off of Morpheus with my cable connections, but movies in the theatre are bootlegged very poorly, and DVD movies look so good on my HDTV with progressive scan, that I don't bother with movies and stick to TV shows that I can't get anywhere else.

You are missing a big issue for computers that will emerge, and that is real time compression of video codecs like JPEG2000. JPG2k has seemed to go every which way but sober, but it is a proof of concept. Imagine a codec 2 or even 4 times as good as DiviX. Enocode it in real time and you have a very good video stream on your hands. Two people with broadband could video conference very comfortably.
I say who gives a shit about what something's ambiguous primary use is. The act is illegal not materials. If I want to use a bong to try and invent cold fusion I should have the right to.
So how has support for multiple cards changed? I don't know anything about Linux's sound system, but I ask because I know it is making headway in high end 3D work, and it could start to be a driving force in high end audio work (and various other sound applications) if the groundwork was in place.
If they were going to do something like that, then it would be for Quicktime 7 at least. This is happening right now, and Tarkin is more in the planning than writing stage. Mpeg 4 is all planned out and is an option for right now.

I agree with everything here except for the part about Python. Ruby has more of the features listed by him like operator overloading and such, but I wouldn't recommend it because it is fairly immature compared to Java and I don't know about building GUI's in it. It also has some funked up syntax in some aspects and will take a little getting used to. I think that java is the way to go. The only other option is Objective-C which is definitly worth a look. Objective-C on OS X is probably the cleanest, easiest, and most complete API out there, especially when used with all the development tools that come with it right from the start. Objective C won't be as portable as Java, and when using it on OS X it will be even less so because the only thing you have is the GNUstep project to shift your code around.
It isn't really the resolution that matters right now, it is the color. Current digital cameras suck. Nothing compares to film's color, but film is incredibly difficult to work with. Film's resolution will go untouched for quite a while. I could buy a camera and take a picture with 120mm film, but so what? It serves a completely different purpose than this does. If I wanted to go make a movie, it would cost a rediculous amount of money with film. If I had a camera that would do 1080i or 1080p and had color like the pictures in their demonstration page, I would be set, and it would be suitable for digital projection and even acceptable for film transfer. Resolution and quality are a balance, and sheer resolution doesn't always matter, and in this case, they have it good enough for the time being. Someone has to make high-def video cameras for consumers a reality, it would be a gold mine.

XFS handles very large files very well. It is another piece of the puzzle to a great workstation when dealing with lots of huge important files.

So how has support for multiple cards changed? I don't know anything about Linux's sound system, but I ask because I know it is making headway in high end 3D work, and it could start to be a driving force in high end audio work (and various other sound applications) if the groundwork was in place.
If they were going to do something like that, then it would be for Quicktime 7 at least. This is happening right now, and Tarkin is more in the planning than writing stage. Mpeg 4 is all planned out and is an option for right now.

I agree with everything here except for the part about Python. Ruby has more of the features listed by him like operator overloading and such, but I wouldn't recommend it because it is fairly immature compared to Java and I don't know about building GUI's in it. It also has some funked up syntax in some aspects and will take a little getting used to. I think that java is the way to go. The only other option is Objective-C which is definitly worth a look. Objective-C on OS X is probably the cleanest, easiest, and most complete API out there, especially when used with all the development tools that come with it right from the start. Objective C won't be as portable as Java, and when using it on OS X it will be even less so because the only thing you have is the GNUstep project to shift your code around.
It isn't really the resolution that matters right now, it is the color. Current digital cameras suck. Nothing compares to film's color, but film is incredibly difficult to work with. Film's resolution will go untouched for quite a while. I could buy a camera and take a picture with 120mm film, but so what? It serves a completely different purpose than this does. If I wanted to go make a movie, it would cost a rediculous amount of money with film. If I had a camera that would do 1080i or 1080p and had color like the pictures in their demonstration page, I would be set, and it would be suitable for digital projection and even acceptable for film transfer. Resolution and quality are a balance, and sheer resolution doesn't always matter, and in this case, they have it good enough for the time being. Someone has to make high-def video cameras for consumers a reality, it would be a gold mine.
