    I must state that with only a internet-connection, without knowledge of the system what you want to hack, there is no way to create a working exploit out of it.
    You may do a DoS on the service or daemon but that would be anything. For a real exploit you need to:
    - know the exact position of the overflowing buffer
    - know where the programm will jump after accessing the addr
    - hope the buffer is lower in the memory than the active code
    - if lucky calculate how many chars you have to pad 'till you may insert your BadTings(tm) or RemoteConsoleHelpers(tm) without crashing
    - test your stuff
    - inform the vendor. If there is no reaction within acceptable time -> bugtraq (with or without exploit? your choice.)

    Why am I writing this bullshit? :) Don't know.

    I reckon their script follows a route over some
    ftp-search engine like http://ftpsearch.unit.no
    (i know it has moved). Then they might log on and
    try to download the file, check if it has a reason-
    able size (5kB isn't MS-Office) and then trigger
    some stuff. That would be quite elegant, but by
    no means an excuse for the stupid matching they
    made. ;)

    I initially had a strange feeling that the BSA
    runs a bandwidth eating monster, which would
    explain why so many ftp-sites are so slow this
    days... but who knows. :)

    you forgot the secondary route of education. after completing "Realschule" or even "Hauptschule" you can "upgrade" your level by learning a job and afterwards completing the "Berufsoberschule". you then have the same education-level like people who done "Gymnasium".

    i did go this way and my experience in that school was that great that i never want to miss it. it may be because all the students attending this sort of school allready completed a job and thus are (or at least intend to be) no longer children.

    then nerds arent "smarter" than the "dumb" rest, but possess a incompatible intelligice?

    back in school a teacher wantet do try it. she wanted us to play role-games and other unusual things. it failed. perhaps you may never know the exact distribution of the "intelligencies" among the children?

    if this is true then it would be a nice theory but hard to apply to real-world problems.

    there is one thing i don't understand. when you do a freebsd installation, why is the default root (/) filesystem not marked automatically for using softupdates?

    is there a cause for not using it under special circumstances?

    i saw it running on a friends box and thought to myself that this is the sort of game i would never even consider to play. ugh! to look at the game gave me the same feeling like seeing someone die in an accident. :-((

    i never even saw this game in stores which does not say anything because Q3 isn't available either... and i really like playing Q[1|3]

    once i was in a game store and a 14-16 year old wanted to buy half-life i think... he was told that he was too young. but by accident his mother was with him and bought the game for her son. so... in the end all depends on the parents.

    nt will crash even if the hardware is fine!
    it crashes because of some combination of
    hardware and software. you cant track it down.

    NT small biz server crashed completely (with
    reinstall neccesary) when a pop3 retreiver was
    installed on a self built box. after that
    NT was installed on a pre-built compaq box and
    ran fine. linux of course likes the self built
    box and ran since then. :-)

    signal 11 often indicates bad hardware
    like memory or overclocked CPU.

    for me mozilla renders slashdot faster
    then every other browser (even with
    incremental refresh)

    from my pov very important:
    1. a good translation for the foreign languages
      a bad translation can ruin the best film.
      no matter how good the actors are. they will
      no longer carry the story after a bad translation.
      i know mr.card can't deal with every aspect of
      the film, but he can put up rules for the
      translators to follow... hopefully :-)
    2. a good translation of the title
      ONLY IMAGINE: "Ender the Alien-Killer"
      or: "Ender who murdered all the Aliens"
      such translations of titles are quite common here
      in europe. i allways thought these people choosing
      the titles must be absoluteley brain-dead.
    3. a suiting trailer!!!
      have you seen the trailer of contact? what does
      it have in common with the film? or the trailer
      for StarTrek - Insurrection? absolute crap!!!
      IMAGINE: "Once a Boy killed 500mio Ants. But those
      were not ordinary Ants...[dramaticmusicplaying]
      "

    what do you mean with "mien-lieben"?
    mien is definitely no german word.
    there is not even a word that sounds
    alike, except in a very strange dialect.

    if you want to say something like:
    "my dear friends" then "meine lieben"
    should do. although not 100% correct.
    "meine lieben freunde" is much better.

    :-)

    but what does that have to do with W2k ?
    (wolfenstein 2000 != windows 2000)

      look at the Artemis-Page
    • Science
      a huge radio telescope on the back-side of the moon would be great. it would be shielded against all stupid earthling-radiowaves and would have no distorting atmosphere above it.

    just try it on ms-dos. every line you type
    appears magically on the printing device.

    so the complete CON: device gets copied to PRN:

    if no printer is connected to the port you
    get an error (which you cannot cancel)

    sysrq + no printer = have to reboot
