There was one day in Spring 2003 when the power cut out for a split second. On my buddy list, I saw everyone in the dorms get signed off. My roommate's computer rebooted, the TV shut off, the clock on the microwave reset. And yet, my computer was just fine. I figured it was because of my kickass Belkin surge protector.
Subsequently, I got a UPS for when I finished school and moved back out. When that lovely blackout hit, my comp was just fine.
I've grown fond of Belkin products. But after this article, there's just no fucking way I'm ever buying anything from them again. So can someone recommend a company that makes good UPSes and surge protectors for a reasonable price? Thanks...
I keep hearing people ask this and no one seems to want to address it:
Electronic voting machines are "the solution" to allowing the blind and other disabled people to vote.
As soon as someone says something about getting rid of electronic voting machines, lobbyists go into action screaming about discrimination against the disabled. And what politician wants to be seen as opposed to crippled people? It's not about auditability (is that a word?) or ease of use or making a difference, it's about not being stuck holding the bucket when the shit hits the fan.
Until the hardcore Anti-Diebold people address this straight up for real, the rest of us will remain fucked.
(don't agree w/ my reasoning? look at what's going on in Maryland plzkthxlolwtf...)
At this point, given everything we've already seen, how could anything that Microsoft does possibly be considered "bad publicity"?
Tomorrow,/. will run a story claiming "Microsoft Kicked Puppy in Street". It will include lots of +5 Insightful comments about that time Microsoft Stole Cand-E from a Baby. Meanwhile, Microsoft will continue to rake in billions of dollars.
It's great publicity for the guy who just got fired though, all he has to do is put up a paypal link and he'll have plenty of breathing room while he searches for a new job.
Hi, no one wants to go to Mars more than I do, but has anyone noticed that our (if you're in the U.S.) Dear Leader wants us to spend $87 billion on Iraq?
Guess what: if there is a space race, I don't think we'll be involved. Whether we like it or not:(
Can you please show how ANY of the new rules specified in the Patriot Act would have allowed law enforcement to prevent 9/11?
Can you show the Patriot Act being used to prevent terrorist attacks from occuring? I'm not talking about rounding up some brown-skinned people and locking them away 'indefinitely', I'm talking about actual terrorists w/ actual evidence that they were planning to blow shit up.
Sheep like you are a bigger threat to our freedoms than Saddam Hussein ever was.
This month's DDJ and last month's issue run C++ compilers through a bunch of benchmarks. Basically Visual C++.NET 2003 produces the smallest code and is only slightly less compliant than gcc 3.3.
Will it be staffed by people making ~$2/hour?
Because "the T-Kitten" doesn't sound nearly as interesting to venture capitalists.
You know, I know that Onion article was satire/parody, but has it said anything that hasn't come true?

What does the Securities and Exchange Commission have to do w/ the sun?
mod parent up
An entertaining article on the subject was featured in the latest issue of 2600. It mainly concerned pasta and boiled eggs.
And whistling into telephones in order to launch nuclear weapons. *cough*
Tough words. Do you have anything even resembling an alternative?
Yay, updated Common Language Infrastructure! Whoo Whoo!
Command Line? WTF?
Now, only terrorists and "rogue" natious will have boric acid...
still no cure for cancer...

Any guarantee they'll count the absentee ballots?

Am I the only one who thinks citizens of a society should cooperate instead of going, "me first! me first!" all the time?
If FTAA stood for Free Trade Association of America, I'd probably be freaking out a lot more.
Once again, Stephen Hawking has the perfect response to this.

Is that even possible?
