Who the hell cares? If people want to pay Apple that much money then they can. Its their money, spend how you want people. Apple will charge what the market will allow. When their prices hurt the bottom line too much (or the iphone and ipod stop saving their arses) then you might see a shift in business model... but until then... stop all the damn bitching and whining. Its annoying.

I haven't used the Mandriva distro. I'm not sure what they use for package installation, but my guess is that it uses Apt-get? I'm sure it doesn't use RPM. Even so, go out, grab the source and compile. Its there to do.

If FF was "sort of integrated" due to various library dependencies then wouldn't that make it MORE likely to be available? All programs have library dependencies. At least you can uninstall FF from your machine if you don't like it. I haven't tried to uninstall IE recently, but I know I couldn't do it at all not too long ago.

It would be innovation if IE could ever catch FF. So why isn't it innovation when FF finds new and better ways to stay ahead of them?

Maybe if you WERE a developer, like I am, then you would understand how innovative FF has been and how much their "lack of innovation" has forced IE to be half as decent as it is today. /end-pwn

People will use what you put in front of them. Every time I work on someone's machine I make the recommendation that they use FF. They never turn my idea down. They ask, "Why?". So I tell them that it is better and they go, "Oh, ok." They use what is at their finger tips. Its just a matter of time until all the "black-box" users are over onto FF and the only IE users that will be left will be the fan boys/girls.

Yeah, CL is a pain in the arse, but at the same time rather helpful. Just enough to be useful sometimes, but not useful enough to be used all the time. Its really rather strange.

Where I went to school I had professors that were mathematicians for GE, and programmers for IBM and the likes. And then I had other profs that I would call "institutionalized" profs. Who never saw a day of industry but had all the answers.

It would be interesting to see if the rates of professionals entering academia as profs has decreased over the last 25 years... I have a feeling that it has.

5 years of experience far outweighs 4 years of college. There is an old saying that goes "I learned more in my first 4 months at work that I did in 4 years of college." Sure, I went to school for computer science and mathematics. I programmed in C++, Python, VB, HTML, Javascript and other math related languages. Now I'm doing database driven programming on the iSeries. I never saw a single line of RPG IV code or CL code when I was in college. But where I live, that is in demand. And a year into the job I know more than if it had been my main focus in college. Why? Because I'm doing meaningful work and not just busy work examples that most colleges push on their undergrad students.

CS programs need to not only teach basic theory (the reason why I could pick up new languages fast) but also real world industry examples and projects. Academia and Industry just aren't as closely related as they once were.
