I don't really have that much of a problem with your views. Once you clarified them it appears that you are pretty logical. Yes M$ does over charge for shitty software. I think that they will get what they deserve as the trend is already well on its way. Linux is probably a good 5 years from being truly mainstream, but it going to happen. Mozilla has done a great job in grabbing market share. People that use the open source web browsers are learning that Open Source doesn't always mean a steep learning curve.
My rant wasn't really aimed at you per say but the way your argument started. You may not have meant it the way it came out, but the sad fact is that there are many people that do mean it that way. And they take it to some pretty far extremes. When people speak with their wallets the companies like M$ will have no choice but to listen. And that day will come, far sooner than they would like to admit.

Nah, I run the server stuff on a server. I just do my coding and testing from the laptop. That thing couldn't handle web servers and databases. When I bought my laptop in '01 it wasn't cheap. It wasn't the TOP of the line, but it wasn't far off. I replace the power supply in it when it was almost a year old, haven't had a single problem with it since.
My wife and I also only have cell phones. We have cable internet because it was cheaper then paying for a phone one AND dsl. I'll probably just add any kids we have to our cell plan and then monitor their usage. You can even distribute minutes to each number so they can't run up the bill. Sounds good to me:)

Precisely. I have a P4, 1.7ghz, with 512MB ram. It is coming up on its 7th birthday. I have it running xp home, factory installed. I have NEVER reloaded the machine, only done regular maintenance to keep it snappy. I don't play games on it nowadays since it would be pretty worthless, but it works just fine for web development or surfing while I'm sitting on my arse in front of the TV.
The screen is finally showing signs of age, and could probably just quit working any time. Its going to be a sad day. I wish it was something other than the screen going on it, that way replacing it would be cost effective and I could keep my old trusty sidekick.
There is a certain attachment you get to your computers when they have been completely stable for 7 years. Its like an old dog dying, sure you'll get a new one, but it can't truly replace what you're losing.

So sign up for skype and let them talk away, or vonage. Either way its cheaper than POTS and if used any amount at all is way cheaper than a tracphone.

Exactly. Especially since in today's society there are tons of businesses that offer free wifi. Some of them aren't so clearly labeled, so while you would think you are connecting to a local free wifi point, you could actually be connecting to some dope across the street that has their home wifi completely open and broadcasting to the world.
If you know enough about technology to claim someone is stealing your wifi when it is completely open then you know enough how to make it NOT completely open and its your fault. Society has been trained technologically that if the wifi is free and open then that must be what the owner intended, if they didn't then they would have taken steps to otherwise say so.
I was really lucky to get done with school right before they went on this tirade of no-child-left-behind. When I was in school we had that already. If you didn't read at the current level you would go to a supplemental reading class. If your math wasn't very good, you would go to a supplemental math class. If you were really gifted you got to go to the gifted class. The supplemental classes were during a "free-teaching" period where the teacher could go off of the standard material and broaden the students' horizons on non-standard subjects.
This worked really well. You challenged the extra smart kids, helped the ones that were struggling, and educationally entertained the rest of the student population. That seemed like a fair setup to me even though I missed the gifted program by 2 points.
If the politicians don't stop pandering to all the parents that are in denial that little johnny or little suzie are different and listen to the teachers that are in these schools the next generation is going to be at a disadvantage to the rest of the world as far as education is concerned.
They will make more money from two accounts that receive 3 movies at a time then they will for a single account that receives 6 movies at a time.
