If you don't like the way the government runs you are free to vote for candidates that you feel will do as you want. Its a government of the "people" not "person" (read:InvisiblePinkUnicorn). Thanks for being so considerate as to take ALL of your fellow countrymen into consideration. I'm glad that only YOU matter.
While I appreciate being modded Insightful, I wonder if anybody actually found this amusing. I guess I should have ended the post with an end tag. or something along those lines.
Just trying to piggy back some current political events onto a joke, but I didn't realize that people had ACTUALLY considered this.
No one really argued against this, think of all the data transmission lines that would need to be installed, how hard it would be to maintain them in that climate, and just getting all the equipment there...the costs would far out weight the benefits...
I guess I just didn't point to enough drawbacks to make this a logical joke...
Oh well...
I don't get it. Besides "think of the Polar Bears", I can't see why we don't just move all our data centers to the arctic. We can pump oil right out of the ground and burn it for the electricity needed to power the units. We don't need AC just some air pumps to push the cold air through the building. That solves two problems right there.
1)We can now pump oil out of the national reserves in Alaska 2)We don't have to work very hard to cool the data centers.
I laughed so hard that I cried. Why would you post such a gem as an AC. A travesty. I had to physically hold my mouth shut so that I didn't disturb the other guys in the office with roaring laughter. HAHA. That was priceless.
This is about decreasing our dependence on foreign oil. So what if someone else is "going to burn it anyway". That's not the point. I think that our "carbon footprint" is an over hyped money machine to begin with. Should we do things that help the environment? Of course we should. But electric/hybrid cars are only the beginning of getting us to where we need to go. There are over 247,000,000 cars in America http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passenger_vehicles_in_the_United_States
Toyota announced yesterday that they want to be producing 1 million new hybrid cars per year by 2010 (still two years away). Even if the other automakers can get to 500,000 by then you're looking at maybe 3 to 4 million hybrid/electric cars per year by 2010. You are trying to replace 247 million cars... Thats a looooong time. So if you have this drop in replacement who the hell cares about the emissions part of it as long as its close. People are so disillusioned about how much effect switching 3 million cars per year in the US will be. Its a slow process and it will NOT eliminate our dependence on foreign oil in the next 25 years.
I agree. This is why I've already contacted Chris Carney (my congressman), Senator Spector, and Senator Casey about this. I would urge all of you who live here to contact your elected officials as well. Things like this don't get stopped because we bitch about them on/. They get stopped because the people tell their elected officials they don't want it. The reason why no one in this country is aware of it is because no one in the media will cover a story like this. They know what the outcry would be, so if people don't speak up now, this thing will pass and go right on to the President's desk without question.
Nice argument except it is a false one. You think that the people looking at this crap aren't partaking in it in real life? Have you seen Dateline lately? And these are just the guys that like 12 - 15 year olds. I think that you are right in that there will be no "end" to the fight. But your argument that we should stop fighting because it will cause *more* harm is crap. The more of these people that we get off the streets the better, the harder we make it for them to get this stuff the better.
This is exactly what I was thinking. They can go after the ISPs and hosts to hand over customer data for copyright infringement. I would think this is standard operating procedure for the people investigating this stuff. There don't need to be any more laws. There are enough of those on the books to handle the warrants needed. If an agency sees a sight with this crap on it, that is all the reasonable suspicion they need to get a warrant for the person paying to host this stuff or to have the ISP hand over their information.
Use these sights to track down the offenders and prosecute and have a key burning party.
I'm not sure my math was right? Check my math!
Wow, I'm embarrassed. I flipped my numbers... $13.00 divided by 1000 impressions is $.013. Just over a penny per viewer. So let people pay $.05 to watch it ad free. A nickel? Who wouldn't pay a nickel? Most people would. No ads, increased revenue.
How much are the advertisers paying for you to see their ad during that episode? Even at a high rate of $13 per 1000 impressions you would be looking at $.77 per episode. So sell ad free rentals for maybe $.50 and let the people who don't mind the advertising see it for free. I'm sure that it doesn't cost $13 per 1000 impression at this rate. Any body have any numbers on this?
They pulled the plug on Terry Schaivo because they felt she no longer had the "potential" for awareness and life. An embryo or zygote still has that potential. There is a difference between "brainless" that has a brain that is not functioning and "brainless" that consists of a developing clump of nerves and cells. Both are still human. One has potential, one does not. We let the one without potential die because it was consuming resources without any possibility of showing "signs of life". There was no awareness potential.
"genuine war hero without whom we might not have the internet today"
Two points on this statement in relation to Gore.
1) War hero? What war? And how was he a hero?
2) Is that the same internet we use today? You are posting on/. and you have the balls to claim that Al f*ck*ing Gore invented the internet. AMAZING!
This article has had some of the WORST posts I've ever seen on this site...
if(state="NY")
echo "Sorry, your state is run by a bunch of money grubbers that don't care about YOU! Affiliation DENIED!";
else//do existing code here
There, now that their system is updated they can just focus on the lost sales...
Of course, I'm sure it will come with a brand new Russian interweb browsing suite, so that you don't have to wade through all the "junk" out there in the "free" world. Its all about the user experience right?
How do you get modded as +5 Insighful for that post? First you quote the nytimes! Then you write an insinuating statement like we live in some police state and if you say something or look the wrong way then you could just get thrown in jail! That's all BULLSHIT! I think your post is 1. offtopic, and 2. Troll. You make some dramatic statement and that is insightful....HAHA! How about this. People stop breaking the laws and we'll stop putting them in jail. Its really that easy. We don't just make shit up. We have this thing called innocent until proven guilty...it actually works. Maybe you don't agree with some of the laws against drug or prostitution. But here in America the PEOPLE vote in our elected officials, and those officials make these laws. Ironically enough the majority of the people in America SUPPORT the anti drug laws and anti prostitution laws and until the people change their mind it will stay that way. So if you don't like it then its time for you to run for office and get out your message and change it, or you can just leave and live somewhere else.
So you have a botnet, its running amock causing unknown amounts of damage to people's property and putting even more people in harms way. And you really think its a bad idea for a few experts to scramble a hash on their computer "because it might wipe out their HDD". You have to have a better argument than that! I want to see an example of how you can scramble the hash and cause this. Has anyone proved that it can even be done? Until I see proof that there is a high risk that these guys could accidentally erase someone's HDD I say go get the bastards.
That's like saying you we shouldn't have attacked Germany in WWII because someone innocent might die. Yeah, its war, innocent people die in war. The goal, however, is to keep that number as small as possible. The proportion of people saved in WWII heavily outnumbered the possible innocent lives that would be lost, and maybe I'm stretching the analogy a bit here, but I think that the number of HDD's that would be negatively affected is far lower than the amount of good that would come out of this.
my $.02
But you just said that you don't like the taste. Which is fine. I don't like the taste of some foods and therefor don't eat them. There is a difference in being a vegetarian because you don't like the taste and because you feel bad for them.
Either way I could careless why YOU don't eat meat. But for these people to try and tell ME what I should or shouldn't eat is ridiculous. I'm all about the ethical treatment of animals. But I don't consider killing them for food unethical.
Yes, the government DOES have the right to tax us, because WE gave the government that right.
If you don't like the way the government runs you are free to vote for candidates that you feel will do as you want. Its a government of the "people" not "person" (read:InvisiblePinkUnicorn). I did, in FF3. Must be a bug ;)

But when the pilot forgets to turn off his mic and tells the co-pilot he needs a coffee and a blow job how is the stewardess going to deliver?

The sad part is that sometimes incompetent people get put in charge of important things... *sorry mr. president...
