  1. Re:direct and inverse things on Believing You Are Very Good Or Evil Boosts Your Physical Capabilities · · Score: 1

lately I started to observe this: the stronger you think you are, the stronger you are. and the smarter you think you are, the dumber you are.

Indeed, and the number one reason someone disagrees with you is not because they don't understand what you do, but they understand all that fully, plus they understand some other things you don't. An intelligent man asks such a person why they think what they do, in light of this or that. An idiot tells such a person that they are the idiot, and explains what he or she knows without even asking what the other person knows that they don't, assuming simply that the other person must be dull for not having reached the same conclusion as themselves. And they encounter this so often, they soon convince themselves that the world is full of idiots. There's probably a direct correlation between how stupid someone is and how widespread they believe stupidity is among other people.

Seems to be similar to the Dunning-Kruger effect which has often been discussed on /.

The law and the recording industry need to adapt to the changing world. How ridiculous does this have to get before they realize that fact. If the price of an album had gone down with the advent of CD's instead of being double the cost of a tape I would bet we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

As for the device I followed the link you provided and this is the product they were selling. After posting this I read further and they have a corded remote of sorts for selecting the files that are loaded from the flash drive. This would be useful since you could put all your floppies on the flash drive and select which one you wanted loaded into the device memory at that time. My only intention was to provide more information about the device you mentioned as I find it fascinating in theory. I say in theory since most devices I've run into that required say 20 floppies to load the firmware also had a serial port that allowed me to load it that way. But that device would be very useful in certain situations. Like the gentleman who had to load designs into his fabrication machinery.

I read TFM and it said you actually load files from the USB drive into it's internal memory. It also said something about being able to choose which files are loaded somehow. But even better you can plug a network cable in to it and use it's built in web-server to upload files directly into memory. This would be an incredibly Rube Goldberg solution unless you were using an expensive to replace legacy device that only had a floppy drive and then it would save you a lot of switching out of floppies.

Also just for good measure. FTA Obama was quoted as saying, "Can't I get a friggin' shark with a laser on it's head? Is that too much to ask?"

I would readily pay 300 dollars for a well designed device that would let me surf(wi-fi), watch movies, and read e-books. The touch screen, good battery and flood of apps are all secondary. It was ahead of its time but the 999 price tag is what really made it tank. You will often see this with companies bringing out new tech and saying, "Oh well, no one wanted it." Yeah I guess no one wanted electric cars like they had in the 90's when a decent electric or hybrid would cost you the same as a BMW and probably drive like a Gremlin in need of a tuneup.

How about that?

Are you thinking about forming an action committee because I think I could get government funding for this? Actually I think they do a pretty good job of delegating that kind of work to themselves. Being a jock is a stereotype that the person being stereotyped often wants to promote. Then again not everyone is cut out for professional careers. It would be sad if someone got stereotyped as a jock and could have been a great inventor.

If intolerance is wrong, is it wrong to be intolerant of intolerant people?

I too have thought of this often. I don't claim to have the answer but these are my thoughts. If we all agree intolerance = bad then it is always bad. Unfortunately reality isn't so black and white. It is OK to be intolerant of things that are considered taboo like murder or abuse. So what we are really talking about is socially unacceptable intolerance as being bad.
But even deeper I think what may be at the root of your question is that you need to separate the intolerance from the person. If something is socially unacceptable, like intolerance toward a certain race, then it is not only good but our duty as a member of society to be intolerant of the persons actions but not the person. They are not where you are yet but if we just dismiss them nothing changes. If we are tolerant of people and help them overcome their intolerance then we can grow together as a society.
BTW If anyone has figured out how to do this let me know. Currently if I try to reason with someone and they wont come around I still just have to disassociate myself from them.

I use them in the fridge, the porch, the garage, the bathrooms, and basically everywhere in and around my house. Never had one I bought go out yet. One came with my current residence so I don't know how old it is and it flickers on and off sometimes. Brand does make a difference for the warm up time. The first ones I bought from some home supply store were irritatingly slow to warm up. But since I can now get them at Costco they usually have better quality stuff. The last batch I bought have no noticeable warm up time. Besides breaking them myself by dropping I have had none go out since I started using them. This is only my personal experience but since you were using yours to make your point I felt that I could counter in kind.
