or 100's of FPGA's can do what was previously considered a task that even with super computing resources was considered so time consuming to be only worthwhile for groups like the nsa: http://www.copacobana.org/index.html (the EFF had a simlar custom chip device several years before but that cost >$250K)
I have never seen a switch fail what are you doing to them? mine are just consumer 5-16port devices but they are in constant use quite often at maximum capacity for several hours at a time while large files are transfered over the network. I think I have had one crash needing a reeboot once and had to reset another after a momentry power loss another time.
the fastest computers today are just about good enough to run dos box with the most demanding dos games at decent frame rates. For me I cannot run flight unlimited in DOS box >10fps on a sempron 3400+. So In 20 years time it should be posible to run crysis in a VM:D
it's nature.. you pay to have your stuff put in it so other people can pay to read it. Think of it as a paid for nutjob filter (it's meant to keep them out). They are all well and good if you belong to an achidemic institution with a subscription but if you are not at that stage in your education and just end up at their door through curiosity or as extention of your existic studies it can be very infuriating. For example I found getting hold of a paper published in 1928! on the origianl usage of a voltage multiplying rectifier circuit not posible without paying £30.. (which I didn't do I just built one to find the information I was after).
Throw enough effort at breaking TPM and it will fall. For example if it came to it you could use a scanning tunneling electron microscope to read the actual circuitry that makes up the TPM chip and charge stored in the devices memory. Although if you have the TPM chips scematic and a logic anyliser that shouldn't be a problem.
what gets me about ITER is that they are so pesimistic! there predicting viable fusion slowly been rolled out in 50 years time, if all goes to plan. I am sure that the technical problems are huge but still why so long?
Quantum Fireball.. still got a 60mB one of those with loads of DOS games on that I think still works. Then agian it may be the exception that proves the rule.
they have come down a blank cd can be had for less than a pence if you buy in large enough quantities. It's just not viable to sell CD's at less than the cost of transportation in individual quantities.
problem is that the plants grown from monsato seeds cross polinate non monsato plants causing them not to produce viable seed and so the farmer that has not had anything to do with monsato now has no seed for the next years crop.
not enough controll. Say for arguments sake I was setting up a server using vista (URGH). I couldn't run the FTP server under its own user account which only has the permisions needed for the ftp server and can only R/W the directories needed for the server. In this circumstance I don't have to trust the FTP server to be secure because even if comprimised only the data in the ftp directories is in any danger. Vista as far as I know is not capable of things like that.
erm why so slow ADSL 2 manages 24Mb/s under ideal conditions while retaining the capability for traditional phone calls in the UK. With the spare bandwidth reserved for voice (3.5KHz I think) this should be even faster.
If ready for the desktop means GUI everything and consistant style (read intigrated everything) you can count me out. The fastest to use programs use keyboard shortcuts for all common tasks, this is initialy slower than a gui but eventualy multiple times faster. I prefer a fast CLI, with the gui only used for software that benifits from it.
inteligent alien life just opens up too many of holes in their religion for even the the fervent to ignore. They are not the usualy logical contridictions (IE belive in one god then you must belive in all to have even standard of proof). But the big holes like the entire book is not true obviously and in almost every paragraph.
We must get off this rock because if our asumptions about life on other planets are correct it's resnoable to assume that they also have inteligence and are also making the first steps (AT LEAST) into space. Eventualy these lifeforms will start to colonise... do you want to be the backwards miners or the federation?
the x86 architecture, it comes from the 8086 which was manufactured from 1972. Although moden proccesors are not nativly x86 at some point there is one of the 8086's opcodes been decoded.
I have run a version of ircII compiled in 1993 succefully on ubuntu 6.10. I was attempting to make an automated IRC donwload bot to grab anime when it was released but failed. Seems no one else has manged to code one aswell.
On the other hand using a PIC teaches you to do without the luxaries of a pc. Every single bit ends up getting used in a complex project. As for calibration drift thats a problem that effects expensive multimeters aswell which is why they are calibrated yearly (usualy). Anyway buy a cheap one and learn how to calibrate it yourself using a presision voltage referance.
You don't need a super-duper CPU for text editing
clearly you have never used EMACSor 100's of FPGA's can do what was previously considered a task that even with super computing resources was considered so time consuming to be only worthwhile for groups like the nsa: http://www.copacobana.org/index.html (the EFF had a simlar custom chip device several years before but that cost >$250K)
what is wrong with the moderation this should be +5 funny!

why is this consigned to a substory and yet a stupid song about some basic maths a full one.
Ah so this is the april fools! one moment I thought I was on DIGG.

minimalist and EMACS.. two words I never thought could be next to each other.

thanks for following that up for me. Shame I am not yet a real EE :P still a uk A lvl student.
you can get uncapped in the uk it just costs alot about £75 a month for 2mbit/s
just remove the need for the "lock" disasemble the program and remove all the DRM check code. There program runeth. Just may take slightly longer.
