If it's a not-for-profit site I suggest going ahead and telling IE users to get a real browser. The few images I use on my site are JPEG for small files and PNG for large files. I also use CSS which I know doesn't work with older browsers. If it doesn't work then they are free to turn CSS off and look at the site in the plain brown wrapper mode. Happily, IE6 has gotten much closer to rendering the CSS correctly and so have recent versions of Opera (although Solaris versions seem to have problems).

I'd like to see browsers drop native support of Java, Javascript, etc and at least get CSS and PNG/MNG graphics working properly.

Anyway mine would be more like a homemade tablet PC excepting that I'd probably allow it to be plugged in to an external video source so that it could act as a monitor for other computers when needed.

Remember that these 80 lines of code are beyond the ability of Linux hackers to write too. Doh.

How can anyone give a shit of 80 lines including comments? For all we know it could be something SCO or IBM added to Linux to make it more compatible with SCO Unix. A slight interface tweak somewhere. If so, and they don't want the code in Linux, then tell us where and it'll be fixed. Shit, it'd take 8000 lines of code before I'd start being sympathetic to this claim. 80 lines is a large chunk? Pathetic dickheads!

That also makes me wonder what third parties hold copies of SCO's source code and are able to validate when those lines were added to their source code. Without some proof of when they were added to SCO you can't really compare things fairly and will have no idea who stole from who. Even if some retard wrote 'this was stolen from SCO' in the Linux comments there'd be doubt as to if SCO put that there themselves or not. Whereas Linux is subject to public CVS (or whatever they use now) which probably includes records of who checked out/in code and when they did it. It may be that given the evidence of what code is duplicated that the Linux folks can say exactly who added it and when.

I have thought of doing a mod that merged a LCD and a computer but I was going to slightly enlarge the LCD's case and hide the computer inside such that you'd have an overall MUCH smaller less messy package. Of course I was going to use a mini-itx system and probably leave out fans, hdd drives, disk drives, etc and just let it boot/run as a thin client. Much smaller and cleaner looking.

Computers should neither be seen nor heard. They should just be the magic that runs in the background. :)

Sounds as if ripping LD's would be easier than VHS. It's not exactly the rippiing of VHS that is hard as much as making sure everything does what it's supposed to. I've yet to find an off the shelf VCR with anything like a serial port interface.

Yes, MPEG2 is what I mean. MPEG4 in my experience has more artifacts than MPEG2 although this may be possibly because you keep the MPEG2 artifacts and add new ones. At least when ripping a DVD to MPEG4. I don't care about disk space really. It's my goal is to cross the terabyte mark in my home storage yet this year. Amazing how fast you go through space with 5Gb or so a file. Overall, I'm very pleased with the quality though. As you say DVD isn't a perfect standard but it's good enough for my use (at least for now).

You can do it your way but it is sloppy in general. To have a complete system you have to build a player that can also be written to and can be ordered to rewind, fast forward, play, stop, and record from software.. as well as the real hard part which is making the thing keep proper records and confirm the status. I'm really surprised there aren't at least a couple easily purchased drives like this. I built a vending machine to convert vhs tapes to dvd and whew what a pain. I'd think LD would be the same.

Why would you rip to mpeg4? I just rip to the good old standard mpeg. Each movie is practically identical to what is on the dvd - just have the encryption removed.
