I think you'll need a DVD drive as I don't expect your cd drive can read a DVD (unless it's a combo drive). I doubt it matters if it's an external drive but off the top of my head I don't know how the system would address such a drive.
You just need to read the first meg off the disc in raw mode and make a md5 checksum of that which you convert into a hex digest. If you're a programmer that'll probably make sense. If not then I probably am just babbling. My only PC in this state (ie I don't have to travel cross country for) that has a DVD drive runs Linux so that is my dev paltform.:)
Not that I recall but it was a pretty impresive construction for a toddler. I glued together every penny I could find (100's of them) into a weird spiral pattern and attached wires and batteries and bits of clocks and things like that.
It should be noted that at around the same age that I managed to melt my babysitters etch a sketch by trying to turn it into a computer. I wrapped wire around the handles and tied the other ends around the handles of some nice lil metal scissors.. which I then tried to plug into an outlet.
Maybe I watched to much tv as a kid. (I was also pretty seriously injured trying to learn to fly.) I've still got the builders itch though.;)
If you're interested in DVD related projects stop by my site http://kavlon.org/index.php/dvdlookup and add a few fingerprints from whatever DVD's you have laying around. I'm trying to build a catalog of fingerprints for as many DVD's as possible so I can verify how well my current fingerprinting method works.. if it works well enough I'm wanting to incorporate it into my player and ripping software as well as obviously making the data available to others to use. The basic idea is like cddb but for DVD's. It's probably already been done but I couldn't find any information on a public db of this kind for DVD's so I'm creating my own. The method given on the website only works for Unix but if there is interest I'll post some code for doing it in Windows (or maybe MacOS?) too. I use a bit of Python myself but the results are the same so I haven't posted my code yet.
If you feel your doing a good job and like the job but not the way you're treated by your employer then why not start your own company? Take your whole group at once and let your current employer know they can hire your new company. If you work as a group you have more power. Of course be sure you have enough savings to afford the jump.:)
I didn't really realize how often I used my thumb until recently when I hurt it (by dropping a couple hundred pounds of boards on top of it) and then finding out that it's hard to do just about everything you do with your hands if your thumb is injured.
I can't see my thumb replacing my forefinger as my main finger simply because it's shorter and pointed more inward than the forefinger. I do use my thumbs quite a lot but the forefinger is just better suited for some tasks. I've grown up using the thumbs for video games and uses such as that and I do see what the article is getting at. I'd say that I use a combination of my forefinger and thumb together quite a lot. On both hands.
I'd do it live. So it'd refund back as fast as their credit card or PayPal account could handle. No use delaying these things. I get pissed when a company owes me money and takes forever in transfering it.. but of course if I owe them money and am a day late then they add fees and ruin my credit.:)
I'd say Linux (or BSD) would eb a better sand box to learn to program in.. since it's impossible for a child to accidently crash the system. They can do anything they want in their own account and things will keep running.
I'd suggest Python as an easy language to learn. I've been making a somewhat LOGO-like module for Python that uses Pygame for it's display. That could be a nice starting place for children.
I learned most my PC skills from breaking the family PC and rushing to fix it before my parents killed me. Of course it wasn't long before my parents were breaking the PC and asking me to fix it. I'll definately be giving my children a PC each as soon as they can sit up and teaching them how to take it apart and rebuild it. I'll probably wait until they can read and write to teach them programming.:)
Is this any different than giving your kids legos or teaching them to build a tree house or any other hands on skills? At 2 I was already learning about chemistry and machines. I tried to build a time machine. As a kid I built robots and rebuilt my Atari.. all before the age of 10. I'd feel bad if I held my own children back.
Isn't it great news to see giant retailers that have already expanded to kill most local markets now expanding to try to do the same to online markets. I was fine with Walmart until they went to SuperWalmarts and HyperWalmarts. They killed off smaller local retailers, local grocery stores, local gas stations, local banks.. and now they have to attack the media rental business? As a consumer how do I benefit from having a single business control everything?
Not to say I never buy from Walmart but I make an effort to buy equally from other retailers also. Even if they can't compete with Walmart on a price basis I've found many Mom & Pop places have a lot better service and can offer you things that aren't offered by the likes of Walmart.
In this regard I suggest Greencine for online rentals. They have a good selection and if you want something they don't have they will get it for you. They respond quickly and friendly to all questions and suggestions. Overall I like them a lot.
I do buy cheap movies from Walmarts. They now offer VHS movies for $4 and DVD's for $6. Not a bad price at all. I'd rather buy at that price than bother renting. Walmart still has some issues with very limited offerings though.. finding anime there really is impossible.:)
Greencine has some adult titles. I don't think they have anything hardcore but they do have some skin and sex titles. Skinamax and Anime type stuff.
If you want harder porn then invest in me. I was going to offer those titles when I was working towards my own such service. I lost my job again before I really had enough movies. I still know where I can buy them wholesale though. Damn.:)
I've been electrocuted many MANY times and I've seen people seriously hurt by electricity. It's not a toy to play sadistic little games with. If you can't have fun without hurting yourself then there is good reason for you to seek mental help.
Shouldn't be a big deal. It's perfectly legal to rent out media. Besides I could use some ammo to fight those bastards with. I'd imagine it'd really grow my business to be attacked by those groups. Every geek in the country would probably shop with me.;)
I guess you'd hafta bank with me to get your free software. However since I don't like Microsoft you'd be stuck using whatever crazy shit I was writing.;)
I was going to offer movie, cd, video game, and book rentals on the system. Something like Netflix or Greencine but using my own money system.. which they could get back eventually depending on how they spent it. Return the movie or whatever and you'd get the money back in your account.
I'm a geek. Good with making things but bad with finding the right people and pitching stuff to them in a way that is successful. To bad venture capital guys don't browse geek forums looking for folks to throw money at.;)
I've actually considered offering access to some of my software on that kind of basis. You give me the required amount when you start using it and get your money back when you stop using it but I get to collect interest on the money while it's in my hands. The software tracks digital money across different websites I made. You can buy/sell stuff in my EBay type site, buy stuff from me, play games, etc paying with digital money but can cash out if you want (but again with me keeping the interest). The main benefit would actually be that there would be far fewer fees involved (as PayPal, credit card processing, etc are somewhat expensive) and rather than charging fees to support the site I'd be able to just use the interest on the money I'm holding. Maybe a fee if you cashed out sooner than 60 days after buying the digital money.. to stop wanks from doing it 20 times a day.
To bad just about everyone I get asked for zip files by uses WinZip and nobody wants to change. Is enough to make a guy charge for Windows support. Sure I can change that tarball into a Zip file for you.. that'll be $10.:)
For that matter just use tarballs. I have tar, gzip, and bzip2 all working just fine in XP. Tarballs made with either gzip or bzip2 will be smaller than zip files most of the time anyway.
Besides I get really sick of having to provide multiple copies of source code just because Windows programmers can't figure out what to do with a tarball. C'mon! Programmers should know these things.
I usda work at TigerDirect and my inlaws were friends with the higher up folks there. Everything you say about them being shitheads is pretty much right. They don't really have any morals and don't really know much about computers. It's really a pretty crappy company.
When I worked there I tried to get them to sell Linux or BeOS with computers and they outright refussed (and said many nasty things), Part of it was that doing so hurt them because of their contract with Microsoft but a large part of it was just a dislike for anything different. The retards even ran their website off Microsoft's Personal Web Server and a home edition of M$ Access.
Also any shithead can easily get into their systems and steal endless amounts of customer data including credit cards because they have like no security at all and their turnover rate is horrible.
To make matters worse their policy was to always sale extended waranties (and add-on software that was useless) but to never honor those warranties. And calling tech support was damn near impossible.
It's the only place I've worked where it was routine to get death threats from angry customers.
I probably can't write cursive anymore. I have trouble even reading it. I can still write block letters of course but even that sometimes requires me to pause and think. I've been online most of my life and am dyslexic so writing has over time become harder and harder for me but I can read typeset text extremely fast (even upside down).
Does it really matter if people don't use cursive writing? I never understood why we needed two versions of the same alphabet. That's as stupid as forcing every kid to have both a PC and a Mac at home. Block letters are enough.
PNG is great for non-web uses. I've used it as the format of choice in games and other programming projects I've had. The resulting files are smaller than raw bitmaps and just as nice looking. For such uses neither GIF or JPEG can really cut it.

If she is a geek women I'm sure she's experienced more than enough cocky jerks. ;)

I usually play against cute geek girls. I don't feel the need to stun them before making my move. Sorry.

Does anyone else think that using such a sadistic device is the mark of an idiot? Making such a device for your own use is even more stupid.
