  1. "Better quality" is a cheat! on German Wikipedia Passes One Million Article Mark · · Score: 5, Insightful

Yes, the German Wikipedia has a better quality on average, but that comes to no surprise, given that every not perfect arcticle and all articles about things the admins haven't heard of (video games, minor Star Wars characters etc.) are deleted almost instantly.
And I guess that the English Wikipedia has as much, if not more, high quality articles than the German Wikipedia. The fact that the English Wikipedia allows medium quality articles to stay should not be considered a bad thing, I mean, who cares about the average quality? A medium quality article is still better than none at all (IMHO).

I'm German, but I usually check the English Wikipedia first because I got tired of the procedure "Check German Wikipedia -> Be disappointed to find that the article has been deleted -> Read the English article instead"

(Because of the "delete everything you don't find interesting" policy, some people have created "Wikibay", the encyclopedia where everything is considered relevant, as long as it's sourced etc. click here for German Wikibay)

Also, the international standard is that a day starts at 0:00 and ends at 23:59 (or 24:00 when they add a leap second); since the United States of America are allergic to international standards I assume that "December 11th, midnight PST" means "0:00-12.12.2009". ;-)

  8. Is there any competition? on Can Nintendo Really Be Planning Another DS Variant? · · Score: 5, Insightful

As long as there is no competing hand held on the horizon, Nintendo has no reason to compete with itself by creating a completely new hand held. Also keep in mind that Nintendo is one (the only?) vendor that actually makes money with their hardware, while others sell their's at a loss to make money with games. As long as people keep buying the new NDS deluxe pro 9000 GT Nintendo will keep producing them. Which makes perfect sense, so why bother?

  9. Might be contraproductive on Film Studios May Block DVD Rentals For One Month · · Score: 1

Some years ago I watched a movie at the cinema and liked it so much, that right the next day, I went to a shop and asked when the DVD will come out. In Germany, the delay seems to be some month, but when it finally came out I already lost my crazy enthusiasm for it and did not bother to buy it. So the delay really cost them one sale here.

I understand that the motivation behind this is to make me watch it at the cinema first, but I did that and then I wanted to buy the DVD, not just watch it again at the cinema. Similarly, if I'm not interested in buying it, but want to rent it and can't, I can easily picture myself having already lost interest, when it finally gets available for rent.

Am I the exception, or are there a lot of people who won't buy a product/service, when they have to wait too long for it?

(Also, there once was a movie that was simultaneously released at the cinema, DVD sale and DVD rent. I don't know if that made them any money, but it sure was customer friendly)

    Safety Notice

For safely and efficiently use the product, please strictly abide by the rules, otherwise the danger will happen

Do not put the product under the direct ray of sunlight, and use or put it in the extra high and low temperature environment.

From that I just generalized that this must apply to every e-ink display, since I assumed that they are all the same. So, your ereader did not come with any sun light warnings? Cool, which one do you use?

  13. My ereader does not need recharging. :-) on LG Presents Solar Powered E-Book · · Score: 2, Informative

I have a cheap ereader that needs to be connected to your PC over USB to put new content on it. And the surprising thing is, that this seems enough to recharge it! I now have it for over a month and the battery indicator still says that it is full. It's amazing how view energy this thing consumes, just connect it to a PC once a week and that's enough.

But I admit that solar power seems nice for ereaders that don't use cable connections, e.g. the Kindle with it's whispernet. The only problem there is that you shouldn't expose e-ink to direct sunlight, which unfortunately turns the solar powered e-reader into a stupid idea.

(If you care, I use a Hanlin v5, it's not exactly perfect, but since Amazon deletes your books and Sony sells you rootkits it's okay)

The worst thing this announcement could mean is that they'll charge for the API or exclude businesses from the search function.

  17. License Agreement Section 3.2 on Amazon Offers To Return Pulled Orwell Ebooks · · Score: 0

Digital Content will be deemed licensed to you by Amazon under this Agreement unless otherwise expressly provided by Amazon.

I'm not a lawyer, I don't live in the USA and I'm not even that good at understanding english, but to me this sounds like "If you bought it you can keep it".

Keep in mind the chain of events:
    1. Someone scans Orwell books and wants to sell them on amazon
    2. Amazon says "Sure, why not?"
    3. People buy these copies from amazon and annotate them
    4. Amazon notices that the copies aren't legal and delete them from every device, rendering the annotations useless.

If you interpret the license agreement to mean "You can keep it only if it turns out to be a legal copy" than this agreement is pretty much useless, since you don't want to check the copyright and licence on everything you want to buy from amazon.

I seriously considered buying a kindle from amazon. Sure, the technical possibility of remotely deleting my books irritated me in the beginning but I thought "Aw, amazon is such a nice company. Their customer service is excellent, they don't censor negative reviews... Surely I can trust them to never do that. And look, they explicitly said in the Terms of Service that they will never do that. So let's just quit being so paranoid and trust a company, just this time".

Then they started to delete Orwell books and for me, a world broke down. Do you know this feeling, when you figure out, that a good friend of you has been lying to you? Well, that's how this digital book burning felt to me. It completely destroyed my trust in that company. And since amazon was my most trusted company, I now no longer trust any other company with ultimate online access to my devices.

So, instead of buying a kindle I bought a simple chinese ereader without web access. Sure, it's not as pretty as a kindle, it has no wikipedia access and the poor translation of the manual starts with "For safely and efficiently use the product, please strictly abide by the rules, otherwise the danger will happen" but at least I know that nobody can take my ebooks away from me.
